Sony has confirmed rumors that an even slimmer and lighter PlayStation 3 was in the works with the announcement of what we're calling the Super Slim PlayStation 3.
Debuting at the Tokyo Game Show, the latest PS3 incarnation resembles the original console (circa 2006) with its rounded plastic encasing and wide-body appearance. However, this new console is 20 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than the existing Slim model; the Super Slim PS3 sits at 11.4 inches wide by 2.36 inches tall by 9.05 inches deep.
This is also the first PlayStation 3 to abandon a disc-loading slot. Instead, the newest PS3 will operate using a disc tray. The console will also only include two front-facing USB ports. While it's always fun to wish for one, this console doesn't include an IR infrared port for remote control communication either.
To start, the Super Slim PS3 will be available only in two separate bundles. The first, going on sale September 25 for $270, will include a 250GB hard drive and pack in a copy of Uncharted 3 along with DLC for the game Dust 514. October 30 will see the release of the $300 Super Slim, which packs in a gigantic 500GB hard drive and a copy of Assassin's Creed III.

The current Slim 160GB PS3 still goes for $250 and remains the cheapest version on the market, though we'll have to wait and see if it gets a price drop as well. Neither of the new consoles will support backward compatibility, either, nor has any PS3 done so since the 80GB version released a few years back.
I'm a bit surprised that this new Super Slim PS3 didn't fall below the $250 mark, especially since an entry-level Xbox 360 can be had for $200. That said, the Super Slim PS3 is already cheaper than the Wii U, which has been priced at $300 and $350 for the Basic and Deluxe models, respectively.
There's been nothing that says the new Super Slim PS3 will perform any better than its predecessors, but we'll be the judge when CNET reviews the console soon.
aren't new consoles supposed to be coming soon?
Goddammit, why no PS4 >:/
I wish there was a comparison shot of the and the other PS3 models.
I've already got a PS3, And anyone who doesn't have one probably doesn't want one and/or is waiting for the next generation
Gotta go slim
Finally, a Sony grill with grooves.
The size of the console isn't the thing that needs shrinking, Sony.
omg it's even slimmer!!!!!
I'm totally buying it now because it's slimmer!
The next ps3 will probably fit in a manila envelope.
I'm suddenly reminded of the 32X
~its slightly thinner~
I'll probably end up getting another ps3, oh well
I never understood the shape of the PS3. The Wii is a box. The Xbox is a curved box. But the PS3 is a box...with an oval on top?
500GB hard drive isn't too shabby either.
Would come usefull for people like me who buy almost all their games digital for some reason.

Just open the lid
That disc tray looks like it's really thin, I'd be afraid to put a disc on it in case I break it.
These new models aren't meant for old users to buy them again; they allow Sony to cut production costs.

Oh, that brings back memories of the PS2 slim. Painful, painful memories.

No really???! You mean a prior generation console is less expensive than a later one?!
Oh you silly Japanese with your wacky economic practices.
Hey
Sony
Why not
Guys why not, actually make it run less shitty?
Just a thought.
omg it spins
Looks really nice but there is really no need for it. At all.
The fact that they say that the PS3 costs less than the WiiU is just sad
It's as if the author has no understanding of how everything technology works, the newer it is the more expensive it tends to be.
Looks better than the Slim model to be honest, although that might be because it's taken some cues from the 360's Slim model.
Now might be a good time to get one I guess.
Wait, wasn't this gonna be a 150$ version?

You play with the slim puss?
I think the big thing with this one for me is the tray drive, I hate the slot loading, cause I've had issues with mine in the past
I hope it gets cheaper with this model.
I need a PS3 so that I can play PS3 and console exclusives
Not a huge fan of the design, or the disk tray.
I definitely prefer my original slim over this.
i'll finally buy a ps3 if this model goes under $250.

$270 is such an odd price.
