Studies: Cannabinoids Protect the Brain and Heart From Injury
A May 30th blog post on the website Science20.com sums up new findings from Israel regarding the ability of low doses of THC to prevent brain damage in animals.
Prof. Yosef Sarne in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Tel Aviv University says that [cannabis] … has neuroprotective qualities. He has found that extremely low doses of THC — the psychoactive component of marijuana — protects the brain from long-term cognitive damage in the wake of injury from hypoxia (lack of oxygen), seizures, or toxic drugs.
Previous studies focused on injecting high doses of THC within a very short time frame – approximately 30 minutes – before or after injury. Sarne’s papers in Behavioural Brain Research and Experimental Brain Research say that even extremely low doses of THC – around 1,000 to 10,000 times less than that in a conventional marijuana cigarette – administered over a wide window of 1 to 7 days before or 1 to 3 days after injury can jump-start biochemical processes which protect brain cells and preserve cognitive function over time.
… In the lab, the researchers injected mice with a single low dose of THC either before or after exposing them to brain trauma. A control group of mice sustained brain injury but did not receive the THC treatment. When the mice were examined 3 to 7 weeks after initial injury, recipients of the THC treatment performed better in behavioral tests measuring learning and memory. Additionally, biochemical studies showed heightened amounts of neuroprotective chemicals in the treatment group compared to the control group.
… This treatment, especially in light of the long time frame for administration and the low dosage, could be applicable to many cases of brain injury and be safer over time, Sarne says.
NORML has previously reported on separate preclinical data documenting that cannabinoids can promote neurogenesis (the active production of new neurons) in laboratory animals as well observational data indicating that marijuana may provide neuroprotection against alcohol-induced impairment in adolescent subjects.

Before you go and discredit this study, checkout the other studies done. This is especially interesting to me because my only parent almost died of a heart attack last Sunday
Weed is becoming the drug world's graphene.
mmm weed :)

why cant we all just be friends and take bong rips
fyi "cannabinoid" refers to an extremely broad set of chemicals of which THC is only one
Weird, because every time I smoke 5 bongs in a row it feels like i'm gonna have a fucking heart attack
Weird, because every time I smoke 5 bongs in a row it feels like i'm gonna have a fucking heart attack
THC raises your blood pressure, that plus the slight oxygen deprivation that 5 bongs in a row would do doesn't set your heart up for a very fun ride.
And tomorrow there'll be a study on how weed gives you all the cancers and then after that there'll abe a study on how it cures aids and so on.
Can we quit it with the studies already, they serve no purpose

You heard it right here folks, studies serve no purpose.

It's called moderation.
It's called moderation.
Agreed, you're supposed to smoke the shit to feel better.
Oh shit sorry I forgot im on facepunch.
420 blaze it erryday

And weed isn't only THC.
And weed isn't only THC.
yeah there's a dickload of other chemicals in the smoke that can fuck you up, which can be mitigated by using a vape or something, but not completely
point is, take these kinds of headlines with a grain of salt. it's like when you see "substance X cures cancer!" when it's really massive doses of substance X that caused some cancer cells to die on a petri dish.
breakyourfac is doing the same for weed related SH threads as I do with police threads

Turn back now.
A blog post about a blog post about a study? Sounds legit
Also check his sources:

and then its tagline: "Working to reform marijuana laws"

Man, fuck science, it does nothing for anyone!
other studies done. This is especially interesting to me because my only parent almost died of a heart attack last Sunday
so a "study" that says THC minimizes permanent brain damage in recovering animals is somehow related to someones heart fibrillating/asystole?
Did you even read your own article?
Damn, sorry to hear about your lose man...
I'll be invincible.

420 smoke weed errday blaze it faggot

fyi every pot plant has a wide and differing variety of cannabinoids in different stages of development

Feels like xkcd is always relevant
I don't get why people think THC is the only thing in pot.
You'd have to be a hardcore motherfucker to take straight THC, apparently it acts somewhat like Salvia when not combined with the dozens of cannabinoids found in pot.
There's a lot of good to come from weed, and there's a lot of bad to come from it too. Research on it is in its infancy, so take most of the news on how it's a cancer-curing miracle drug with a grain of salt. Modafinil is touted a no-side-effect miracle drug/non-stimulant replacement for adderall when in reality it's got some pretty terrible possible side effects and reactions. There's a political agenda behind pot legalization, and research on it isn't exactly widespread, so you have to expect that differing groups will put out conflicting information.
Give it a few more years and you'll see more genuine studies on pot coming out, and the scientific community reaching a consensus rather than having dozens of conflicting studies and no real idea.
This topic is interesting, but not news.
