• Three unpublished J.D. Salinger stories wind up on What.cd, internet distracted by torrent bounty
Three unpublished works by J.D, Salinger, including The Ocean Full of Bowling Balls, have been leaked online after showing up in an eBay auction. Birthday Boy, Paula, and the aforementioned Ocean are three short stories that form part of a larger collection of Salinger works that was never published. The trio of stories was uploaded in a PDF file that appears to have been scanned from an unauthorized book simply titled Three Stories, before the leak was detailed on Reddit. Although the book has a barcode and ISBN, the code leads nowhere. Although the origin of the three stories is unclear, the book first surfaced in a British eBay listing. Sold by an eBay member from Brentford in London, the book sold for just £67.50 (roughly $110) at auction. Whoever bought it then proceeded to scan and upload its contents to the members-only torrent site what.CD. The importance of this leak can't be overstated; Salinger was a notoriously private man, and although his family will release some of his unpublished works starting in 2015, it's thought that the stories leaked today did not figure in the Salinger estate's plans. Instead, they were scheduled to be published no earlier than 2061, in respect of Salinger's will, which ordered they remain hidden away until 50 years after his death.
http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/28/5154324/jd-salinger-the-ocean-full-of-bowling-balls-pdf-leak Surprised there wasn't a thread on this. I guess it was about time there was a major ebook leak. Still I feel a bit uncomfortable with reading the collection, seems a bit too disrespectful to the creator rights. But on the other hand, one of the stories is a Catcher in the Rye prequel thing, and I think it would be a really interesting insight to see Holden's world outside of his eyes.
Salinger is an amazing writer.
I thought there was only one copy of this?
Salinger is an amazing writer.
The Catcher in the Rye is arguably his only enjoyable novel to read.
The Catcher in the Rye is arguably his only enjoyable novel to read.
Franny and Zooey is pretty good
Franny and Zooey is pretty good
Some would argue that it's better.
The Catcher in the Rye is arguably his only enjoyable novel to read.
catcher is overrated drivel more famous for the phony controversy it stirred among half wit conservatives than literary content [editline]29th November 2013[/editline] it's a pretentious and masturbatory exercise in shallow symbolism and disregard for stylistic conventions masked (rather cheaply) as "stream of conciousness"
i hope these are better than catcher in the rye literally the worst book ive ever read (fuck holden caulfield)

I could not stand catcher in the rye. Combination of forced highschool reading and I guess just general lack of grasping at what the book was trying to accomplish hopefully, as I always heard great things about it. It just felt like a story about a dude who would not shut up in a city that he did not enjoy, with a family who I guess didn't understand him. I mean he starts out with this "fuck the police" attitude after IIRC being told to go to college or something, goes on this adventure around town where he gets his shit handed to him repeatedly, and then he finally goes home, takes money from his younger sister, and I think finally decides to go to college. And he never found those ducks either. Please tell me I missed the point here, what was the point of this book?

As Golden Gnome said,
shallow symbolism
is littered through the book that points to Holden being misplaced and opposite of societal norms. He even say's he's "the biggest liar anyone's ever seen." Holden is a compassionate, depressed kid who can't conform to society, which wants him to be tougher than he actually is. His brother dying, his sister and friends growing up; those ducks in the pond, not having anywhere to go or the girl he calls for some compassion, he cares for all of them. He so absorbed in everyone else that he can't help himself. The end of the novel is him being committed: isolated from a society that he doesn't belong. [editline]29th November 2013[/editline] Growing up is seen as significantly a negative thing as well. The title is the extended metaphor of the novel. He catches the children from falling out of that field of rye. Most of the adults in the novel give little care to Holden, or are generally antagonists. The one who sees the most potential in him, even after failing him, is sickly in bed. Holden's longing for innocence that he has lost due to Allie dying, and the inability for anyone to understand or to compassionately comfort him in a time of shear dread. Isn't what.CD that pretentious music site though? What would they be doing with literature? [editline]29th November 2013[/editline] I never really wanted to get in but I must admit I kind of want to now.

[editline]29th November 2013[/editline] I never really wanted to get in but I must admit I kind of want to now.
They have a ebooks and software as well, as both can easily be associated with music through education, and music tuning software. It's comprehensively a music website with a tight niche group of people who, supposedly, care for quality of all music. I don't know how you get pretentious, but it seems erroneous. [editline]29th November 2013[/editline] If you remember Microsoft COFEE, that was also famously leaked there.
Well if they also have a library of rare books that can only be downloaded from there then that changes the ballgame, doesn't it?
If you want to download it from there then go through the interview process to get an invite, it's not that hard. It's what weeds out the plebians from thepiratebay and all of the other retard cesspits that are public trackers from joining.
I like how even though it's only obliquely related, everyone has to share their opinion of the catcher in the rye.
catcher is overrated drivel more famous for the phony controversy it stirred among half wit conservatives than literary content [editline]29th November 2013[/editline] it's a pretentious and masturbatory exercise in shallow symbolism and disregard for stylistic conventions masked (rather cheaply) as "stream of conciousness"
you sound like holden caulfield
you sound like holden caulfield
No, GoldenGnome, you are the Holdens. And then GoldenGnome was a phony.
I like how even though it's only obliquely related, everyone has to share their opinion of the catcher in the rye.
'Ocean Full of Bowling Balls' is a prequel-esque work to "Catcher in the Rye.' The significance of this leak in this term is then justified by how substantial 'Catcher' is to people, so I would say it's perfectly related to the article.
sorry i wrote that post at the end of a 1 am black friday shift, i was in the mood to unjustly criticize something. catcher was aight
you sound like holdin coalfield
ftfy
listening to catcher in the rye in audiobook form is so good... much more hilarious with a nice charismatic reader.
As many of you are aware, a leak of J.D. Salinger’s heretofore unpublished “Three Stories” found its way to What.CD in the last day. It is our current belief that this leak originated as a physical copy on eBay and made its way to our site in digital form thereafter, although we cannot confirm this lineage at present. The official request for these stories has existed on What.CD for some time, and although many thought it would never be filled or otherwise viewed it as a harmless act of communal wishing, the request’s existence was in no way a formal endorsement by What.CD Staff. The site was temporarily brought down so that we could work to preemptively resolve issues related to the leaked content and the publicity it has received. Our first priority can and must be the protection of What.CD. Due to this case’s rare and unlikely circumstances, due to the unnecessary and unwanted attention the Salinger leak has brought, and due to our desire to comply with the desires of the Salinger estate or other involved parties in this matter, the content has been removed from What.CD. It is not to be re-uploaded under any circumstances, and anyone found doing so will have their account disabled. We thank you for your patience as we continue to resolve this matter. Additional details will become available as is necessary per the discretion of the Staff.
They bottled it.
They bottled it.
Can't blame them. It was bringing a lot of heat down on them. This thread alone is example of that.
This is kind of like when Microsoft's COFEE leaked on What.cd.
They bottled it.
I wonder if the Imgur mirror got removed also.
