BERLIN - The corpse of a 66-year-old German woman who died more than six months ago was found in her apartment, in front of a television set that was still on, the Frankfurter Neue Presse newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The woman, in the town of Oberursel near Frankfurt, died of natural causes in a nightgown while watching TV. There was a program guide from September nearby, the newspaper said, describing the body as "partially mummified".
Police said residents in the 30-apartment block had noticed an unpleasant smell in the staircase but no one had informed the authorities. The landlord opened the apartment after noticing her mailbox jammed with uncollected letters.
I still remember the thread about the woman who was paying off her house till it went into foreclosure and they found her dead body.
This is one depressing as hell way to die and be found...

not really, its quite peaceful actually and not painful considering how she was sitting in front of the tv, if you ever visit the intensive care section of a hospital, you'll probably see lots of old folk who are suffering an awfully slow death for months or even years, due to cancer/etc.
What channel was she watching?
Wow, six months? You would think someone would find her sooner.
how does it take six months for something like this to be noticed?
Walking into a room and seeing someone's decaying corpse just sitting there is one of my fears
Seriously that has to be absolutely terrifying, imagine calling the person's name trying to summon them, you hear the television on but everything else is utterly silent, and you turn the corner and just encounter a horribly decaying corpse sitting in a chair.
This is the kind of shit you see in horror movies.

I was more referring to the fact that she has no close relatives or loved ones who cared to check on her in 6 months.. that's sad in itself

Almost but not quite. The chair has to be facing opposite of you and you only notice the corpse after slowly creeping up to the chair and turning it around.
I once had a dream like this. It just flashed to a very small apartment in some quiet city with one window and a gray backdrop barely visible through it. In the room was a skeleton at a decaying TV. Cobwebs then grew until they overtook all the room.
Oddly I was more intrigued than shocked by the dream. If i ever encounter this in real life I'd probably feel really bad though.
I don't get it, why is it so note-worthy that her TV was still on?

I just found it creepy that her dead body was watching a TV and it didn't turn off at all in that 6 month time-period. Usually a power-outage or something would have caused it to turn off atleast once in that time; but it stayed on for 6 months with her continually decaying body. I find that shit creepy

Maybe she had a UPS on the tv? We have one on ours.

MTV probably
rather die like that than go to a nursing home or hospice

It's noteworthy and creepy because that means it was on when she died, and had been on for six months straight. Usually, when someone dies any electronics will likely be shut off within short order, either due to a lack of paid bills or an eventual TV/power problem that'll turn it off.
By all means, it should have eventually gone off within six months, since televisions don't normally stay on for that long in one session of use and the power should have fluctuated either due to wear/city power issues or an intentional cutting of the power by the electrical company/building manager/etc.
Basically, this means the TV was essentially running non-stop for six months, without a power outage, unpaid electrical bill or worn down wiring causing it to turn off. Either that's one amazingly durable TV in a very odd coincidence, or being trapped in an apartment for six months with your own corpse is so boring that even her ghost wanted to watch television.

Got ninja'd a bit, but my reply is a bit more detailed, so..

The TV manufacturer can at least advertise that their TVs don't shut down for nothing.

Your answer beat my answers ass back and forth
Similar thing happened over here eight years ago, woman dead in her flat with the TV on for three years.

So that explains the zombie television programming, the big networks are appealing to the ultra-loyal 'recently deceased' age group.

Are power outages really that common? Honestly don't think I've had one in the last three years. She could have had the electricity bill charged to her debit account which had enough to pay it off all good, in which case it just relies on people not seeing you / postman being able to fit letters through the door.

Dont worry, you'd smell them first.

She was streaming midget porn.
She probably watched RTL, I always die a little inside when I see that stupid pile of IQ lowering bullshit in the TV at my parents or my grannies.

I don't blame them, sounds kinda silly. "Hello police? The staircase at my apartment smells weird." Not exactly how I was taught to use the emergency number :v:
