Reporting from Washington— Acting with minutes to spare, President Obama approved a four-year extension of expiring provisions of the Patriot Act, after Congress overcame mounting opposition from both parties to narrowly avoid a lapse in the terrorist surveillance law.
Obama, attending an international summit in France, awoke early Friday to review and approve the bill, directing that it be signed in Washington by automatic pen before the provisions expired at midnight Thursday Eastern time.
Welp, there's goes another of my votes going to waste, only if there was any other competent candidates. Before anyone asks, the president didn't veto this, he didn't delay it, he signed it right before it was going to expire, meaning this is official.
official.
Honestly if you go to vote every four years thinking voting for one man who's mainly a figure head is going to make a difference, it's not. Yes there's sway, yes they have power, but it's power that's rarely used in favor of appeasing the people who've been in power and make the most money by being in power.
So I'm not at all surprised shit like this happened.
If he didn't, it would have been another Republican berserk button pressed. Fox News would have brought on "annalists" to bash him on his terror policy and it would be thrown in his face for months to come by the retarded Republican House. At the same time, we still haven't worked out a compromise to raise the debt ceiling, and we can't have this in the way.
Despite the sense behind it, it's a horrid bill and I hope it gets killed as soon as the budget is safe again.
Ah the sickly smell of unrecognized fascism
What else could he have done?
There's a ton of crisis right now and the last thing the government needs is people bickering over this and causing delays in congress for several days because of it.
I don't see why people on here care so much. It's something that would never affect your life in the slightest.

Well I mean yeah, it's not a good thing but it's one of those things that will probably never affect you so it's not really worth all the bitchfitting

The Patriot Act is only really used on people that
1. Go outside
2. Do things that get them suspected of being a fucking terrorist
Both of those things FP'ers don't do
[editline]26th May 2011[/editline]
No but seriously the 2nd one.

Ho you mean like having a middle eastern last name??
Jokes aside, the PATRIOT act is plain wrong. Regardless of whether it's affecting you or some poor brown kid who may or may not be a terrorist and is now being tortured in a detention center, if you can't see how wrong it is in so many ways, I truly feel sorry for you.
From another article.
"When the clock strikes midnight tomorrow, we would be giving terrorists the opportunity to plot attacks against our country, undetected," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on the Senate floor Wednesday
They can also do it undetected in Canada, and Nigeria, and Mexico and every other fucking nation that isn't the United States.
Honestly the Patriot Act is the biggest violation of constitutional rights I've seen in my lifetime. If they want to spy on people they let in with a visa or whatever, go right ahead, they don't have that constitutional right until they become a citizen. They're casting a net over the american people in the hopes of MAYBE getting something tangible.
What has this whole post 9/11 security stockpile prevented? From what I've seen, nothing. The only reason nothings happened is because the terrorists were incompetent, or we just got lucky and their shit didn't work. (See; Underwear bomber, Times Square Bomber, Shoe Bomber).
As Benjamin Franklin once said.
Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither
I'll get off my soapbox now.
Either he was being silly, or he had a gun aimed at him whilst signing this piece of TOILET PAPER. It may seem soft as cotton to Republicans, but for us humans it's only useful for wiping our arses. I wouldn't even use it to wipe, though. Probably made of asbestos.

You're exaggerating just a wee tad
They don't exactly take any foreign guy they find and then torture them over being brown

Uh-oh, better cancel that order of 20 50-gallon drums of fertilizer to my apartment.

Unlike the Japanese internment camps during WW2 which caused us to irreversibly tumble down the slippery slope to fascism. Good thing we were able to rebel and overthrow emperor Carter.

I sincerely hope you're joking.
Love me some two party system.
I'm not surprised. Did people really think that having a Democrat in the Oval Office would change everything?
Also, this is exactly what I was saying when people had Obama fever back in 08.
Oh, so basically it lets the Police be all dystopian and shit?
Not really.
eh
you win some, you lose some
With all these problems that are happening in the U.S. and my hopeless inability to lead a better cause when a far greater majority would be able to stop my ideas or change it by general popularity. Even if I'm against anything problematic in the U.S., and unable to stop what might still exist until my death. I will keep in mind that there's still good people here and I will try to support anyone good.
I'm not surprised at all.

No, people on here are just acting ridiculous talking about how America is turning in to a shithole because of something that will affect practically no one and really doesn't change our quality of life in any way.
Typical Facepunch acting like women overreacting and exaggerating about everything.

I'm not agreeing with it I'm just saying it's just a little ridiculous how riled up FPers are over this even though it will affect none of them and half of those probably don't even know what it does.
