Full article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...Z0HN_blog.html
A federal court judge ruled that officials at a California high school had a legal right to send home students wearing shirts showing the American flag on Cinco de Mayo because there was a reasonable fear that the images could lead to violence

Chief U.S. District Judge James Ware... cited past clashes between Mexican-American and Anglo students over clothing on the holiday, which is a celebration of Mexican heritage and in Mexico commemorates a Mexican army victory over the French in 1862

Ware also rejected the students’ claim of discrimination. The judge wrote that while the students wearing the shirts with American flags had told a school official that they knew they might be in danger but wanted to keep the shirts on anyway, there was no evidence that youths who wore clothing with Mexican flag colors were in danger. “All students whose safety was in jeopardy were treated equally,” the judge wrote. This is going to do wonders for Latino-White relations in those schools.
This will do wonders for the Latino-White relations in that school. Edit: Crap this article was released in 2011... Why the hell did I just hear about this on the morning news today?
Let's face it, America, you need smarter people in charge of the educational system. Knee-jerk reactions on this sort of outside issue (reasonable my foot) aren't going to help.
Wow, a ruling so politically correct that it's offensive
What about shirts with the French flag?
What about shirts with the French flag?
Vive la Revolution
Schools should have uniforms. Boom, not an issue
It'd be absolutely glorious if *every* white student wore the stars and stripes as proudly as they possibly can that day just to piss off the school administration.
Yeah I have no idea what kind of logic these morons are operating on. Pretty sure this ban will paint a big fucking target on anyone wearing a Mexican shirt at this school now.
I think the worst thing happening here is a federal judge giving an official ruling based on school aged drama queen behavior. It can only get worse because of that.
I'd just come in with an American Flag t-shirt to get a day off. Gaming the system, whoop.
I'd just come in with an American Flag t-shirt to get a day off. Gaming the system, whoop.
i'd wear it just to say fuck you to the school - and the 200 students
Yeah I have no idea what kind of logic these morons are operating on. Pretty sure this ban will paint a big fucking target on anyone wearing a Mexican shirt at this school now.
I'm almost certain that a massive percentage of the students have a Mexican background. Firstly, 200 students (1300 total students at the school) walked out and "protested" about how the American flag was disrespectful. Secondly, ~35% of the city that the school is located in marked Hispanic/Latino in the Census.
We should wear mandatory orange suits just like prisoners, to prepare us for the road the education system takes us.
Orange is a safe color. I support this.
We should wear mandatory orange suits just like prisoners, to prepare us for the road the education system takes us.
fuck, this is the best job preparation ever, renegade, and it has to deal with clothing!
I'd show up with an Irish flag or something.
We should wear mandatory orange suits just like prisoners, to prepare us for the road the education system takes us.
I don't really understand what you're getting at, most jobs require a uniform of some kind.

There was literally a case in America where it was ruled that you can't ban clothing, to a degree (schools commonly restrict shirts that promote drugs/violence/et cetera). How can they legally do this?
I'd show up with an Irish flag or something.
colour your eyebrows belgian flags or some shit and hang little union jacks off of your hat
How is the flag of their (assumedly) own nation disrespectful?
I like how this implies that the officials believe that those of Mexican heritage are supposedly stark raving mad assholes who go flying off the handle at the site of an American flag. How's that for racism?
Show up with the Liberia flag
How can they legally do this?
"For the children" and "safety"
I don't really understand what you're getting at, most jobs require a uniform of some kind.
the joke was that the school system is so inadequate that it's just setting us up for failure, producing more and more lower class citizens and by proxy creating more delinquents for the prison system to profit from
imagine a world where educated decisions are made in an education system
Do they ban British flags on Independence Day as well People celebrate Mexican victory over France = Ban American flag I'm not seeing the logic
I like how this implies that the officials believe that those of Mexican heritage are supposedly stark raving mad assholes who go flying off the handle at the site of an American flag. How's that for racism?
Mexican heritage or otherwise, they're all AMERICANS, which makes it all the more weird
I don't really understand what you're getting at, most jobs require a uniform of some kind.
Most jobs certainly do not require a uniform, unless you count a dress code as a uniform.
Out of everything the people protested, it has to do with shirts. No, not even about the rules, just shirts on a holiday.... Education at work. And to double that, the school actually listened.
Do they ban British flags on Independence Day as well People celebrate Mexican victory over France = Ban American flag I'm not seeing the logic Mexican heritage or otherwise, they're all AMERICANS, which makes it all the more weird
I'd assume it was done because there was a noticeable problem with racist idiots being edgy by saying "this is America, we ain't celebratin' no spanish national holidays round HERE" though from the sound of the article, latino students weren't "in danger" whereas US flagbearers were [allegedly]. Could it be some people are just taking the US flag statements as being extremist anti-mexicanism?
It really hurts to know that my taxes are going to distribute my hard-earned cash to this system someday soon.
It really hurts to know that my taxes are going to distribute my hard-earned cash to this system someday soon.
we need more money going to the educational system so we can hire smarter people to work it
