The device features two dock connection ports, something that was rumored for the iPad 2. Unfortunately, the novelty of the two ports will be somewhat dampened by the fact that this iPad only runs a testing platform called Switchboard instead of iOS. As the seller describes it: This is one of a VERY small amount of Apple prototype devices and you rarely see these on ebay. This iPad has 16GBs of capacity, and is incredibly unique ... Apple prototyped these iPads to have this connector late in the process and at the last minute decided to remove them. There are patent drawings and leaked casings that show the indents for both dock connector holes, but this unit has both dock connectors, and both are full functional for charging this iPad and connecting it to your computer. There were certainly rumors to the effect that a new iPad would have two ports, and as the seller notes there were actually leaked cases and drawings that showed this design. This particular iPad, however, is the first actual device to show up with the ports intact. Whether Apple indeed intended to include both ports up until "the last minute" is anyone's guess, though it seems unlikely that Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive, both decisive and minimalistic in their design tendencies, would allow such an ambiguity into a shipping product. It is, however, possible and even likely that the decision of which side the dock would be on was left until the last minute, as the device is equally usable in both landscape and portrait modes. They settled on portrait as the primary orientation, clearly, mirroring the iPhone and differentiating the iPad from widescreen monitors and TVs. Interestingly, as a commenter points out at MacRumours, which found the listing, the circuitry necessary for the second dock connector is still present in normal iPads, though there is no hole in the case through which it can be accessed. The real question, of course, is how did this device get out of Apple's labs in the first place? The seller tells Wired: "Judging by how Apple works, it’s most likely stolen, but I’m not sure about that... I can’t give much information about the Apple device without revealing who specifically I am." That may put this auction in questionable legal territory. Regardless, the package is already in the open, in transit to the US-based buyer. Apple may try to track it down, but this cat is already out of the bag.
I knew Apple didn't care about their older pre-2000 prototypes but don't they clamp down like mad on all their more recent prototypes and make sure they didn't surface on the market? I pity the AppleFag that bought that. Apple will just get an injunction to get it back and he'll never see his money or investment again.
So take a tablet PC, add a capacitative touch screen, remove all useful physical features and ta da, iPad?
Is this the prototype for the first gen, second or Retina?

We already know what the new iPhone is going to look like, and there hasn't been much of a fuss at all. This is probably related to Apple's opening doors from Cook. I bet a developer bought that and wants to play around with switchboard on a tablet. Still a ridiculous price though. [editline]29th May 2012[/editline]
Is this the prototype for the first gen, second or Retina?
Looks like a first, if only because there would be less experimenting with the newer one.
I bet they took it out last minute just so they could wait and add it as an extra feature as one more thing to differentiate the next ipad. Like how they easily could have added a camera to the 1st iPad but left it out to add to the second to make it actually "worth" buying a year later. And is it just me, or is having a second docking port fucking useless and retarded anyway, how is that of any use??
What the fuck is up with the blurred out spots?
What the fuck is up with the blurred out spots?
That's actually part of the original design. They changed it because it was to cool for the common folk to poses.
What the fuck is up with the blurred out spots?
iPad's nipples
fun fact: the apple TV has solder points on its motherboard for an iphone/ipad 30 pin connector.
What the fuck is up with the blurred out spots?
probably some sort of serial code I'm assuming

The idea that Apple is loosening up on their prototype inventory is insanity.
Don't get the hype. It's being hailed almost like it was lost and uncovered ancient space technology yeesh
I pity the AppleFag
pity the applefag? dude, you're not in a position to pity anyone.
Don't get the hype. It's being hailed almost like it was lost and uncovered ancient space technology yeesh
Hardware and software prototypes aren't fascinating to you?

You mean this? http://www.gsmarena.com/possible_photos_of_the_next_iphone_reveal_larger_screen_metal_back-news-4315.php
Judging by the design screenshots, if this is legitmite it seems like apple didn't jump straight onto an iPhone like GUI. Even though it does follow a similar app layout on the homescreen, it contains a bigger status bar and larger icons. It follows a more crude design instead of the glossy design we know today apart from the phone. Yes I know it was a W.I.P but I'm interested in this, then again I'm interested in everything when it comes to early software development
Don't get the hype. It's being hailed almost like it was lost and uncovered ancient space technology yeesh
Steve almost turned Apple into a religion. These days, anything that was made by Apple is some sort of holy object crafted by their almighty god himself.

Maybe they took it out not because they were to add it in again in a later model, but because it was just a dumb thing anyways?
So it's like a current iPad but... has a second docking port. How the bloody hell is that worth 10K?
So it's like a current iPad but... has a second docking port. How the bloody hell is that worth 10K?
Prototype.
And suddenly it turns out to be a Chinese fake.
Prototype.
With that kind of money, couldn't you just get someone to build in a second port, and still have change?

So the only thing different are two dock connection ports?
So take a tablet PC, add a capacitative touch screen, remove all useful physical features and ta da, iPad?
man i think you just figured out why ipads are so pricy servicing costs :v:
