Alienware’s take on the a home entertainment console, the Alienware Alpha, is slated to launch in November. For those looking to buy one as soon as it hits shelves, the company has announced that the Alpha will be available for pre-purchase at Alienware.com, Dell.com, Amazon, and Walmart starting today, August 12, at 9:00 AM CST. The basic Alpha, which packs an i3 Haswell processor, 4 GB of RAM, a custom Maxwell GPU, and a 500 GB hard drive, will go for $549 (and includes a Xbox 360 controller), but users will have the option to up their Alpha to a Core i7 Haswell processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage. That actually sounds pretty shitty. Is the Graphics card something fantastic? The rest of it seems pretty obsolete.
I'll wait until it's in Beta before I consider a purchase.
I could build a computer equivalent to the Alpha for 300 dollars, maybe a bit more if I didn't have an extra gpu lying around. Seems like a ripoff.
so the I3 version is $549... no mention of the price of the i7 one though, probably means that your going to need a bigger bank account for that
Or I just keep my current PC and use my controller with that while it's plugged into my TV.
Guys, keep in mind this is designed and marketed to a group of people who are not willing or unable to build their own PC. As well it is made by a company, companies need to make a profit. While I am sure we could all slap an i5 + midrange card and 8GB or ram together, these machines are not marketed to the people currently building their own systems

Eh, I'd rather get a $600 Asus/Acer laptop but I'm not exactly Alienware's clientele

Not everyone is as technically versed to build a computer 2. Prebuilt laptops are even more inflated in price then their desktop counter parts 3. Assuming everyone has the time to build and learn to build a PC, yes I am aware it can be done in less than 4 hours from start to finish with Build/OS/drivers 4. wants to dick around with the RMA process of failed parts and warranty stuff You're paying a premium for convince, not for performance.
Just have patience on ebay and garage sale a lot, my current build costs under $400 and can run everything 2012 back max with 40fps minimum.
I just buy all my shit from Overclockers UK and it lasts for fucking years until I need to upgrade something, I ended up building my mates PC for £600 and it still eats most games today maxed out.

Assuming it's a GTX 750 (since those are the only Maxwell based chips right now), that's close to 400€ worth of hardware in it. Add to that the cost of a Windows license and a X360 controller and it doesn't really seem like much of a ripoff anymore. Now show me your mythical 300$ build please.
A i3 wont be enough to play @ max

Seriously the Prebuilt vs Build it your own is the same as "why do coffee shops exist when you can brew it yourself". Yes you pay a premium, yes you can make it cheaper yourself, but they still are all over because the ease and convince. If you're going about "well it's cheaper to build yourself, and here is how!" guess what this machine is not targeted or marketed to you.
um its a steam machine console.

If he plays mostly F2P/Source/Blizzard games then you can get one in that price range and it would run those types of games just fine. If you are thinking of getting him a beast laptop for 550-$600 to play like newer games at 1080p and 60fps then id have to say you wont ever find one for that.

For 200 extra you could get an ideapad y500 which will run arma2/arma3 on max settings, skyrim with a fancy AA enb, high res mods on full. A little over the budget you've outlined though.
Why settle for medium?
Because it cost 60 bucks for a 54w CPU, performs like a champ for most games. The fact you can get _anywhere_ near the build int terms of performance shows that it's really not that good of a deal.
I would like this just for the form factor, however I'm a little worried about the GPU. The fact they would go to sourcing a "custom" GPU suggests that it is either faster or slower than the 750Ti/860M, and I don't see it being faster due to the price.
