An 11-year-old Washington state boy who authorities say brought a gun and 400 rounds of ammunition to school told police he did it to defend a friend who was being bullied, according to court documents filed on Thursday.
The boy appeared in court at 9 a.m. local time and was appointed public counsel, said Clark County Juvenile Court Administrator Pat Escamilla. His mother and father were present, according to minutes from the appearance.
The boy brought several knives to his Vancouver, Wash., school on Wednesday along with the gun and ammunition, police said. Frontier Middle School, in Vancouver, Wash., was locked down for about two hours after ammunition was found at around 9:20 a.m. local time (12:20 p.m. ET).
NBC News has withheld the boy’s name because of his age. He is next due Clark County Juvenile Court at 9 a.m. local time on Friday.
In a declaration of probable cause filed in juvenile court on Thursday, police said that the boy’s mother called on Wednesday morning to report fears that her son had taken kitchen knives to school. The boy was held at school by the principal and assistant principal, and a pat-down revealed that he was carrying an unloaded .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun in his pants pocket, police allege in the document.
The boy was also found to be carrying two loaded .22 caliber magazines, according to the probable cause document. Officers said that the boy had “claimed in the presence of school officials that a ‘voice in his head’ was telling him to kill” another student after he had called the boy’s friend “gay,” the document states.
In an interview with police, the boy “stated a voice told him killing [another student] was a good idea; however he planned to just shoot [the student] in the arm and then shoot himself in the head,” according to the probable cause document. “After making theses (sic) admissions he asked to speak to his mother and his request was granted.”
That's pretty fucked up for such a age. I hope he gets help.
Good thing they got him before anything could happen, disaster averted.
How the fuck does an 11 year old get his hands on a gun anyway.
I mean it's as easy as, put the gun into a locked box, lock the box, keep the key on you.

That is so sweet
But slightly disturbing
What really worries me isn't just that he got access to the gun, but that the child thought that the gun was the solution to the problem over everything else. Does make you wonder what this child's interaction with adults must be like for him to disregard them entirely for situations like this.

I hope this kid can get the treatment and care that he deserves for his illness. No one would ever wish to do that kind of shit like that without some wild birth defect / serious issues at home. No one deserves that kind of illness.
Thank god it was stopped before it became national news. That would have been a god damn nightmare.

christ this kiddo is seriously messed up, he needs some help asap.
400 rounds. Good god.
ocd 400 rounds
400 rounds. Good god.
400 rounds of .22 isn't a lot.
You can get a box of 500 for like 20-30 dollars.
Why 400 rounds? Did he expect to miss 398 times?
That is a lot of ammo, like wow.
It takes good people with guns to stop bad people with guns. NO REGULATION!
stop
That 'defend a friend from bullies' explanation seems really suspect considering how much ammo he brought with him.

He probably just brought a box.
He probably just brought a box.
Looking at it, yeah, there are 400 round bricks so he might have just brought one of those.
At least he got arrested for having an actual gun and not just a twig.
it really isn't. please cease from saying idiotic things.
Uh yes it is
It'd be surprising enough if the child brought in the gun with any ammo, never less 400 fucking rounds

Honestly I hope this makes people realize that it's more about mental health than anything else.
Although that probably won't happen.
I'm so glad I live in the U.S.N.R.A., where even our young 'uns are learning how to use a gun.

No, especially of .22LR, it's nothing. You buy them in packs of several hundred rounds for $20-$40, because .22 is so cheap to shoot and people tend to shoot a lot of it when they're out.

That box has 525 rounds in it, and costs $20. People also tend to buy 9mm, .40, .223, and plenty of other kinds of ammo by the thousands of rounds at a time because it saves money to buy in bulk. That's why when the media made a fit over the Aurora shooter having bought 2000 rounds of ammo online, that's not uncommon nor is it very much, plenty of people buy .223 by the thousand, and if they're training for or participating in a competitive shoot they may go through 500-1000 rounds in 1 day at the range. Last time I shot a .22 rifle, me and a friend went through 1000 rounds between us. Chances are very high this kid just picked up a brick of .22 that was around the house. If it'd been 400 rounds of 9mm that'd be much more surprising than 400 rounds of .22, since you can easily have just 1 pack of 400 rounds of .22, but that'd most likely be 4-8 boxes of 9mm.

Orrr by being raised into a culture that glorifies weapons and usage of them to solve disputes.

mental insanity
shitty gun culture
bad childhood
shit parents
horrible depression
not being taught about guns properly in school and home
there's tons of reasons why he could have done this. Yes.
The boy was prepared for a zombie outbreak.. He's gonna make it where others would fail...
Jesus this kid was fucking packing for the apocalypse.

Or we can be adults, recognize that, since the 1990's, school shootings have actually remained static (technically untrue, there has been a very minor decline) and that the number of deaths caused by them is ultimately completely insignificant and not financially worth any action whatsoever.
The fucking media has decided that anything pertaining to school violence is a hot topic and has elected to drastically increase the amount of attention such stories receive, thus distorting public perception of the problem that isn't actually a problem.
Mental health isn't the issue here.

whether it is or not, the way that mental health is "treated" seriously needs to be changed. too many doctors just throw a script of anti-depressants at anyone who has some sort of depression/anxiety (which is A LOT of people). it's even more sad when they do this shit to little kids, and the parents just keep feeding them pills unaware of the dangers, doctors making them go on and off of different SSRI cycles, throw in some ADHD meds, completely frying their brain... clearly it's not fucking working. it happens a lot more often than you'd think. this shit is wrong.
