Gaza City (CNN) -- After weeks of fighting, hundreds of deaths, some semblance of peace may be coming to the Middle East -- at least temporarily.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced Thursday that an unconditional humanitarian cease-fire will begin at 8 a.m. local time in Gaza. It will last 72 hours -- or three days -- "unless extended," the United Nations said in a statement.
"During this time, the forces on the ground will remain in place," the statement said.
The cease-fire is meant to allow humanitarian aid to reach civilians in Gaza caught up in the violence, some of whom have seen their neighborhoods hit hard and loved ones killed, hurt or displaced.
will end at 1:05AM EST
Considering Israel has little to no respect for the UN or its sanctions (they bombs a fucking UN-run school for fucks sake after being told 17 times it was full of civilians) and most those living in the Gaza strip dont exactly have access to this information... This'll be over very quickly.

Just like all the other times where it was Israel who broke the truces, right?
So who's got the "72-Hour Humanitarian Truce broken in Gaza." thread typed up and ready to go in a half hour?

I bet for Lamar. Bonus point if he puts "IDF" in the title.
It's nice to hear that despite the situation, people can get the proper time to mourn and prepare... assuming Hamas doesn't break the truce twenty minutes after.
Israel will be allowed to" act defensively" on the tunnels that are behind current battle lines.
There will be no "cease-fire".

I'll take the bet, I think it's gonna be someone else, and they're gonna post that it was ended by a Hamas rocket attack, but then Starpluck will edit the title to blame the IDF. Bonus points if he makes a post saying he did it because "the source was biased".

yes, kids will be able to "properly" mourn their parents and parents will be able to "properly" mourn their kids in those 72 hours before Israel's military continues on massacring them.
Oh great, 72 hours until the civilian slaughter resumes. Thank you Netanaziu.
Watch as some dumbass on either side fires and the truce is ended.

I hope you realize that historically it has been mostly Israel that has broken the truces with Hamas or provoked them into conflict.
One time even the UN went as far as congratulating Hamas for not rising to IDF provocations.
"We're gonna get some food, water and medical aid in there then you can get back to killing each other. Oh? You wanted a permanent solution? Too bad."
Just for the sake of a few numbers.
Valerie Amos, UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief co-ordinator, called for daily "humanitarian pauses" in the fighting to help aid reach civilians in the territory.
Amos provided the UN briefing with these numbers on the conflict:
-More than 9,000 homes in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed, according to preliminary reports.
-Two of the three main UN compounds have been damaged.
-Twenty-four medical facilities have been damaged or destroyed, some hit multiple times.
-More than 130 schools and other educational facilities have sustained damage.
-Gaza's only power plant was struck on Tuesday, destroying the fuel tanks.
-Hundreds of thousands of people are without access to regular water.
well that lasted long
And its officially over.
Both sides blame each other, you know the drill.
It was only a matter of time..
I notice a lot of people banking on Hamas breaking the truce and it makes me curious. People talk about Hamas like it's a standing army but how much control do they actually have over the various militants in Gaza?
That's not a rhetorical question, I'm actually pretty interested. I've always pictured them to be way more splintered than a coordinated force.
Apparently Hamas broke the truce because Israel was using the cease-fire to continue to destroy tunnels unimpeded. Which they said they would do during it.
Accoring to WSJ
Israel said it wouldn't pull back forces inside Gaza during the truce. The terms also allow it to continue destroying infiltration tunnels it has already uncovered, the State Department official said.

A Gaza ceasefire crumbled only hours after it began on Friday, with at least 40 Palestinians killed by Israeli shelling and Israel accusing militants of violating the U.S.- and U.N.-brokered truce by firing rockets and mortars.
....
The Israeli military had no immediate comment but media reports said the shelling began after Hamas fighters exchanged fire with Israeli soldiers on a mission to destroy infiltration tunnels.

More details. Hamas killed two soldiers and captured another an hour after the cease-fire started. Israel is responding.

Hamas was responding to the IDF using the ceasefire to destroy Hamas infrastructure.

...Even though it wad in the terms of the cease fire that Hamas accepted.

Now that's just being generous.
