Microsoft to remove the start button for windows 8

[release] Say goodbye to the Windows start button. Microsoft has gotten rid of it from the latest build of Windows 8.
Hitting the Web over the weekend, screenshots of the new Windows 8 build display the "super bar," but without the start button orb on the left, according to The Verge. Build 8220 will be the final version released before the beta, now known as the Consumer Preview, debuts before the end of the month.
Until its untimely (or timely) death, the Windows 8 start button located in the Metro UI offered access to the search, share, devices, and settings panels. The Windows start button in the desktop simply returned you to the Metro UI.
To replace the start button, Microsoft will reportedly turn that space into a hot corner, sources told The Verge. Hovering your mouse or swiping your finger over that spot will bounce you back and forth between the Metro UI and the desktop in an attempt to offer a more consistent experience between the two environments.
Fans of the traditional start button may not be happy. But The Verge believes the move is final given that Microsoft has been chewing on this decision for awhile. On the plus side, the super bar will retain its Windows 7 functionality as home to pinned shortcuts for launching your favorite desktop applications.
Windows 8 will also sport an enhanced "charms bar," a group of transparent icons that provide access to key features, added The Verge.
The charms bar can actually fill in as a replacement for the defunct Metro UI start button by offering links to the search, share, devices, and settings panels.
A number of Microsoft users have expressed concern over Windows 8's reliance on the Metro UI and touch-based input. PC users in particular have complained that the new UI doesn't lend itself as easily to navigating via conventional mouse and keyboard, at least as seen in the current Developer Preview.
Acknowledging the concerns and tweaking some aspects of Windows 8 in response, Microsoft has promised that the new Consumer Preview will be more user friendly for traditional desktop users.[/release]

Windows 8 -- Butchering what was good

God fucking damn it
Tablets are not fucking everything, desktop PCs are still the best. Why can't anyone realize this? Stupid gimmick shit.
I think it will work out okay, have some faith. Microsoft wouldn't make a drastic enough change to ruin the Windows experience. At least try the preview before you take sides based on some random news article.
this is my face with no start bar
:(
Who's idea was this?
"Yeah, so we're going to add in some new features, make things a bit more user friendly, but that start button? That's gotta go."
How else are they going to force you into buying windows 8?
With only support for touchscreens etc.
how the fuck am i going to keep my desktop icon-free, i can't fit everything on the super bar
i don't want a fucking hot corner
Where Do You Want To Go Today?

It says mouse so I really don't see the issue. Oh no, now I have to move my mouse to the exact spot I used to have to move it to and hover it!
I hate Windows for programming details, but I don't know where I stand on this. I do find it kind of annoying due to reflexes.
Fuck you windows, that was my favourite button.
I really don't get the issue... It's one button that's being replaced with a similar function.
Reminds me the burchered xbox menu that was made so kinect users dont have to use a controller. Shit is annoying to find ANYTHING.
Or you could, you know, click on it which is a lot faster than hovering your mouse over a specific spot and waiting for it to open.
Okay, so I'm going to guess that this is going to have click support.
But you know, you could all just rage either way.
Worst case scenario I'll stick with Windows 7.
Looks like the pattern will hold up. It seems like after they make a good OS, they always make a shitty one (ME, Vista, 8), and then Bill Gates gets pissed and tells them to make another one that doesn't suck cocks or he's going to suffocate them with his money.

Windows 7 is now the new XP. It lived a good life, and so will 7.
Stuff like this is another reason why open operating systems need more professional support.
I like windows how it is now. Just make it smaller and lighter weight, and get rid of media player, and internet explorer, and the other shitty bloatware you put on it.
Damn MS breaking what was fixed
Windows 9 is going to be amazing.
It will have all the best parts of 8 and won't suck, so yeah.
That's what 7 is. All the best parts of Vista with the simplicity of XP

I find it's actually really easy to do.
I'm a Linux user and I've never really used my desktop. Sidebars and the like meet all my needs.
Windows is in it's final death throes.
If we're lucky this is just a press misunderstanding and it's optional
This just seems dumb
Its not really gone. You just have to hover over the corner of the screen.
It looks like this right now

That looks like shit tbh
So they are going to remove one of the most iconic functions of Windows so they can use this "super bar"?
That start button is obviously a bug.
I'm only semi-joking. It looks like a bug in the programming.
Why can't we just mix some of the XP interface with some of the 7 interface and call it good

In what way was the XP interface better than that of 7?...
7 was a god damned good OS. If I ever have to use XP it's shit.
Title is misleading, they're not removing the Start button, they're just not calling it a Start button for some reason and forcing you to hover over it instead of clicking it.
Seems kind of pointless, though. Were people really complaining about the aesthetics of the Start button and the fact that you had to click it? The word "START" isn't even on the button anymore, you can argue that they've already gotten rid of it. Who the hell would be annoyed by the presence of a clickable icon on the left side of a bar full of more clickable icons?
Looks like I'll be sticking with 7. I personally think it's the best OS I've ever used.
