38 Studios and Big Huge Games have both let go of their entire staffs, a source with knowledge of the situation tells Joystiq. Following reports that 38 Studios stopped paying staff on May 1, and just an hour before a scheduled press conference in Rhode Island addressing the recent 38 Studios financial debacle, both the Providence, RI-based 38 Studios and the Baltimore, MD-based Big Huge Games are no more.

what about the other 36?
Welp, us Rhode Islanders are back to only being known for coffee milk and Family Guy
*tears up*
The title made me think that 38 different game studios were shutting down.
That was... remarkably short lived.

When I think of Rhode Island, I think of those fancy houses.
I never played Reckoning, and to be honest it does not look that good, but this type of stuff is never nice, both because people lose their jobs, and it's generally a lose for the industry as a whole.
I've never heard of 38 Studios or Big Huge Games before, what games did they make?
what about the other 36?
woops i mean there's actually 39

Wow, that sucks ass. And they (38 Studios) only released their first game like three months ago.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Rise of Nations
Those are pretty much the two major games they made

Fuck yeah you do! Our houses are some fancy fucking shit over here!
Didn't Amalur get pretty good reception and sales though?

Big Huge Games made an RTS called Rise of Nations.
Fucking loved that game.
Didn't Amalur get pretty good reception and sales though?
I don't know about sales but it was received as an alright game
so does this mean there will never be a rise of nations 2
I don't know about sales but it was received as an alright game
Poor sales.
I blame EA seeing as they failed to market the game. Hell, I didn't even know the game existed until it was released.
Yeah didn't they go insanely into debt to make Amalur
Yeah didn't they go insanely into debt to make Amalur
You could say they tried to bite off more than they could chew with Amalur, given that it was their first game and at such a huge scale too.
Now half of Rhode Island is unemployed!
What a shame. Kingdoms of Amalur was a solid RPG. It didn't excel in anything particular but as a whole package it was damn good. I can only think of what could of been if they expanded on it in a sequel.

And nathanjbarnatt, he lives in someplace called Woonsocket, RI.
I saw it, and I don't go to game sites (aside from this). Didn't they give like ME3 armor if you played the demo?
yes and that is how i learned about it (but i only downloaded the thing and ran it once and left it)
Poor sales.

EA's traditionally has a "thing" against these kinds of games, which was most pronounced with their behavior towards Dragon Age: Origins and how incredibly shocked they were when it actually got good reception/sales.
Rise of nations was the shit when played with friends, mounting massive assaults was awesome.

Or it could have been the fact that they tried to release an RPG between Skyrim, SWTOR, and Mass Effect 3.
I bought Kingdoms of Amalur the other week and so far I'm really enjoying it. While it doesn't really do anything new, I find that it's pretty solid overall. The combat in particular is very nice and satisfying. It's a shame this happened, although I understand they were just trying to lead up to an MMO which probably wouldn't have been the best sequel anyway, but still.
I played the demo for Amalur but I couldn't get over the fact that your sword instantly sheathed and you pulled it out again at the end of each combo.

I would definitely say it's more along the lines of this.
You're obviously not going to see great promotion when EA has another several RPGs to hype up that I'm sure they had more faith in than this.
