• Chechen authorities reportedly executing gay men; Over 100 arrested expected to be killed
MOSCOW — First, two television reporters vanished. Then a waiter went missing. Over the past week, men ranging in age from 16 to 50 have disappeared from the streets of Chechnya. On Saturday, a leading Russian opposition newspaper confirmed a story already circulating among human rights activists: The Chechen authorities were arresting and killing gay men. While abuses by security services in the region, where Russia fought a two-decade war against Islamic insurgents, have long been a stain on President Vladimir V. Putin’s human rights record, gay people had not previously been targeted on a wide scale. The men were detained “in connection with their nontraditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such,” the newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, reported, citing Russian federal law enforcement officials, who blamed the local authorities. By Saturday, the paper reported, and an analyst of the region with her own sources confirmed, that more than 100 gay men had been detained. The newspaper had the names of three murder victims, and suspected many others had died in extrajudicial killings. A spokesman for Chechnya’s leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, denied the report in a statement to Interfax on Saturday, calling the article “absolute lies and disinformation.” “You cannot arrest or repress people who just don’t exist in the republic,” the spokesman, Alvi Karimov, told the news agency. “If such people existed in Chechnya, law enforcement would not have to worry about them, as their own relatives would have sent them to where they could never return,” Mr. Karimov said. The sweep, like so much else in Russian politics today, was entangled in the country’s troubled politics of street activism. It began, Novaya Gazeta reported, after a Moscow-based gay rights group, GayRussia.ru, applied for permits to stage gay pride parades in four cities in Russia’s predominantly Muslim North Caucasus region, of which Chechnya is a part.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/01/world/europe/chechen-authorities-arresting-and-killing-gay-men-russian-paper-says.html https://en.crimerussia.com/gromkie-dela/sweeping-purge-against-gays-in-chechnya-people-killed/
He's using the Iran defense of there are no gays because we killed them all.
It's okay, they were probably ~globalists~.
“If such people existed in Chechnya, law enforcement would not have to worry about them, as their own relatives would have sent them to where they could never return,” Mr. Karimov said.
fucking sickening
Murderers. The world should apply political pressure to stop this madness.
It's okay, they were probably ~globalists~.
Why would you post this
Murderers. The world should apply political pressure to stop this madness.
It's mainly on the rest of Russia to stop this, hopefully they do
this is depressing as fuck
It's mainly on the rest of Russia to stop this, hopefully they do
They won't.
Unfortunately Russia is not well known for supporting gays.
It's mainly on the rest of Russia to stop this, hopefully they do
In current (but really, always, when it comes to Russia) political climate, this would be ignored at best, and seen as a positive thing at worst.
The men were detained “in connection with their nontraditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such,”
so not only are they arresting gays, they are also arresting people who they think is gay this is all kinds of fucked up
Did that spokesman just ACTUALLY admit to fucking mass murder?
Did that spokesman just ACTUALLY admit to fucking mass murder?
No, he was implying that there were no gays in Chechnya to begin with. which is just lmao
It's mainly on the rest of Russia to stop this, hopefully they do
I think Putin will speak negatively about this but not really end up doing anything proper about it, probably more because Kadyrov is useful than him disliking gays, afaik anyway.
just the idea of a gay pride parade in the north caucasus is a fucking terrible idea, even without authorities in the area having bad human rights records, the threat of an armed terrorist attack would be extremely real.
No, he was implying that there were no gays in Chechnya to begin with. which is just lmao
I was more referring to the second part.
Because of course gay men are the most dangerous element of society.
I wonder how do they prove if someone is gay Or if they just skip that part and deal mob justice
I wonder how do they prove if someone is gay Or if they just skip that part and deal mob justice
I can imagine that it's just like the witch hunt in the medieval age, accusing someone is enough, you don't need any proof.
I wonder how do they prove if someone is gay Or if they just skip that part and deal mob justice
Do you really think they care about collecting any sort of evidence? Anyway, considering the region we're talking about, I'd rather run from there as fast as i could regardless of my sexual orientation. The government manages to maintain a semblance of order there by pouring money into the republic, but it looks like they don't have any true control over it, that money just keeps them from turning into what they used to be back in the 90s - a full scale rogue state right on our doorstep. Honestly, I don't see any civilized solution to this problem nowadays.
Places like this prove that we still have way too far to go on LGBT rights around the world. This is just absolutely disgusting.
I can imagine that it's just like the witch hunt in the medieval age, accusing someone is enough, you don't need any proof.
Yeah, I'm fairly sure this is one part "removing undesirables" and one part political purge for a whole clusterfuck.
It's mainly on the rest of Russia to stop this, hopefully they do
Nah, not the current fuckwits in power. They'd probably organize something like that in Russia proper if they knew it'd go as fine as it goes in Caucasus, and they're evidently not sure.
Not surprised. Chechnya and the caucasus region are among the worst shitholes in Russia.
One day, we'll look back at stories like this with the same disdain that we today reserve for goddamn mediaeval witch hunts. I will never, ever understand the reasoning behind shit like this. Knowing russias resident nutjob putin will do absolutely nothing to stop this (that is, if he doesnt end up straight-up supporting it) makes the whole situation worse. In a year where we're planning to send people to mars, creating huge scientific and sociological breakthroughs, we still have these fucking animals going around and commiting mass murder on a government scale.
Isn't this genocide?
Isn't this genocide?
Homosexuality is not genetic, nor are homosexuals a specific race or ethnicity, so it isn't genocide.
Homosexuality is not genetic, nor are homosexuals a specific race or ethnicity, so it isn't genocide.
Contrary to popular belief that isn't a requirement for genocide. The intention to destroy a whole group of people regardless of how you define that group would still work. Obviously the intent here is to destroy the group, and the group being gay men. It's obviously meeting several of the stages required for genocide.
Ehh, fair enough. I would still be reluctant to classify it as a genocide. Homosexuality occurs spontaneously; you can't destroy it by killing gays. It's certainly a mass murder situation.

As well as the denial that what you are doing is a crime.

The Nazis were genocidal, and their death camps housed everybody that they deemed "undesirable" be it for race, religion, sexual preference or political position.
