holy shit, what am I supposed to do when confronted by a bear?

holy shit, what am I supposed to do when confronted by a bear?

holy shit, what am I supposed to do when confronted by a bear?

holy shit, what am I supposed to do when confronted by a bear?
climb a tree. bears can't climb trees.

Actually many species can. I think the best course of action if you come face to face is to curl up and play dead, protecting your head and neck as much as possible. The bear will (hopefully) lose interest if you stay still.

If its a black bear then just confront it. Skip to 2:10

This.
It's why if you go to Gatlinburg TN and you see a sign at the start of a 2 mile trail that goes up a mountain through the woods that says no firearms, you ignore it. Or you may end up like that one woman who was mauled and killed
holy shit, what am I supposed to do when confronted by a bear?
curl up in to an assball and pray
Thread reminded me of the advice from a disney show.
"When a bears nearby don't act silly, to escape him simply run down hilly"

You're gonna have to pack one hell of a powerful gun if you mean to drop a bear in one shot before it gets to you. Bear spray is much more useful.

I know of some kids who were hiking up in Alaska with a guide, and a polar bear was trying to get into their lodge. They managed to shoot it three times, once in the head, and it was still trying to get in. Took five of them to hold the door shut

Very interesting thread about bears
Bears are cute.
shoot it
In the leg.
Tell you one thing, I'd much rather get attacked by a bear than a chimp.

I think it goes something like this. If it's a black bear confront it as they are quite calm. If its a grizzly play dead, they usually come back after killing prey and eat when decomposition kicks in or something. If its a polar bear however you are fucked, it will not only hunt you, but will not stop until you are dead dead.

I was taught to fall face first into the ground, and cover my neck with my arms and try to play dead.

Yes actually this happened out in the Black Hills to my father. A bear attacked his camp site and he climbed up a tree and it climbed up after him. The park ranger showed up in time and shot it I think.
The bear ran off
I have heard that you can never turn your back to a bear, so if you want to fall back you just walk backwards ... very slowly, this advice has come from an experienced hunter

And when you get put in jail, you get to worry about a different type of bear.
