Microsoft on Tuesday started mass emailing its 100 million+ Messenger users to let them know that the service is officially being retired on March 15, 2013. On that date, all users will be migrated to Skype, which Microsoft acquired back in May 2011 for $8.5 billion. As you can see, the email in question is titled “Important info about your Messenger account.” Here’s the main part: On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You’ll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet. Microsoft previously said the transition would happen in Q1 2013. The date was only revealed today, however, confirming the company is still right on schedule to make the big move from Messenger to Skype.
http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2013/01/09/microsoft-emails-messenger-users-to-let-them-know-the-service-is-retiring-on-march-15-and-to-upgrade-to-skype/
I haven't used messenger even once
Skype will rule all
I'm ok with this
Now that MS owns both of them it makes sense. Why have multiple products that do the same *looks at Autodesk*
Makes sense.
I've been using Messenger until 2010, then I went with the Steam+Skype combo. Works like a charm.
And that will be a very important part of internet history gone.
completely okay with this
I haven't used messenger even once
I haven't used Messenger since middle school. Facebook and Steam chat pretty much replaced it.

Provided a good service, rest in peace.

I'm not very happy with this. I still use Messenger daily. Skype's offline message system is extremely poor. I regularly receive messages late - once received one 3 weeks late.
messenger was shit. AOL all the way
I used messenger for flirting with foreign guys. :v:
Good, I just wish they would fix the fucking Windows 8 app. You can have it snapped on the left and the fucker will completely crash and drop calls at a whim. It looks nice though, shame about the adverts but those are very easily blocked.
so many MSN memories :( like having every other character linked to an emote

It's been so long since I've used MSN. RIP.
Such a shame considering that the official Skype client (which is the only one) is exceedingly shitty.
Three Messengers for the RPG-kings under the sky, Seven for the RTS-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for FPS Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of America where the corporations lie. One messenger to rule them all, One messenger to find them, One messenger to bring them all and in the Internet bind them In the Land of America where the corporations lie. Meh, a bit half-assed. Someone can probably do better.

I remember quickly shutting down the messenger window, then my PC because of it.
Can't I just use Pidgin instead?
Turing, say something instead of rating every post disagree
msn is fucking awesome man i regularly use it and almost everyone i know uses it skype is a poorly coded piece of shit with no support for custom emotcons, no badass winks, the offline messages system is a pile of dung and the UI is just so fucking badly made why does microsoft have to do this
The only reason I used messenger was to quickly check the balance on my bank account, because the bank had a extremely useful service for that. I hope that migrates to Skype too.
Msn was so 2007
I stopped using messenger a long long time ago, now it's all Steam and IRC.
