After a remarkable group stages—for all the wrong reasons—Valve's flagship Major series of Dota 2 tournaments has run into further delays and production issues.

The ceremony itself, for what was visible on Chinese streams, was an almost comical event, as the spotlight to highlight teams sitting in their booths in the stand as they were announced highlighted empty seats with a flag draped above them.According to Kyle "swindlemelonzz" Freedman, a player on American side CompLexity, said the opening ceremony fluctuated between being mandatory for players, to then an optional commitment, to apparently cancelled within around 3 hours notice.
Though he still turned up to the ceremony, Freedman says miscommunication among event staff meant he was almost not allowed to take his seat.
"For the opening I got directed to an elevator, and then the guy working it didnt want to let me out on our floor," Freedman tweeted. "He tried to stop me."

The teams can also hear the in-arena Chinese broadcasters while in their booths, which are usually soundproofed at major events like ESL One, last year's Frankfurt Major (organised by ESL) and The International.
In an attempt to combat this, the action on screen is delayed by 5 minutes to prevent Chinese teams from being able to overhear critical information that could give them an edge.

Further issues with broadcast bandwidth took the stream offline completely after a severely delayed first match between Alliance and MVP, eventually returning a full 5 hours behind the first day's schedule.
These are just few in many fuck-ups. This is an earlier article, but what just happened recently is that somehow the Shanghai staff lost a player's keyboard, made the manager fetch a new one cause they didn't have any on hand, forgot to tell him that they have a mandatory closing time in the venue, and ended the entire shitshow on-scene by kicking out the fans to tell them the next series will be online.

At the moment, the entire fanbase is either pissed at the incompetence or too busy laughing at it. Maybe both. Thing is, I don't think there has been a more glorious fuck-up than this in professional gaming history. Especially when Valve is overseeing this whole thing.
Have a funny picture to end the thread, this is how the Russians are casting this tournament cause the Shanghai staff is fucking awful.

What a fucking joke.
I would be pissed if I had paid money to go to the event.
Not even starladder is as big of a joke as this tournament.
Made in China indeed.
Has anyone compiled a list of all the fuck-ups in this tournament?
It would be interesting to see.
Valve is ultimately in charge of their reputation here, and it is really plummeting recently. They've made so many mistakes in the past few months, I'm starting to think EA and Ubisoft's push for esports might be a bit more professional at least.
to quote what I said in the dota thread, I haven't seen a trainwreck this large since I watched Super 8.
Dedicated to incompetence. I hope people get their money back.

Here's a few I picked out
The "VIP" Room

compLexity Gaming has serious elevator problems

Bonnie was originally just supposed to translate, she's now doing 20 different jobs and not being paid for the extra work

The live stage is supposed to have sound proof booths. The booths they have aren't. This means any player that speaks Chinese can hear the broadcasters talking and learn vital information during a match

There's alot more mind you
What's next, everyone's computer lights on fire?

I'm pretty fucking sure that Valve isn't responsible for this desaster since all those fuckups have been made by the organisation (Perfect World) they are cooperating with for this event. They even announced earlier that they won't work with them anymore. Just like how ESL One isn't being handled solely by Valve but by ESL. Valve is only the sponsor, all those technical thingies that have been fucked up were commited by Perfect World.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Gabe already said they're firing the company they hired to organize this event.

ill point out this one is because of how shanghai works. metros close around 10-11 and cleaning crews stop working at around the same time, so they need to clean the arena before all the crews leave.
of course this comes down to all the delays from production but you know

You aren't, but everyone wants to stand on their soapbox and complain about valve recently using whatever they can. Even valve employees there haven't had passes and such, it's been all down to the crews.
Do Chinese shows tend to be of lower quality?
Gabe already said they're firing the company they hired to organize this event.
But they can't fire the arena crew and the people in charge of the building sadly.

It's a mixed bag. Also merge break.
Can't wait for an official statement from Valve after this, it's just so insane how badly this is going!
Apparently the stream is 5 minutes delayed because the Chinese government wants an official to review the footage before it goes out

"DotA 2 is an ass. We won't be working with him again."
Also the monitor issue. At first they had 60hz Samsung monitors but those were replaced with Benq 144hz monitors. So the staff placed Samsung stickers on Benq monitors.

I know they hired a production company for the event, but the whole thing still boils down to: Valve owns the tournament, Valve has responsibility.
If I go to a dodgy mechanic to fix my car and he fucks it up, it is his fault, but the car is still my responsibility to look after.
Valve should be doing public damage control now, and making sure all the people who put their time into this event get reimbursed in some way at the same time as making sure Perfect World doesn't get away with this fuck up.
Hell, the top dog Gabe made a public statement about some commentator making a silly joke and fired the guy, but when his whole event fucks up, all I am seeing is a load of removed reddit threads.
Do Chinese shows tend to be of lower quality?
Depends on the game I assume. I bet if this was a LoL tournament it'd run much smoother.
Also, did you guys watch the first Alliance vs Team Liquid game yesterday?Roughly 10 minutes into the game, literally demonic sounds started playing from the game feed. Sounded like Godzilla was fighting Satan. They cut the game sounds, then replace the English game feed with the Chinese feed. So all the in game text and announcements were in Chinese, and the English casters were essentially commenting on the Chinese stream :v:

The opening ceremony, apparently the lag wasn't even on the recorders end but on the stream.
Looks more like a fuckup of the Chinese production team rather than Valve
3 hours and 30 minutes off schedule.
What in the flying spaghetti monster.
I especially love the empty seats.
Didn't know it was possible to trump Dashcon.
Can't wait for an official statement from Valve after this, it's just so insane how badly this is going!
That's if they even respond, knowing Valve and how shitty they are with communicating with everyone I doubt they will say anything.

That's nothing. The problem is even with the delays everything is still the worst fucking thing possible.

The reddit threads were removed to condense them into a megathread. And while valve will need to fix this after, there's little they can do now as using your analogy, the car is still at the mechanics. They do not have complete access to it (this is perfect world's tournament, just like DAC which this replaced), nor can the suddenly up and import entire crews to replace stadium staff and production. They have to use what they have access to in china, which is all low quality work.
Valve really needs to get more involved with things like this. I mean, it's not their fault it was this bad, but it's their fault they hired a company that could do this bad, if that makes sense.
I also remember Deadmau5 talking about when Valve asked him to play after a tournament last year they just said "Yeah, play some stuff" and that was about it. Valve really needs to be more hands on.
They've already said they won't be working with them again, there isn't much more Valve could do other than that.
But some people won't be happy until every staff member at Valve personally apologizes and Gabe publicly gets 500 lashes.
