A Bristol County Grand Jury issued an indictment charging Michelle Carter with involuntary manslaughter. The indictment was based on the following facts.
In 2012, Conrad Roy met Carter, and at some point, apparently, they formed an online romantic relationship, which primarily occurred through online and cell phone communication. The relationship was discreet: Conrad's best friend, Tom Gammel, was unaware of it.
From at least July 6 to July 12, 2014, Carter assisted Conrad's suicide by counseling him to overcome his doubts, devising a plan to run a combustion engine within his truck in order to poison him with carbon monoxide, and by directing him to go back in his truck after he exited it, when he became frightened that the plan was working.
She convinced him that his suicide would not afflict his parents with emotional distress:
CARTER: I think your parents know you're in a really bad place. I'm not saying they want you to do it but I honestly feel like they can accept it.
They know there is nothing they can do. They've tried helping. Everyone's tried, but there is a point that comes where there isn't anything anyone can do to save you, not even yourself.
And you've hit that point and I think your parents know you've hit that point. You said your mom saw a suicide thing on your computer and she didn't say anything. I think she knows it's on your mind and she's prepared for it.
Everyone will be sad for a while but they will get over it and move on. They won't be in depression. I won't let that happen. They know how sad you are, and they know that you are doing this to be happy and I think they will understand and accept it.
They will always carry you in their hearts.
More texts in the article. Makes me fucking sick.
I live in the area; many of my friends know her. Apparently she was really nice, but this was fucked.
The texts after he backed out of it are fucking nauseating. The fact that she's getting charged with involuntary manslaughter baffles me.
I can't believe someone actually said this in the comments on that article
Well honestly. What is more "disgusting" is that no one TRIED to help him out of it. if you read the texts the kid clearly cant think for himself. His GF had to constantly remind him (patiently too i might add so props to her) of why he was doing it. She was the only one that actually seemed to be there for him. He had "tried" everything and nothing was working. In his mindset (being young) though it wasnt working because he either didnt want to get better, or thought that there was nothing to fix his depression. Going back to her being so patient with him. I actually think she really did love him. Because she had with him through all this. When ur that age you tell everything to ur bf or gf. And they dont always know everything. So the whole time she honestly believed this was the only way for him to be happy and not in pain. She never lost patience with him, and constantly told him she loved him. I believe this to be true because she WARNED him if he didnt pull through with his "plan to finally be happy" then she would GET HIM HELP because he cant keep doing this to himself everyday. Meaning wallowing around in his own self pity and pain. Yeah this was definitely the WRONG way to go about handling Depression but she honestly thought this was the best thing for him because she loved him and didnt know what else to do for the guy since he HONESTLY thought he couldnt get better.
what the fuck

Should be charged with voluntarily manslaughter...

How the hell can this not be voluntary manslaughter?

Check out Part 2. Seems like she set it up to have her own pity party via Munchausen by Proxy.
Court documents stated that Carter sought attention for Roy’s death.
In the days following Conrad's death, Carter sought sympathy and attention. On July 18, she attended Conrad's wake. Shortly after, she published Facebook posts about Conrad and created a Facebook event page for a fundraising baseball tournament that she organized in Conrad's memory. It read:
CARTER’S FACEBOOK POST: Hey everyone, as some of you already know my boyfriend Conrad Roy recently passed away on July 13. He suffered from mental illness and depression. Conrad's death was a wake-up call for me. I want to speak out to fight the public stigma and to give a clearer picture of what mental illness is all about. Even though I could not save my boyfriend's life, I want to put myself out there to try to save as many other lives as possible, and if I can through my experiences shed light on a way out of a difficult situation that I know so many people are going through, then that is what I need to do.
There's being troubled then there's just being a cold blooded sociopath, this is starting to sound like the latter
Can we give her some therapy?

Textbook psychopath.

holy fuck that's absolutely horrifying
The boy is just so afraid and confused in those texts, so much hesitation. At this point it's undeniable that she was manipulating him.

