'TV and video games do NOT cause bad behaviour' say experts

[B][B]Spending hours watching TV or playing computer games each day does not harm young children's social development, say experts.

Just like any other enjoyable endeavour, though, it CAN become a bad habit/addiction.

It sort of is in my case. >.>
bad parenting causes bad behavior, but it's also kinda dumb to say TV and games don't affect you because they do.
I've actually found video games to be a good stress reliever.
Ones of people shocked.
If anything Facepunch helped me be social.
While video games do trigger levels of aggresion in the brain, it's not that big of a deal. Anything competitive can do this, such as chess or rooting for a basketball team.

BBC really love their stock images

I'd go so far as to argue that people who play video games, especially violent or competitive ones, are slower to anger in social interactions because they've been tempered by them - And it gives them an outlet for stress.
TV and Games don't cause bad behavior, using them as a babysitter does.

Why did a forum make you social? Hey like, I used to be that kid who spent his days in the library being some lonely prick so I understand but my main reason of getting out was finding people that were more outgoing and helped me find more friends eventually setting up all sorts of friendships and memories along the way
Whatever negative effects video games may have on people, movies and TV shows probably do the same.

I use the ratings I get to determine what jokes have a better chance of working.
-snip?
Most school shootings tends to happens because the shooter was treated badly or had some mental problems.

The internet is not a good place for sarcasm, but i wouldn't be surprised if like there's one oddball here that became social because of a forum

That whole notion of 'giving them an outlet' isn't well-supported by science. If anything, the opposite is true- people come to rely on particular outlets as solutions to stress, and if that outlet isn't available they can't deal with it. People who, for example, punch pillows to relieve stress have problems when they're stuck in a meeting with angry people and there are no pillows around.
Put more simply, if it feels good, you'll come to rely on it, and the behavior is reinforced, not lessened. Playing lots of violent videogames won't make you a less hostile person, but the evidence here is that it won't make you a more hostile person either.

Yeah, they need to stop bullies.
Well, no shit.
Of course, this is just going to be ignored by everyone on the "ban dem violent vidya gaemes!!1!" side.
Videogames or what not does not cause "bad behavior" but from my own personal experience it does hinder social skills...

You don't get to playing games as a scapegoat for being awkward or antisocial. Normal people have no trouble enjoying hobbies without it compromising their personality, the key is not playing games to the exclusion of normal face-to-face interaction.

this is wrong btw its called the myth of catharsis

and theres proof violent videogames up anger in the short term but not in the long term

yeah so? if the outcome was the opposite it would be ignored by everyone on the "don't ban violent video games" side

Hm, good point. This is archangel125, by the way, I'm just on this account because I'm at college and I don't trust their network security.
That said, the alternative for some people (perhaps determined by their disposition) is to keep frustration bottled up for a long time without letting it dissipate, and eventually they explode. Maybe some people need outlets.
When I was little I'd be insanely violent. I remember punching a kid in my class just because she was close and I was angry. I remember waving a pair of scissors around at my teacher in frustration because I messed up a calculation in maths class.
I was around 7 to 10 back then.
In recent days though, like between the ages 13 to now, ever since I started playing video games and getting animation as a hobby, my behavior in the past makes people surprised. You'll have a hard time finding someone as mellow as me. Generally I keep a cool head, I stay silent and I rarely talk back. When I do, though, I tend to have a bit of an attitude, but it's rare to get me that angry.
So where the Fox News norm tells me that I should in theory be a raging murderer lunatic, I'm as calm as I'll ever be and have no plans to change that attitude.

And adding onto some previous points people have given that it becomes "addicting" to relieve stress; I don't play as much games as I used to nowadays. When I started playing them I'd buy stuff like GTA:IV, Red Dead Redemption and Left 4 Dead 2 on release. With time I stopped though, because I became gradually uninterested. I still play games but nowhere near as much as I did back then. They're not a "stress relief" anymore.

Read the post above. The hydraulic model for anger doesn't exist.
Yay.

And hokey.
90% fights, 10% actual playing.

Pissed off from work > Boot up Space Marine and chop up Orks > Not angry any more.
It's always made me angry when people claim video games make kids turn into murderers when they have barely any proof to back it up with.
