I'm going to kill dogmeat. Don't force me to have a companion.

No one is forcing you to.

Companions can't be killed, on the basis that nobody who uses companions will actually keep playing rather than reload a save if their follower dies.
He is also completely optional, like all the other companions in the game.

I'd prefer them to actually die, because if they die, then that means I've walked into a scenario in which they could die. Reloading the save means I have to do that scenario over again, and try a different method to prevent them from dying, rather than them just not dying at all.
It's like making the player invinsible, since every time you die it just reloads the save in the first place.
Oh god that German Shepherd is gorgeous!
But can he wear dog armor?
Or a Dog Sneaking suit

That's just babysitting busywork

Oh geez, look at this moodkiller here!
Here's to you stumbling over Pariah Dog in your next Fallout 2 playthrough

that being said, only having them be knocked out for the rest of the fight is a pretty good compromise. You run the risk of losing the companion's assistance in a fight, but you dont need to worry about your dog 1v1ing a behemoth or something like that
I'm going to kill dogmeat. Don't force me to have a companion.
iirc, I think Bethesda said you can't kill dogmeat. (unless if you use mods that is)
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Get Dogmeats RefID, type this into the console "setessential (ref ID)". Bam None essential NPC is now impossible to kill and an essential NPC becomes mortal. Does not even require mods at all.
I'm just tired of german shepherds in videogames, they are like the "go to game dog". I hope one of the earlier mods are a replacement.
I ll wait for a cat companion.
Hasn't it been said already that the companions in 4 are going to be similar to New Vegas?
If they are not in your party, they are killable, but once recruited they are just put in an unconscious state.

this is because german shepherds are superior beings
im more of a corgi guy but i get why it's the go-to dog. the perfect blend of killing monster and loyal companion, while still being stylish as fuck

I don't know if it matters, but I think that shepherds might be easier to wrangle than other breeds of dogs, which might be important when motion capturing them.

Nope, they are just plain unkillable.

Don't worry man. It was just a NPC in fallout 3 that got famous and now they are using it for marketing purposes. You will not be forced to have him as a companion and even if let's say that the dog was not optional there would be a mod that would erase him from the game.

dogmeat was in fallout 1 and 2 as well

Exactly. He\she is a staple of the series.

Or they have done something stupid because AI is still pretty limited. The number of times I'd had companions die in a straight up fight pales in comparison to the number of times I've had them die because they did something stupid and entirely avoidable.

Source which states that companions cannot be killed outside of your party?
I'm going to kill dogmeat. Don't force me to have a companion.
Why are all of your posts terrible and horrendous?
On topic, I really like how smooth the gun's animations are in F4 compared to F3 and NV

Nothing like sneaking past a deathtrap in Skyrim or FNV only for Arcade/Lydia/whoever to come barreling through it, triggering the trap and killing both of us.
I play FNV in hardcore mode but I typically make the companions Essential because they're so fucking stupid.

Nothing more fun than wandering into 2-3 cazadors (hell even 1 is enough) and having your fucking companion die because they can't do anything about the poison.
they won't force you to use Dogmeat any more than you were forced to use Lydia (i.e., not at all)
Can't Lydia die though? IDK because both times I had Lydia follow she seemed to have vanished after some huge bandit/Forsworn encounter that I can barely escape from.
I'm going to kill dogmeat. Don't force me to have a companion.
I'm pretty sure you can tell him to stay home.

Companions in Skyrim were usually left alone after they were stunned, but some enemies might accidentally kill them while aiming for you, or vice versa.
I hope there is a hardcore mode where companions can die, those moments in New Vegas where my companions died because we got ambushed and overwhelmed by a Legion raiding party or I confronted an enemy too powerful resulting in me losing my companion and not save scumming are what my hardcore playthroughs even better. Shit happens in the wasteland.
