Some more news from Libya. I don't think this has been posted yet and it may interest some people.
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged the global body's Security Council to take "decisive action" over the Libya crisis. Speaking at a meeting of the Security Council in New York, Mr Ban warned of a growing refugee and food crisis. In Libya, anti-government protesters in the capital Tripoli came under heavy gunfire on Friday, reports say. State TV showed pictures of embattled leader Muammar Gaddafi addressing supporters. At the UN, Mr Ban said "clear and egregious" violations of human rights had occurred in Libya, and more than 1,000 people had died in the unrest so far. "It is time for the Security Council to consider concrete action," Mr Ban told the 15-nation council. "The hours and the days ahead will be decisive for Libyans." Mr Ban said 22,000 people had fled Libya via Tunisia, and a further 15,000 via Egypt. "Much larger numbers are trapped and unable to leave," he added. "There are widespread reports of refugees being harassed and threatened with guns and knives." He said it was important for neighbouring countries, including those Europe, to keep their borders open to those fleeing the violence. Mr Ban also said that there was a food crisis inside Libya that the UN World Food Programme (WFP) expected to worsen. The WFP says Libya's food supply chain is at risk of collapse because imports have not been getting into the country and food distribution is hampered by violence. Diplomats at the UN Security Council say Britain and France have drawn up a draft resolution with a package of measures aimed at isolating Libya's political and military leaders. Elements could include targeted sanctions, an arms embargo, and a proposed referral of the situation in Libya to the International Criminal Court.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12585949 It seems that certain people in other threads were right, the UK/EU are the people most likely to try and sort this out. Will be interesting to see just what the measures are and if they will have any real effect if the resolution ever goes through. The link also has Gaddafi's speech of the day, he calls for his supporters to sing dance and be ready. Oh and he seems to be talking in the third person today. (If the translation is correct)
Angry letter.
Embargo's and sanctions won't stop Gaddafi's brutal genocide on his people.
They'll bomb him with letters in hopes of suffocating him
They're going to revoke his limousine parking privileges at the UN Consulate building. That'll teach him.
I am confused. Is this guy's name "Ban Ki-moon"? Who's Ki-moon and what did he do to anybody?
I am confused. Is this guy's name "Ban Ki-moon"? Who's Ki-moon and what did he do to anybody?
He's Korean. Secretary General of the UN.
If you guys promise not to turn on us after doing it you can let the US assassinate him.
Why haven't the Americans interfered like they do in every other revolution with dictators?
Why haven't the Americans interfered like they do in every other revolution with dictators?
Because the lesser, smaller countries like UK, Germany, France bitch at us yet don't take action themselves.
Embargo's and sanctions won't stop Gaddafi's brutal genocide on his people.
Unless the sanction is "complete no fly zone, enforced by lethal force", but even that won't really help now. Maybe it would have 7 days ago, but it is too late for that now it seems. [editline]25th February 2011[/editline]
Why haven't the Americans interfered like they do in every other revolution with dictators?
I am guessing there's two reasons, one being the fact that they stand to gain little to nothing from doing so, and secondly the fact that you cannot invade a country with a weeks notice. What do you expect them to intervene with and what do you expect them to do once they get in?
Because the lesser, smaller countries like UK, Germany, France bitch at us yet don't take action themselves.
You talk as if you play a massive part in your country, when you dont, so shut up.
Because the lesser, smaller countries like UK, Germany, France bitch at us yet don't take action themselves.
Oh hey Obama.
Oh hey Obama.
So this is the reason nothing is getting done these days, Obama is posting on facepunch.
The UN Will say stuff but won't do nothing about it.
The UN Will say stuff but won't do nothing about it.
They might send a strong worded letter.
As if they really could do anything. All they're doing is putting another nail in the coffin of Libya's government, which is already shut so tight it could withstand an assault by God himself.
i thought they were banning something called ki-moon :downs:
As if they really could do anything. Whatever happens, guy is fucked.
I don't think that's all he's up against. Whatever happens, guy is fucked.
I really think that he is not going to step down no matter what people try. It's just going to get worse to be honest.
oh no not the UN!
Once again this kind of shit fails because nobody really supports collective security and/or the UN doesn't have its own standing army.
Because the lesser, smaller countries like UK, Germany, France bitch at us yet don't take action themselves.
And consequently don't get bogged down in unpopular wars.
They'll bomb him with letters in hopes of suffocating him
Do you have many trees they'll have to cut down to send all those letters? One will suffice.
Angry letter.
Politically "Angry Letters" are more then just a few words. It's basically a "You best stop this before we fucking kill you, you old fuck." warning.
Politically "Angry Letters" are more then just a few words. It's basically a "You best stop this before we fucking kill you, you old fuck." warning.
No they aren't, they certainly didn't stop Hitler. The UN won't do shit it's NATO that gets shit done for better or for worse.
No they aren't, they certainly didn't stop Hitler. The UN won't do shit it's NATO that gets shit done for better or for worse.
Several member states have said that NATO isn't going to intervene though
Amazing that NATO laid waste to Yugoslavia without a second thought but isn't even going to consider intervening here.
No they aren't, they certainly didn't stop Hitler. The UN won't do shit it's NATO that gets shit done for better or for worse.
Well that might have something to do with the fact that the UN was founded in 1945. [editline]26th February 2011[/editline]
Amazing that NATO laid waste to Yugoslavia without a second thought but isn't even going to consider intervening here.
To be fair the whole thing in Yugoslavia went on for years, this has been going on for only a few weeks. Maybe if it drags out into months they may consider doing something.
