• Dutch artist finds WWII photos at flea market, matches them with photos of modern locations
This haunting collection of images shows what it would look like if the ghosts of World War II returned to our streets. The remarkable pictures overlay modern scenes from France with atmospheric photographs taken in the same place during the war. Historical expert Jo Teeuwisse, from Amsterdam, began the project after finding 300 old negatives at a flea market in her home city depicting familiar places in a very different context. She researched the background to each of the most interesting finds and created a beautiful series of pictures by super-imposing the old pictures on top of new ones. Now she has rediscovered photographs of soldiers at war in France and across Europe and put together further sets of evocative and emotional designs. Miss Teeuwisse believes that making war scenes familiar by linking them to somewhere we recognise heightens their impact. 'I knew what happened there, but knowing the exact spot of some detail will etch it into your visual memory,' she said. Her work goes much further than the visual, too. The website of her organisation, Historical Consultancy, reads: 'For years we have been researching daily life before and during the Second World war, not just gathering information but also interviewing eye witnesses and recreating certain aspects of history to gain a unique insight into that era.' The organisation works with authors, film and TV companies, museums, schools, documentary makers, designers, theatre productions and many more. It has helped individuals trying to find out more about their family history, carrying out close research into any events from between 1900 and 1950. shit like this is why i love history, just the knowledge of some one else having been in the same street you are on with something amazing happening to them.
Cool as FUCK
Am I the only one that's been seeing these a lot for years? I used to get them all the time using StumbleUpon, and I just assumed that everybody had seen stuff like this. It's absolutely fascinating.
That's too cool.
This is pretty cool Though I felt like the editing could have been way better, especially since for most of the photographs the only things from the older photos that were superimposed on the new ones were the people instead of the enviornment, which makes it look like the artist could have just taken any old picture from WWII that had people in them, and then just pasted the people into the new ones. Versus it looking like these WWII photos are actually taking place in the exact places where the modern photos were taken. The ghost effect is cool and all, but what could have been an awesome 1:1 enviornmental transition from WWII photos to modern day photos just ended up being modern day photos with WWII people superimposed on them. I don't really get a sense that the old photographs were at the exact same place in a lot of them. Not saying this is dumb or bad or anything though. It's still really cool.

Awesome. Love work like this. :v:
I think the work of Sergey Larenkov is great. it is sad to know that just about everyone back then has by now died in one way or another, besides a few.
it is sad to know that just about everyone back then has by now died in one way or another, besides a few.
Think of it, you are watching these pictures and your grandpa comes behind you and says, Hey, look, that's me!
Thats great, I wonder how long it took him to find those specific locations.
it is sad to know that just about everyone back then has by now died in one way or another, besides a few.
Yea, I agree a lot of people in my family fought in WWII but they all died before or after I was born. Kind of sad

Is there any of these pictures that aren't merged? I'd like to see both individually
Is there any of these pictures that aren't merged? I'd like to see both individually
Go to the source of the OP article, it's a flickr stream with both of them separate and merged.
