Princess Jasmine, the female protagonist in Disney’s 1992 animated movie “Aladdin,” is getting a wardrobe change with a more modest costume, reported entertainment-news site Hello Giggles on Tuesday.
Gone is the midriff-baring two-piece outfit the Arabian princess wears in the cartoon feature. The new costume to be worn by actresses portraying the character is long-sleeved, with a neckline that rests at the collarbone.
“Disney has slowly been rolling out brand new costumes for all the princesses in the park, and Jasmine’s one of the last to get a new look,” Hello Giggles said. “While obviously an updated wardrobe is never a bad thing, according to those in the Disney Princess know, one of the main reasons for this change is that many were complaining about Jasmine showing her stomach — which is totally understandable, especially taking young body-conscious girls into consideration.”
The Jasmine character in particular has been under fire from feminists as well as Muslim critics in recent years as an offensive role model unworthy of showcasing to impressionable young girls.
“The majority of Princess Jasmine’s numerous flaws stem from the fact that she is completely inaccurate and offensive to her culture. From the clothes she wears to the way she speaks, Jasmine does not represent Arab or Muslim women at all but rather a disgraceful woman in their culture. Unfortunately, Jasmine is not a suitable role model for young girls,” complained a woman writing at FanPop.com last year.
“Had Jasmine been portrayed more accurately, she would’ve been far more like Cinderella, Ariel or Belle. She would’ve been braver, kinder and more modest. She would’ve had more grace and poise the way a princess should. The most accurate Jasmine was portrayed in Aladdin was in her purple royal engagement announcement dress. That is the Jasmine who should be sold to the little girls. Not the spoiled, impulsive, shrew-like tease version of her.”
If Jasmine had been portrayed more accurately she would be in a Burka and whipped for showing so much skin with a man around her at all times making sure she doesn't do anything haram.
I don't see why they are changing classic Disney princesses considering they should look as accurately to the movies as possible. This seems like a move to not offend modern Feminists or Muslims.

help me obi wan kenobi, you're my only hope
I'm very confused. Feminists are for sexual liberation. This is not exactly sexual liberation.
Also lol @ the reason being her showing her stomach, yeahhhhhhhhh, right.
..I like it, honestly.
It honestly resembles pre-Islamic Era Arab clothing much more than her original design. I'm into it.
..I like it, honestly.
It's not terrible, but it feels like she should look how she does in the movie.
Not that it matters very much, though. She's still recognizable, which is the most important part.
Honestly I think I'll still be able to sleep at night if she puts a top on.

I know you're making a joke, but you realise that the dress code for women in Islamic countries hasn't always been strictly enforced and there's no country where you're legally mandated to wear a burqa, right?
they should do a george lucas special edition of aladdin and digitally remove her midriff

I guess not all feminists agree or something?
I don't know, I find the new costume makes her look a lot like "generic cartoon princess" now. Jasmine had a really unique look as far as Disney princesses go. Don't ruin it.
My only thing is that the characters should look identical to their film counterpart, but as long as they are recognizable, it's no big deal. To be fair though, Disney princesses have been pretty sexualized and since they're may girls' first big fictional representation that they grow up idolizing, I can see why Disney has been trying to make their characters both more modest and a bit more time period accurate.
And no, Jasmin wouldn't be wearing a burqa, the time period of Aladdin is far from today and Islamic nations were far more liberal in the past. Of all of the princesses that had outfit changes, many of which similarly major, Jasmin's is the only one getting media attention because everyone is gonna jump on the "modesty because of Islam, next they'll make her wear a hijab." It's nice and sensational.
A moment of silence for the actresses whose jobs in Florida/SoCal have now gotten 75% more sweltering.
This was such a problem before. Totally needed.
I quite like it, actually. It's simply a silk dress.
In the movie, Jasmine is pretty strong-willed. It's not like they're changing her personality or anything. Just a wardrobe change.
Also, "offending Muslims"? Almost every single Muslim I've met has loved Aladdin, even the second one, because it's an Iraq-based movie. The bedlah is also traditional, yes, but it's rather dated. Those critics must be hard-asses.

I want off this ride

Probably because to them it's not an issue of sexual liberation, it's an issue of general character writing and portrayal. And they'd be right to say that Jasmine is not some bastion of female characterization or whatever.
But its a silly argument to make (not all characters should be do-no-wrong facades/retroactive outrage over old media is stupid). And the last quote of the OP saying how to make her "more accurate" must either be a bad joke or that person is the world record holder for loudest mouthbreathing.
isnt she a belly dancer, or at least supposed to resemble one

feminists revel in being contradictory, Its an unfortunate circumstance of trying to be everything

"feminism is actually pro liberal (whatever is in vogue), so unless you support raping babies you're a feminist, stop standing up for your own beliefs, we've got it covered!"
SO glad this mentality has died down though, not a fan of what it's being replaced with, though.

My only real issue is this. That she doesn't look like the movie Disney land is supposed to be portraying. If they had a new Aladdin movie and she wore that costume I wouldn't mind. The reason behind the change is also really silly and doesn't seem to make much sense.
[editline]10th September 2016[/editline]
Also I wonder if we will get a new costume for Princess Trainer thanks to this.
I think they might have done the change because the actors are for young kids and not adults.
They should've at least kept the curly shoes. The bastards.

the kids don't care
only the adults would
also curly shoes or bust
isnt she a belly dancer, or at least supposed to resemble one
Not at all, she's supposed to resemble what a young Arabian princess would wear if she were to live in the scalding hot sun-raped middle eastern desert in a time of no air conditioning or running water.
Wasn't there some theory that was later confirmed that Aladdin actually takes place in a post apocalyptic world?

Not true, actually. If it was really historically accurate, she'd be wearing a very loose, shapeless linen dress, like the new one. Leaving body parts exposed would result in very bad skin damage, and it's the reason why traditional dress for men is fully-clothed.
Bedlah is just for belly-dancing. It's a costume.
Wasn't there some theory that was later confirmed that Aladdin actually takes place in a post apocalyptic world?
Theory, yes.
Confirmed, not so much.
I don't remember people complaining about how she looked in the 90's, why change it now? Is the old costume going to fuck up little kids because they're not covered head to toe in clothing, and somehow seeing a belly button is as sinful as an Amish woman showing her calves?
What's wrong with showing skin? It's not even sexualized unless you project your own views onto it and there's nothing wrong with women feeling comfortable enough with their bodies to show them off. Claims of "it might hurt people's self image" are dumb because people will see skinny skin-showing women everywhere if they bother to go to a beach or pool, plus sheltering kids from images of other people who look different than them is just going to make anxiety about their appearance worse.
This is just unnecessary, and does nothing positive unless you're a prude who hates seeing skin. Nobody was harmed with the former costume, and if anything the only change this new costume is going to have is make the women working at Disneyland have an even more miserable time when they have to wear the costume, it's not like a Goofy mascot costume with built in air conditioning. It's a zero sum change but it's giving the impression that women showing skin is wrong and that's counter-intuitive to making young girls feel empowered.
eh it doesnt bother me too much , but i would definitely have a hard time figuring out which princess that was if i walked past her in disneyland compared to the original costume.
It's whatever. I've never been to Disney Land or World anyways and now I'm too old to. I'm just curious as to what the kids will think. Did this bother them or the people with brightly colored hair asking people to watch their pronouns?
