So, every year on Christmas eve around 4-5pm, I go with my family and spend Christmas with the rest of my family.
This year, being the clueless bastard I was, I just volunteered to work until 7pm on Friday. I didn't even know what day it was until three hours after I volunteered. I only did because someone else wanted to get off earlier that day, but now I'm stuck until 7pm at my job.
Does Facepunch have any possible solutions for how I can get out of this? I'm the only one working from 4-7 where I'm at, so I can't just leave or anything. I switched my shift with this old lady who is slightly annoying but worked 3:30-7, because she wanted to be out by around 6. I was originally scheduled 10-4. I probably restated things, but I'm not sure what I can do.
Also, I work Christmas day so I can't just get together with my family then. This is a serious problem, as every year of my life I've spent Christmas with my family. If you guys have any ideas, please throw them at me. I'm more distressed about this than I should be, but that's about all there is to it.
Thanks in advance.
Good luck.
Go to work, but plan something with your family in the evening. Just make sure you spend as much time with them as you possibly can.
I forgot the biggest problem, here.
We normally eat dinner at my family's get-together (which is an hour andahalf away from my house/where I work) at around 7.

So there would be no possible way I could get there in time, considering my lack of a car and the lack of anyone who could really give me a ride without me getting there before 9, which is when it would wind down and everyone would start leaving.
And before anyone brings up that I'm just being selfish wanting the presents, I'm not. I'm just afraid I'm going to really hurt my family by doing this.
Just have your family push back their plans. The tradition is in you all being there, not the time of day you're there.
There are little kids who go to sleep early, we can't push it back to the point of eating dinner at midnight or anything.
I guess it depends on how late the kids can stay up, but tell them you can be there at 9 (7:00+ hour and a half with a little wiggle room). That, or ask if you can close up maybe an hour early since it's Christmas eve.
Just don't turn up to your work. Unless it's a one man job. When they come to you to complain, just say it was an emergency.

I would normally just do this, but I volunteered to close, and it's a one-man job of closing up for three hours. If I don't come in, I'd probably get fired.

Thinking about this.

But we're already closing up four hours early.
Tell your boss you'll work on an upcoming holiday to make up for leaving an hour early. Just make sure that holiday isn't one you have shit to do on
Well, thanks Facepunch, but I guess this is an issue I must deal with myself.
I've already volunteered to work pretty much every holiday in existence.
Make up a holiday then! I'm sure things will work out.
In future, think before you act/speak.
Sneak out from work and haul ass home.

Have the dinner at your workplace.

This is what this entire thread should be full of.
Your family is really nit-picky if they actually get HURT over you working.
Just pick another day to be with them, it's just a Friday.
Explain to your boss what you have done (beef it up with some lies - say some relatives are coming over from abroad and you'll miss them if you don't get to the dinner) and offer to work an extra shift at a later date.

agreed, but just be careful not to go overboard and start a chain of lies.
