Britain Putting CCTV Cameras in Homes to Make Sure Kids Do Their Homework
80 replies, posted
Thousands of "the worst families in England" are being put in "sin bins," or subsidized housing outfitted with closed-circuit cameras. The cameras will be used to ensure that children do their homework and go to bed on time. Holy shit.
The justification for this action is that if kids have structured upbringings, they won't get sucked into street crime and drugs. And because the housing is subsidized, the government isn't technically putting cameras in private homes; these are public homes.
But still, the precedent this sets is terrifying. This is the definition of a nanny state, a government that doesn't trust its citizens to live their lives autonomously so it sticks its nose into every little aspect of them for their own good.
Really, I think this can all be traced back to the Children's Secretary, Ed Balls. I mean, obviously Mr. Balls was mocked mercilessly as a child for his hilarious name. But really, Balls, do you have to take it out on the children of Britain?

It's their fault they are under surveillance by social services.
if you're innocent then you should have nothing to hide and have no logical reason for objecting the government watching you

I have nothing to hide, but I still don't want people knowing my personal business.

No. I just don't want people getting into my personal life.
The best defense against crime is embracing culture+community to eliminate/reduce the feeling of living in a poor community, not totalitarian government actions.
And good law enforcement for those special cases of course.
There's a reason the other thread was closed - the story is BS.

I will, and the government has no right to know unless they have a warrant.

the government has every right to know when you do something illegal, it is their job to stop you from harming the rest of society
No. I just don't want people getting into my personal life.
No doubt gizmondo's source is the express which a crock of shit.
Somebody's taking the term "nanny state" way too seriously.
Only in Britain.
This sucks because I always get my homework done in class.

So downloading an illegal file is the same as killing someone? Both are illegal

I'm sure he's just trying to provoke a reaction.
Do you think this is a good thing? Keep in mind I live in England.
Edit : Are YOU trying to provoke a reaction?
I never thought I'd say this, but this makes me want to move to the States.
