• My Issues Regarding "Disabilities" Threads
    180 replies, posted
Recently there have been a few threads around about physical and sometimes mental disabilities, like this one. I'm just irate with the way people on Facepunch treat this people with these problems, so I felt I might give my opinion on it and broaden someone's view. Get ready for a [img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/rating/heart.png[/img] speech: When I was 2 my little brother was born. But not normally. 2 weeks than early predicted, my mother had to undergo a C-section to cut him out due to respiratory problems. Only problem is, he was born....kind of like seen in the pictures in OP. However, the disease he suffers from is called Gordon's Syndrome. It's a muscular disease, in the most simple terms possible, where the muscular fibers are just a bit tighter, causing his hands to curl up into a slight C shape, and he doesn't really have an ankle, and his feet are kind of messed up. His face is a little tight, and on top of it all, he is a ginger... He does go around in a wheelchair, but can walk short distances. He does attract a lot of attention, and a lot of stares, and some distraught comments (and I have actually punched a kid in the face in 7th grade because he said to my brother to "wheel his fucked up ass home"). Point is, my parents knew he had this life ahead of him. He cost our family over 2 million in medical bills. SO WAI NOT JUST KILL HIM? Because as I stated, a life is a life. I have learned from him to treat everyone with a disability the same. One of my best friends has tourettes, and another is in a wheelchair. Just because you see someone that is disabled, don't say, "lawl she/he looks fucking stoopid, they are nawt going to reproduce ehehehe, cripples like dis cost so much fucking state money kill them all" It irritates me that when people who have never experienced this blatantly go off into some forum and post a thread title of a disease, and put *NSFW* because OF A LITTLE GIRL'S FACE . My heart literally shatters like glass when I drive by to see my brother watching his friends play baseball in the park while he sits on a bench across the field. He has actually told me a few times that he has contemplated suicide. I just ask that people expand your horizons. These are actual people, impaired with a disadvantage at life, trying to live. Laughing and pointing don't help. I don't blame most people for this. Someone looks different, it's natural to stare. The stares I get when I'm with my brother used to be weird and unnatural, but my brother seems to be used to it. Go ahead, you may resume the images and puns, but I just hope that I have at least changed one person's ideology towards this subject. Tl;dr : Read it goddamnit, I just poured my heart out.
I am sorry for your lots
Depending on my condition, if it was rather bad, I would suicide or wish someone to kill me. But it depends on how bad it is. But overall, you shouldn't listen to FP as most of us are 13 and know nothing of real life and how it works. Hence why 12yr olds don't get into ruling countries.
I was born two weeks premature. The doctors said I would be a vegetable and never walk. I proved those fuckers wrong. Though I am getting the first surgery of a bilateral hip replacement this summer. A few months after my 18th birthday. I know exactly what you're saying.

You wouldn't know any better, you would think the life you have is the only life.
Oh for fuck's sake, don't be an ultra-PC tightwad just because you have a special-needs brother. Guess what? I do too. My 9-year-old little bro's autistic and almost completely nonverbal. Does that mean I suddenly have to start taking every single thing relating to disabilities seriously? No. I'm allowed to have a laugh at whatever the fuck I want to; if it offends you, then don't read it and move on to a different thread. And the reason why the Treacher-Collins thread was tagged NSFW was because, well, the images are graphic. Not everyone wants to start their day by seeing a horrifically deformed little girl.
If you do have those problems, do you know of a better life? And if I was in a wheelchair, I would totally see what's wrong with mine. So yes, I know that my life is rather bad when people point and laugh.
Why do you think God invented hammers? :downs:
i' have poor eyesight so i get what you're saying disabilities unite

You know why he contemplated suicide? Because he lives a life of pain and misery. The way I see it, aborting him would have been the humane decision.
i' have poor eyesight so i get what you're saying disabilities unite
I'm shortsighted too, that's common and nothing bad compared to the one in the op. Just wear lenses or glasses. Really, no one gives a stare at people in glasses anyway. Hell, you can even fix it with a lazer.

