“I find the actions of Bloodhound Gang disgusting. I also condemn the act of violence against them,” McFaul tweeted, apparently referring to a subsequent incident in Anapa airport when band members were assaulted by local activists before boarding their flight.
In a poor quality video posted on YouTube entitled “the Americans got beaten up in Anapa,” purporting to show the incident, men dressed in Cossack uniforms and wielding whips are seen attacking band members, apparently trying to strangle them with a US flag. The attackers are then shown stamping on a US flag.
A series of high profile Russian lawmakers spoke out against Bloodhound Gang on Saturday and Sunday, calling for a harsh punishment and suggesting that banning them from performing in Russia could serve as a “precedent” for other foreign musicians.
“Any artist, who wants to come and visit us, should understand that it is not just appropriate to respect the laws of their own country when they are at home, but Russian laws when they are in Russia,” said State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Alexei Pushkov in a statement posted Sunday on the United Russia party website.

Most people I know would get extremely offended if someone stood on the flag of their country. I just don't get it. Whenever I try speak against them they say shit like "You don't deserve to be Australia", "You're the fucking scum of the earth".
All it is is just a cloth really, plenty of flags are made daily.

To be fair, unlike disposable towels, that flag is gonna stay there for a while, so for sanitary reasons it'd probably be for the best to avoid wiping piss on it

I would argue that the flag is not nearly as symbolic as its usage is.
i.e. Can an American legitimately claim that the US flag hanging in the Post Office is more important than the one that was placed on the Moon? And, would an American be more upset if someone stole the flag in their Elementary school, or a flag sent to the Capital by a local Senator?
The flag is important, but you should also be allowed to disrespect it if you feel it's within your rights. Certainly, a national flag is symbolic - but some flag uses are more symbolic than others.

Yet in the terms of symbolism, a patriot should be proud that his own country's flag can be desecrated openly. It shows that even the most highest-order of nationality can be desecrated, and that person is free to do so.
