What the hell: Could a robot-child treat Pedophilia?
During a robotics conference last week, ethicists discussed the moral implications of using childlike-robots to help treat paedophiles.
The theory is that these machines would help provide a non-harmful outlet for an individual's sexual inclinations as part of a treatment programme. It's like providing methadone to heroin addicts, the reasoning goes.
Ronald Arkin, the mobile robot lab director at the Georgia Institute of Technology, was one of the participants at the conference who is in favour of pursing the idea. He told Forbes magazine's Kashmir Hill:
"There are no presumptions that this will assuredly yield positive results - I only believe it is worth investigating in a controlled way to possibly provide better protection to society from recidivism in sex offenders. If we can save some children, I think it's a worthwhile project."
Vice's Arielle Pardes says the logic of such arguments is straightforward:
"We realise that paedophilia isn't going anywhere, so we ought to find a way to deal with the lust for children in a way that keeps actual kids out of the equation. Hence, robots. It's child molestation, without the children."
Japan's technology is not that advanced yet

Is that the slogan they'll be using?
And I feel sorry for the poor souls who have to build the things. "What do you do for a living?" "Build AI destined to be raped by a sweaty middle age man"
Imagine the guys that have to build artificial private parts of children and test them for pedos
Yeah this will work already
I really don't know how to feel about this.

Robots are becoming increasingly lifelike

And more Uncanny Valley lookin!
Pedophilia is a mental illness, and it has to be treated as such. If this is one way to treat it, why the fuck not? It doesn't harm anybody, and the people with pedophilia get the help they need.

I doubt replacing children with robots to satisfy pedos intentions will do anything other than increase their necessity for real people
Besides making sex children robots is weird as fuck

Yeah! Let's start treating gays while we're at it.

The unfortunate thing with publicising this news is that you'll have a lot of people who don't fully grasp that it's a mental illness opposing this, feeling that anything that "helps paedophiles" is inherently immoral.

ATTENTION FACEPUNCH. PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE TROLL.
I've got no qualms with the introduction of these robots. I think it could help. I'm not sure if people would run out to get these, but the intentions are good.

Paedophile apologist, hmm? What's it like, being scum?
The methadone comparison is pretty good.... when you look at it like that, it's hard to disagree.
I wish robots just looked metallic. Not-human, looks really damn awkward.
It'd make them more fuckable too.

mmmm~
im all for whatever works and doesn't get anyone hurt, but when the robot uprising happens, they'll never let us live this shit down
I won't lie. As soon as I read the headline, I pictured a robot punching the ever-loving shit out of a paedophile's dick.
While I think that the idea itself is really cool, it will take ages before we learn to make robots that imitate human behaviour well enough for it to work even remotely well
also, these robots are gonna be expensive as fuck, is someone is pedo and rich enough to afford a one of these, chances are he will probably stick with the real thing anyways (unless he is sane enough to realize how bad pedophilia is, but then he would probably reject this treatment as well, seeing it as disgusting)
Props for trying though. It's always good to see a paedophile treatment proposition that isn't *gunshot*.

They arnt suggesting these would be commercially available, but rather a part of specific treatment program

Well, yeah. But you have to admit it definitely feels like a really awkward idea.

Where does one find these types of notifications? Just curious.
There is no way this is going to work, any pedophile that would actually harm a child clearly lack basic morals and aren't going to be satisfied with a robot.

Or maybe some might recognise their condition and go seek help before it's too late?
Well, yeah. But you have to admit it definitely feels like a really awkward idea.
A few awkward feels </> saving children from possible lifetime trauma ? Feels pretty worth it man
This is just going to leave Pedophiles unsatisfied and frustrated. It's not going to help.

What does lack of morals have to do with satisfaction?
Besides, what authority allows you to make a statement like that? Are you a psychologist?
[editline]19th July 2014[/editline]
I would also reread what the guy said if I were you guys
"There are no presumptions that this will assuredly yield positive results - I only believe it is worth investigating in a controlled way to possibly provide better protection to society from recidivism in sex offenders. There's an idea for treatment of a serious social issue and these guys want to research and INVESTIGATE it.
But no, internet know-it-alls with literally no knowledge of neither robotics nor psychology know better.
What does lack of morals have to do with satisfaction?
Besides, what authority allows you to make a statement like that? Are you a psychologist?
The aim of this is to prevent real kids from being molested, and if you are fine with abusing a kid you are obviously lacking morals.

Oh I am not disagreeing with that but how did

relate to that?
Besides, "lack of morals" isn't a binary thing, just like lack of bravery or dedication. There's likely a group of people willing to seek help but still too degraded to control themselves without it, unless you think the world is black and white.
