Philippines version of Donald Trump, Duterte, who said he'll kill anyone into drugs, wins presidentia
MANILA, PHILIPPINES—A foul-mouthed, crime-busting mayor is the man to beat in Monday’s presidential election in the Philippines as voters weary of poverty, corruption and insurgencies in the hinterlands look for a radical change at the top.
Rodrigo Duterte, the mayor of the southern Davao city, has led in voter-preference surveys, with a bold promise to wipe out crime and corruption in three to six months if he wins. That has resonated among voters but also sparked alarm and doubts about electing someone with no national political experience and a tendency to make inflammatory remarks.
“All of you who are into drugs, you sons of bitches, I will really kill you,” Duterte told a huge cheering crowd Saturday in his final campaign rally in Manila. “I have no patience, I have no middle ground, either you kill me or I will kill you idiots.”
It is remarks such as these that have won him favour among the masses, and opprobrium among the political elite. Outgoing President Benigno Aquino III called Duterte a threat to democracy, as he campaigned for his candidate, former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.
Three other candidates are vying to succeed Aquino in one of Asia’s liveliest democracies. Besides, more than 45,000 candidates are contesting 18,000 national, congressional and local positions in elections that have traditionally been tainted by violence and accusations of cheating, especially in far-flung rural areas.
On the campaign trail, Duterte offered radical promises, including his bold anti-crime pledge and a plan to sail to China’s new artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea and plant the Philippine flag there. The other candidates stuck to less audacious reforms.
Duterte’s opponents — Roxas, Sen. Grace Poe, Vice-President Jejomar Binay and Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago — have all criticized him for remarks that threaten the rule of law and the Philippines’ hard-won democracy.
“Duterte is completely out of the system, he’s out of the box,” said political science Prof. Richard Heydarian of De La Salle University in Manila, adding that in the mayor’s portrayal of social problems, “there is a gap between the rhetoric and reality but it’s working, it’s creating panic among a lot of people and rallying them behind Duterte.”
Duterte, a 71-year-old lawyer and former government prosecutor, built a political name with his iron-fist approach to fighting crime in Davao city, where he has served as mayor for 22 years. During the campaigning he joked about his sexual prowess and joked about wanting to be the one to first rape an Australian missionary who was sexually abused and killed by inmates in a 1989 prison riot.

Says the retard that doesn't see the benefits of decriminalization.

He's really tempting fate there.

Oh I can see your international relations going well :v:
Uh, title is wrong? He hasn't won the election yet?
Worst part is, he's already won. The partial results are already out and he's over 6 million votes ahead of the next candidate.
Fuck this country. The next 6 years will be interesting to say the least.

Go right ahead, it's your loss

Considering both have a military presence there and are both major trading partners this can only end well...
Are we going to see an era of leaders making bold statements?
"Build a wall and make mexico pay for it!"
"Kill me or be killed, idiots"
What's next?
"Let's evactuate syria and nuke it - rinse and scrub."
I spoke to a Filipino man just the other day about this and he was telling me about how the people over there are so tired of government corruption and open criminal activity that they'll jump at anyone who has proven themselves as someone who will fight against it. Based on what this guy told me, the guy in the OP was already the mayor of the one of the largest cities in the Philippines and really did a lot to clean it up. People are hoping he'll do the same for the whole country.

90+% of the votes have already been counted and he's leading with a large margin so he already has secured the victory.

This election really has been crazy. Even the vice president voting is eerie to see, with the son of our former dictator being the front-runner until a few hours earlier when his rival caught up with the rest of the votes from other regions, who is a woman with a slightly similar situation to the woman that spearheaded the revolution that toppled the same dictator. (Their husbands died a few years earlier, both on an airplane with one an assassination at the airport and another at a plane crash.)
On another note, the guy far behind the polls Roy Señeres, died in February this year. Due to complications on filing his papers for withdrawing the election, and died of cardiac arrest before he could get behind it.

This is what's going on pretty much.
Honestly he's not as bad as trump. He says some pretty stupid things, but his actions go the other way.
For instance, he made a really stupid remark, making light of a rape incident which I believe was mentioned in the OP, but he's actually done a loooooooooooot for women's rights.
He also supports the LGBT community.
He's not openly racist either. Guy's pretty sincere about his good intentions.

