A New York City judge has invalidated a company's patents on two genes linked to an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
The ruling Monday by federal Judge Robert Sweet challenging whether anyone can hold patents on human genes was expected to have broad implications for the biotechnology industry and genetics-based medical research.
Last March, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Public Patent Foundation sued Myriad Genetics Inc., the University of Utah Research Foundation and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The ACLU and the patent foundation said Myriad's refusal to license the patents broadly has meant that women who fear they may be at risk of breast or ovarian cancers are prevented from having anyone but Myriad look at the genes in question.

This is why big corporations blow. No one should be able to patent part of the human genome.
Excuse me sir, you owe me a nickel.
What the fuck? Why?
Because you've stolen my cancer.
I don't feel save having my body parts copyrighted and trademarked.
How can someone patent a part of every person on earth?
Pay someone money to be born?
If that had come true, does that mean babies would be the result of piracy?

Soon we'd have baby DRM. If your internet connection goes out your baby dies
At first I thought this would be actual biotechnology relating to said genes, and that would make sense to have patents on.
This, however, is absolutely retarded beyond all belief.
Ive already copyrighted heart...
Everyone pay up... Now

Maybe we'd have to block Baby ads as well, to avoid getting viruses. :woop:
Bioshock much?
This is awesome. No longer can they charge for exclusive medications to cure certain diseases.

You're just ignorant of transgendered people.
Reminds me of Next, written by Michael Critchon.

Men still get it sometimes.
Good news this, they were enormous arseholes for trying to pretty much monopolise cancer research.
My body parts belong to me, sorry Myriad.
Woah, well that was one week late for me. I just paid Myriad $440 for my genetic test.
Now all they have to do is stop this from taking place in other species and we'll be set.
Seriously, Monsanto has gene patents on many things, including the gene that makes soybeans resistant to their weed spray, RoundUp. Once they got the patent for it, they became the sole proprietor of plants with that gene, meaning that they gained the ability to rent plants with those genes, and if you are caught with plants that have those genes without paying your fee for that year, you can be sued. As such, the practice of replanting the last years seeds is dead, forcing soybean farmers to pay for new seeds every year. You also can't assume that your plants don't have this gene if you've never bought seeds from Monsanto, because 95% of soybean plants do. If you don't pay Monsanto every year, you will be sued and you will lose.
Thanks to this case, there is precedent that says this is illegal. Now all we have to do is take Monsanto to court under a class-action lawsuit. I love you, common law.
Monsanto is an evil company.
