Tony Abbott launches campaign with defence of time in office
Former prime minister Tony Abbott has launched his campaign for re-election in his local seat with a rigorous defence of his time in office and a call to re-elect Malcolm Turnbull as prime minister.
Key points:
Mr Abbott lists free trade agreements, Sydney's second airport as among his greatest achievements in office
Labor, Greens, Xenophon and Christian Democrats also vying for Warringah seat
Warringah considered a "very safe" prospect for Liberals
Speaking at the Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club, Mr Abbott told his supporters he wanted to continue working for the electorate and the policies that defined his government.
But there was little sign of acrimony between Mr Abbott and the man who replaced him as prime minister, with Mr Turnbull receiving six mentions in total.
"We scrapped the carbon tax, we scrapped the mining tax, they said you'd never be able to do it, but we did," he said, before the backdrop of a large Australian flag.
Mr Abbott listed three free trade agreements and Sydney's second airport as among his top achievements in office.
To the cheers of faithful supporters, Mr Abbott defended his party's economic record, its record on immigration and the fight against terrorism.
"We made a very strong start to the task of budget repair ... we worked at home and abroad to keep this country safe in the face of challenges we have not seen for at least a generation," he said.
I've never actually met anyone who likes Tony Abbott. Where are all these people who support him at?

Probably like the tories here, many of the people who vote for then won't admit it.

I've seen a few on facebook. All deeply religious christians and what I'd consider radically right wing pretty much.
All the old cunts I've met said he was a clown. I guess I'm just fortunate I haven't crossed paths with one of his supporters, or at least they haven't admitted to it.

Yeah thanks for helping destroy the Planet. Now the whole world can bask in your gorgeous glory.
Piece of shit.
Question: Australians do you think he would be re-elected?

Yes.
He's in a strong Liberal seat and most people vote on party lines rather than on who is running for the individual seat.
I'd vote for Abbott, He seems to go out of his way to help and was fixing the problems that labor created after they got in.
However that's gone to hell with Malcolm Turnbull.

Their policies haven't even changed though. Turnball's just the face of the party.
I wonder if he is staying in parliament because he's hoping to do back to Malcolm what Kevin did back to Julia haha.

Almost definitely. Of the 150 seats in the House, probably like only 30 seats are swing seats. The other 120 seats are safely in the hands of whichever party is currently holding them. As Abbott is (was) such a high-profile MP, he is probably in one of the safest Liberal seats that the Liberals have.
And no, gerrymandering isn't a thing here. The voters of some areas tend to just like some parties more than others. Abbott's seat is in a pro-Liberal area.

At the last election, Abbott won his seat with 61% of the first-preference votes.
Oh well, at least we'll get more of David Pope's fantastic abbot gremlin

we don't elect people, we elect parties. or at least thats how its supposed to work and generally is how it works.