I don't think this is a guy who would murder people over nothing
I think the entire Duterte = Trump thing is really overblown and far from the truth. Although there is a way better candidate than him (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miriam_Defensor_Santiago) that the general population pretty much ignored due to her affliction(cancer).
The Philippines is divided into three major islands: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Luzon is the mainland pretty much where all the oligarchs reside.
Visayas is pretty so-so, though I won't claim to know much about it aside from the fact that it's doing pretty well.
Mindanao is the shithole(where I live) beset by problems such as daily blackouts, shitty infrastructure, and insurgents in the remote islands. All the government's attention pretty much goes to Luzon. One of the reasons why this guy has a lot of supporters is that he hails from a city in Mindanao, which means that he's actually aware of the problems around the country as opposed to the stuck up oligarchs who won't give a shit if someone nuked this region, so the natives over here are pretty much all for him. He won't magically solve the problem, but it also means that the area will no longer be treated like it doesn't exist.
I say this as someone who lived 40% of his life in Luzon and the other 40% in Mindanao (the rest is in america as a kid)
People are hoping he'll do the same for the whole country.
But at what cost?
I spoke to a Filipino man just the other day about this and he was telling me about how the people over there are so tired of government corruption and open criminal activity that they'll jump at anyone who has proven themselves as someone who will fight against it. This is pretty much what my family talks about every day.
But at what cost?
I personally don't know much about the whole situation beyond what the Filipino guy I spoke to told me.
One thing I do know is that it's all but impossible to improve anything about a country if the government is extremely corrupt. So it might very well be worth it if he can actually help fix that aspect.
Duterte is completely out of the system, he’s out of the box.
Oh, I'll say he's completely out of it.
Out of his mind that is.
The Philippines is a fucking wacky place. From what I understand from reading and watching videos related to it's politics, the people have stopped giving a fuck about the government and openly kill officials in the street. What's worse is that their drug and gun industries have somewhat legitimized themselves into Filipino society and the government was incapable of fighting them, thanks in part, to the corruption behind the scenes.

it hasn't reached this point yet it's not that bad lol

but this is pretty much true
take note however that the drug and gun industry in the philippines is way way different from what it is in america
Says the retard that doesn't see the benefits of decriminalization.
the drug trade here is so fucked up that decriminalization won't fix anything and will just make it worse. it's not like in america or smth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_drug_trade_in_the_Philippines
Yeah, you guys have the crazy bastards who make firearms in their backyards, and are capable of selling them in open markets these days. Also, I thought it was that bad already. Tons of news reporters stateside talk about how you guys have a problem with PMCs being hired by politicians to protect them from assassinations.
At least he's held a public office before.
At least he's held a public office before.
he's pretty wacky but he did a damn good job at it
i'm not really 100% for him as I prefer defensor, who's way more qualified than him, but among him and the rest of the candidates, he stands as the lesser evil

Hey mind if I borrow that for my presidential run
I know both my parents were supporters for him in the Philippines (Sanders supporters in the US), I haven't been following the election much but it's going to be interesting to see what my family in the PH thinks of him when I go visit the country in a month.
Either or, congrats that DU31
But at what cost?
You have to understand how Asian society, especially South East Asia works. It may had been China’s influence, but most Asians would rather have safety and economic stability over freedom. Being able to have a rice bowl at the expense of free speech is seen as the better alternative
I wonder how long till he speaks to Aus or US to try and apologise for some of his statements once they threaten forcing all of their respective investments to leave (aka capital flight)... this guys inflammatory rhetoric is that bad I wouldn't be surprised he might so as to actually cause an escalation of war (especially that the chinese military land reclamation projects on the Spratlys is nearly complete)

I say the next is near. People are tired and unpatient of waiting horrible things that happened in the past or right now disappear. Id say killing a thousand would pay off for another hundred thousands future being clean. They dont respect your life, why should you?
[editline]10th May 2016[/editline]
I mean the people in philippines have the right mindset: why not act now and right now? Is it worth waiting for the officials to deal with the drug economy on law? Each day passes it gets worse, and worse.
“All of you who are into drugs, you sons of bitches, I will really kill you,”
Jesus did he have a bad experience with a drug user or something?
