South Korea's parliament has ratified a free-trade deal with the US, after years of wrangling over the issue.
Members of the ruling Grand National Party, which has a majority, convened to force the bill through in a 151-7 vote.
Most of the opposition abstained. One politician set off a tear-gas canister before the vote and others jeered as the bill passed.
The US Congress ratified the deal last month and it has now been made law.
It is America's largest free-trade deal since the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico in 1994.
The bill - first agreed in 2007 - was ratified in a snap parliamentary session.
"We have decided to push the free trade deal through parliament by voting, as it is almost impossible to reach a compromise with the opposition," GNP politician Park Jun-sun told local media.
It is expected to increase US exports to the Asian economy by as much as $10bn (£6.5bn). There was almost $90bn in trade between the US and South Korea last year.
But South Korean farmers and some workers oppose the deal, saying it threatens their livelihoods and favours US workers.
Protests took place outside parliament as the deal was passed.
The presidential office welcomed the deal and promised to address workers' grievances.
"The government will actively pursue measures for farmers and smaller business owners... in policies and continue to put together measures to strengthen their competitiveness," said presidential press secretary Choe Guem-nak.
The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says passing it was seen as a risky move because with elections due next year, many voters already say they feel alienated by the big parties' bullish tactics.
That's something I'd expect the North to do :geno:

South Korea, Philippines, and Taiwan have a history of parliamentary outbursts like this over controversial legislation. Some other wonderful videos of South Korea's parliament:

And this one is actually from another fight over an earlier Free Trade agreement.

Edit: And a bonus from Taiwan

Hah, I remember seeing some of those videos in "Disorder in the Court".
I swear, congress and parliaments are a bunch of babies.
From Sumner being nearly murdered in the 1800s to South Koreans getting in fist fights and throwing tear gas around today.
Haha you'd expect a guy that's held back my lots of people and screaming in rage to say something like "I'll fucking kill you". Instead it was "No US trade deal".
:v:
Guy who did this was a smooth motherfucker. He was just like "Oh hey WHUTTAH TEARGAS!"
My dad hates the current ruling party and the president so much that he would probably do the same thing. I once sarcastically asked him whether they were worse than the Nazi regime and he tried to make a case for it.

I wish american politicians fought like that. Speaker of the House is the best fighter
this is quality entertainment
I like how there are people who looks like they are enjoying pushing people of the desks. What a mess.
Well, something we westerners tend to forget is that this shit really actually matters for alot of people, to the extent that they'd resort to physical violence in order to try and prevent policy from being approved.
Maybe it's not professional, but I'd support a representative who would risk his job and his physical skin to fight for what he believes is right.

I wish Congress was this entertaining, at least it'll take our minds off their terrible incompetence for a second.

God knows the first Democrat to sock a Republican in the face would get a hell of a cheer from FP.

Well, that did happen. But long ago in the years before the Civil War in the well-chronicled event of Senator Sumner of Massachusetts (Republican) getting beaten to near death with a cane by a Representative from South Carolina, Preston Brooks (Democrat).

Ironically enough the Republican in this scenario was promoting outlawing of slavery in the western territories. :v:

IIRC One southern landowner sent Preston a brand new cane with the words "Hit him again" engraved into it.

Back then Republicans were what we consider today as being Red Republicans- they were more progressive, and less conservative. It wasn't until the 30s and 40s that the two began to switch sides, and it wasn't finalized until the 60s when the Democrats were more or less forced to start appealing to progressive and liberal groups.
Hell this shit would actually make government funded television actually worth viewing :v:

We need a wiffle-canes-only policy.
