While i love our armed forces, the lack of Aircraft carriers in active service is a colossal oversight which puts us in a really shit position to defend the island. Retaking it would be virtually impossible without help.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm reasonably surebif our islands where under attack then our allies would offer their support enough that we would have all the ships and aircraft we would ever need.

I really think getting rid of the harrier was a piss poor idea, especially when the plan was to replace it with the F-35 which costs a despicable amount of cash.
I'm not saying it's a bad deal by the way, as far as things go it's pretty solid but that doesn't change the fact it's still better to have our own carriers and craft on them.

In an ideal world that would be the case, but in the Falklands V1 we was all but hung out to dry by our Allies, the US included. So there is precedent.
Obviously times and governments change so I'm not saying we wouldn't get help, and as already stated we do have the right to 'borrow' Carriers, but it's really not the same as controlling your own fleet.

I always find it a bit weird that only the US navy builds proper aircraft carriers, everyone else has those STOL configurations and they run on gas turbines

Well the Nimitz class carriers will be replaced as the ford class takes over their roles so we will have some spares lying around but whoever rents them has to pay for the fuel...and by that I mean the uranium

The United States wouldn't be the worlds sole superpower without a huge military.

If the Argies don't do anything for the next few years, the odds of an Argentinian invasion are going to plummet like a rock anyway
Once the HMS Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier and F-35 shipment to go with it are in service (I believe both should be done by at least 2020?) we'll have the capability to rip the Argentinian airforce a new asshole

We have 1 left, but that's only because it hasn't been scrapped yet, it's been decommissioned and not in active service, there's currently no aircraft in service that can operate from it even if we did rush it back into service (we entirely depends on weither or not it's been gutted of it's computers / engines ect). So technically we do still have a carrier, but in reality we don't.
We do have 1 amphibious assault ship in service that looks similar but it's a helicopter carrier.
