It's true.
Modern DSLRs have really good autofocus, he was probably smart enough to notice that the big shiny button made it do things and watched humans point the lens end at things.

Or maybe the camera was set on a timer and just took a picture every second or something, that's what wild animal photographers usually do when getting the camera really close.
