The changes are expected to be applied to every subject and are being introduced in the wake of concerns that Britain's children are leaving school unable to read and write properly. The new rules are to be outlined in an education White Paper next week. Education Secretary Michael Gove warned last month that an urgent shake-up of the curriculum and exam system was needed to prevent the UK being left behind by other countries. He told delegates at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham that the "basic building blocks of English have been demolished". It was, he argued, every child's right to be taught how to communicate clearly. He said: "Thousands of children - including some of our very brightest - leave school unable to compose a proper sentence, ignorant of basic grammar, incapable of writing a clear and accurate letter." It is understood the White Paper will also propose: - A departure from modular courses in some subjects in favour of tests at the end of two years of study, marking something of a return to the traditional A-level format. - Offering universities the opportunity to have an input into A-level exams and courses so that students are better prepared for a degree. - A new "English Baccalaureate", rewarding pupils for achieving five good GCSEs in English, maths, science, foreign languages and a humanities subject.
You mean they didn't do this before?
I am pretty sure AQA already has preset marks for written communication
Marks will be docked for poor spelling, punctuation and grammer in GSCE exams, under new rules.
Whoever wrote the article gets a U holy shit I just realised they didn't even spell GCSE right :v:
GSCE exams
Just saying, we've already had this in place for US standardized tests. But really? Were papers turned in with a bunch of phone/text lingo instead of words?
This should really only be in effect for any subject that is supposed to be a test of your literacy, it'd be nonsensical to have marks docked in say, a subject like Mathematics or Science if you happen to make spelling mistakes or don't write in a very eloquent manner even though your answer is correct. Maybe this is the case already, I've only read what was in the OP, my point stands though.

Good thing I'm good at englush. :smug:
Im' very good at grammertical choyces so i shuldent fayl my GESCs
AQA did this from the beginning anyway. Guessing Edexcel and whoever didn't, which - in my opinion - is stupid, seeing as good spelling and grammar = good English.
In Spain, the exams of entry to University (PAU; Pruebas de Acceso Universitario) recently changed. If you make 2 to 5 accentuation mistakes (´) you lose 0.5 points, and if you make 6 to 10 points you lose 1 point. If you make 2 to 5 grammar mistakes, you will lose 1 point, If you make 6 to 10 mistakes you lose 2 points. This is for every single subject including subjects like maths and physics. (Before this school year it used to be .25 per mistake, up to a maximum of 2 points.) I would like to know why this wasn't done before in England.
Silly English people :scotland: If the 'very brightest' students in England can't rite rite then I worry for the changes to Scottish education coming in a few years which will make it closer to the English stuff.
Silly English people :scotland: If the 'very brightest' students in England can't rite rite then I worry for the changes to Scottish education coming in a few years which will make it closer to the English stuff.
we raped and killed your people.
Silly English people :scotland: If the 'very brightest' students in England can't rite rite then I worry for the changes to Scottish education coming in a few years which will make it closer to the English stuff.
we get fucking curriculum for excellence bs fucking SQA standard grades is where it's at
Silly English people :scotland: If the 'very brightest' students in England can't rite rite then I worry for the changes to Scottish education coming in a few years which will make it closer to the English stuff.
You Scotts Leech off us English, We pay for your Uni education but you don't pay for ours
You Scotts Leech off us English, We pay for your Uni education but you don't pay for ours
this is why we should let scotland secede, watch them run their country into the ground, so we can teach them that they should never be allowed to run anything in my opinion
You Scotts Leech off us English, We pay for your Uni education but you don't pay for ours
I know, it's awesome. Also if you're going out could you stop by the store and pick up some beer? I swear I'll pay you back when I get payed.
This needs to be done because it's seems and feels like over half the kids aren't literate
You Scotts Leech off us English, We pay for your Uni education but you don't pay for ours
Troll harder.
im good grammer, no worry
Now watch all the chavs fail their GCSE's. IT WILL BE GLORIOUS!
This should only be done for incredibly obvious mistakes, I don't think you can really blame a 15 year old for messing up the spelling of 'Homeostasis' when they're about as stressed as possible trying to answer a science question right.
Now watch all the chavs fail their GCSE's. IT WILL BE GLORIOUS!
They'd fail anyway.
You Scotts Leech off us English, We pay for your Uni education but you don't pay for ours
And? We get a budget and we spend it wisely, unlike some people. We do pay for yours. Ever heard of taxes and subsidising
With my C in GCSE english I can take on the world.
