Two songwriters, Devin Copeland and Mareio Overton, say Justin Bieber and Usher took their concept and song and made millions. Now the two artists are speaking on for the first time about the song they say cheated them out of a chance to join the musical big leagues. The song is titled, “Somebody To Love.” Justin Bieber recorded a version, as did megastar and Bieber mentor, Usher. In a filing at Norfolk Federal Court, Bieber, Usher and at least 20 other defendants are named in a copyright infringement lawsuit. “For me to put my blood, sweat and tears into my work and I feel like no one else should get credit for it,” says Copeland. I sure hope the good guys win.
You know, maybe it's just because they only included a 5ish second sample of the supposed "original" song, but I really don't hear the similarity. The word "love" is sustained and the lyrics are similar, but beyond that... It'd be really nice to hear the full song to make a proper judgement.
I sure hope the good guys win.
HA! Yeah right. Do you know just how much money Usher has?
Community Service: Skip ahead to 2:18 in the video. Also, the songs aren't all that similar. Similar court cases with a lot more similar songs have been tried and failed before (Timbaland plaigarism controversy)
I sure hope the good guys win.
Yeah, man those two are cocks for trying to ride on Biebier's glory and get some money off him. [sp]But seriously, I wish Copeland and Overton won.[/sp]

Based off the snippet in the video, they could all have been ripping off Queen for all I could tell.
Apparently this is the full "original" song. This is the Justin Bieber/Usher song. I'm really not hearing it.
Aww, after seeing somebody to love I was expecting to see some love about Queen.
Aww, after seeing somebody to love I was expecting to see some love about Queen.
This springs to mind personally
I hope they win because it would be funny. But really they don't sound that much alike. It sounds like it's just the sentence "Somebody to love". In which case Queen should sue both of them.
Not really seeing the similarities to be honest. I guess the lyrics are somewhat similar, but other than that there really isn't anything too similar.

Tempest is an amazing chip/demoscene musician who got pushed around and didn't stand a chance. It's a shame they can get away with it.
Their lawyer reminds me of Saul Goodman
not gonna lie, I prefer bieber's/usher's version over theirs. hell, the two songs sound nothing alike [editline]17th May 2013[/editline] plus i like poreotix
Their lawyer reminds me of Saul Goodman
it's saul'good man :suicide:
I sure hope the good guys win.
Unlikely, seeing how bieber and usher has quite a hefty paycheck, so they can afford the best assholes in the attorney business.
To me the Bieber/Usher version just sounds like a sped up version of Copeland's song. If it's proven that Copland made it first and it did get to Usher, then the case might be viable.
“We ended up spending over a year working with a music expert and a mathematician and a statistical analyst to do a comparison of the songs themselves,” Byers says.
If you have to do that you're just fishing.
Pointless lawsuit. "We hired a mathematician to statistically analyse beat for beat" nobody cares, both songs are awful.

"We hired a mathematician to statistically analyse beat for beat" nobody cares, both songs are awful.
It does not matter what your opinion of the songs is. It's protecting the copyright and intellectual property of recording artists. If someone stole your artwork or songs and claimed it as your own, you would be pissed off too.

The beat has probably been used a trillion times and "Somebody to Love" has been sung even more times. There is no case at all, this only got into the news after they managed to somehow managed to hire some "expert" to make a case. It's another case of "they used the same influences as we did, let's sue them".
The only artist lawsuit I've seen that held any weight was the Joe Satriani's "If I Could Fly" vs. Coldplay's "Viva La Vida."

Ha Usher.
Don't worry, it's a pretty crappy town, even for the US.
But McArthur Mall and Waterside. Just don't go there after dark and you'll be fine.