In your case, I bet people see your brother and at first impression think he's "retarded" when the truth is anything but. I know some highly gifted autistic people.
You know why he contemplated suicide? Because he lives a life of pain and misery. Point is, with abortion, you are ending a life. A whole life. Something that is so big, your mind can not fit its grasp around it, hence the controversial nature. You either go with the philosophy that you are given a life and you make the most out of it, or end it, not knowing the possibilities.

If they want to laugh about it, I might be mildly annoyed, but in the grand scheme of things it's not such a big deal; it isn't my place to try and force people to feel a certain way, and I would be something of a hypocrite if I did that anyways.

I'm legally blind and almost blind by definition. If they don't stabilize and keep getting worse, Lasik can't fix it and I'll be legit blind. Which is scary. :saddowns:
It's the worst when you know it's bad, but it's so funny you still crack a laugh. Look like an asshole then

If it were possible that I could see myself with one of these disabilities, I would want to be killed/aborted. I just would hate my life if I knew I couldn't function properly in the world and would be casted out for it.
It's the worst when you know it's bad, but it's so funny you still crack a laugh. Look like an asshole then
It's normal to do so. At the first glance, a autistic kid pulling his pants down to the floor and pissing all over the bathroom could be funny, but at a second glance, you should realize it isn't.
You haven't changed my ideology towards this, but I already agree with you. I have an autistic brother. Most of you (facepunchers) imagined someone in a wheelchair just then, you would be wrong. You probably think that he has no personality, that he has no concept of enjoyment. Wrong again! He likes several things, like animals (especially baby ones, like puppies or ducklings). Trains are his favorite (he asks to go trainwatching at the local train station with my dad) and he watches loads of train videos on youtube. He also likes Mario Kart which he is very good at (better than me 90% of the time) and he is great fun to play against but he bursts into fits of giggles whenever someone launches one of those blue winged shells (I think it's the whole explosion thing, everyone in our family is a bit of a pyromaniac :v:) and he beats me reguarly. So yeah, all this stuff people think about disabled people is steriotype, not that much different from the steriotypes about black people or (one you guys should be able to understand) the gamer.

It's alright to crack a laugh here and there. Hell, I laugh at myself all the time for the misfortunes this set of legs has given me. It's the people who look at disabled and retarded people and mock and treat them like they are of lesser quality of them. Physical shortcomings should not affect anyone's place in society.

Most people with Autisim excel greatly at certain things and slack in others. They are however, by no means retarded.
That was a great OP. I commend your attitude Kevn150, you seem like a good guy, and brother. And Im very sorry for your brothers condition, it is cruel and unfair. However, you have to remember, many of these comments which offend you are born of Ignorance, and misplaced humour. Many people dont have the insight you do, and therefore cant understand how serious the subject of disability is. They are ignorant is all, they cant fully appreciate how much a stupid comment can hurt people. Also, everything in life can be attributed humour, Checkout Jonathan Katz, he's a great comedian who uses his own Multiple Slerosis as a tool in his standup shows. No subject on earth should be exempt from comedy, because it helps people build up tolerance and unerstanding of that issue. And helps people suffering from an issue to see a lighter side sometimes. But moronic reprobates with poorsocial skills cant gauge when a comment just becomes insultive and stops being funny. They think that because people laugh AT THEM, they must be funny. However there is a limit to what is funny. And some comments are just vile, deplorable attention seeking crap. Humour goes out the window when genuine offenceiveness is shown. For this I support everything you said Kevn150. And anyway, If i were you, i wouldnt be worried about these ignorant, and very stupid people. You just keep you and your Bro happy, and fuck these morons. Most of these idiots will never be able to appreciate how good they'v got it. And therefore cannot build an understanding of how tough life is for others. Great Post Kevn150.

Like it or not, it is the truth. I am also not saying that I don't feel for them, quite the opposite actually; Tell me, would you want to continue your life if you were severely mentally retarded and you couldn't care for yourself in any way, shape, or form?

In our school we have a wheelchair bound retard who does nothing more significient then gets rolled around and screams random phrases or words or gibberish.