That statement is all too common.

what the fuck
Because people don't care that this guy killed himself. He will just become another stat.
Fuck this psycho bitch. Hurting someone to get attention is one (really bad) thing, but actually making it so someone dies so you get attention? What the fuck?
There's being troubled then there's just being a cold blooded sociopath, this is starting to sound like the latter
You should apply that filter more often.
Makes me wonder what her parents were like to have raised such a disgusting individual.
Reading that made me feel physically ill. And then to go and act as if she was some kind of victim...fucking disgraceful human being.
Wow those texts are fucking sickening. How can you say you love someone while at the same time encouraging them to commit suicide?
You just have to read a couple of these texts to see she has absolutely no emotion. As evil and sick as psychopaths come, really. The way she manipulated this kid just pays testament to the idea that her sentence is crap. I'd call this murder if I were the judge.
Makes me wonder what her parents were like to have raised such a disgusting individual.
She is very clearly mentally ill, I doubt her parents had anything to do with it
Death is never the answer when it comes to depression. That's how I always fought my depression. Push forward. This young woman is clearly apathetic and callous to the the young man's situation, to the point that she may have planned for his suicide to make her some kind of symbol for mental help and depression.
She needs some serious psychiatric evaluation.
I think this little snippet illustrates how fucked up this is best:
CARTER: You're fine. It's gonna be okay. You just gotta do it, babe. You can't think about it.
CONRAD: Okay. Okay. I got this.
CARTER: Yes, you do. I believe in you. Did you delete the messages?
CONRAD: Yes. But you're going to keep messaging me.
CARTER: I will until you turn on the generator.
CONRAD: Okay. Well, I'm bringing my sisters for ice cream.
CARTER: So will you do it when you get back?

CONRAD: Okay. Well, I'm bringing my sisters for ice cream.
This part makes me cry a little on the inside. His sisters had no idea that would be the last time.
Fuck this manipulative bitch.
Reading that made my stomach turn. I'm fucking appalled.
Driving people to suicide? That's a perfectly normal thing to do in this society. And so is exploiting others.
At this point I just wonder why won't we just nuke the planet. If we can't save ourselves, then why bother with it all?
Edgy? Sure, it is, but I say it how I see it.
Majority of people see mental suffering as something to take advantage of, something to ridicule, something to be entertained by. That's what I've seen with my very eyes ever since I remember, that's what I've felt with my very heart ever since I remember, that's what I've heard with my very ears ever since I remember. And I know that I'm not the only one, I've talked to people who agree with me.
This is humanity, and it is a pile of sludge.
That's an unusual definition of the word "friend" in the thread title there.

Problem is though, for some people it might be the only way out of a situation they feel, no, know, has no way out, or that they're not even aware there might be a way out at all. Truth be told, in many of the cases people attempt suicide they're simply fed up of continuing to live in an existence they feel has failed them in every possible way. At that point, death would indeed be preferable for them, societal expectations be damned, and so they resort to suicide as a way out.
I've myself experienced a case of serious depression at one point where I thought I might never get into med school at all. I was younger and more foolish at the time, admittedly, and didn't know there were alternate means of getting in other than via high school grades, and didnt notice myself getting sicker and sicker until I collapsed one day, and ended in hospital, and was told that I'd come down with severe systemic tuberculosis. The docs who treated me told me there were other ways to get in, and chided me for letting such a small thing cause me so much in the way of trouble. Never looked back afterwards.
That said, what you said is the truth; even if we have to go down, may as well go down fighting, if nothing else. Death is almost always the easy way out. It's much harder to live, and fight for our continued survival, no matter the odds. Not everybody can manage this, but it's the ideal to look up to no matter how desperate one's situation is.

Oh boy here we go.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't believe the bold portion to be accurate. I pity those who have believed this (However, I do acknowledge that it is a case to case basis). People who suffer from depression or mental/emotional illness need help to understand the bigger picture, that there is more to life beyond their problem. At the same time, they have to be willing to accept help. I'm fortunate enough to have various factors and perspectives in my life that I've acquired growing up that allows me to see past my depression no matter how dark it gets. Understandably, not everyone has the opportunities to see the world like I have. No one should be promising perfection, but as long as someone is alive there is a chance to help yourself and others around you.
