• Man arrested after flying over city in balloon chair
A Canadian man has been arrested after tying more than 100 balloons to a garden chair and flying over the city of Calgary. Daniel Boria was charged with mischief after the bold stunt, which he carried out to promote his cleaning products company. The 26-year-old said at one point he looked up and saw some of his 110 helium-filled balloons popping and the $20 chair he was sitting on shaking. He then looked down to see a 747 taking off. arrested for being awesome more like
Boria, who says he is a skydiver, claims he intended to parachute himself into the Calgary Stampede - an annual rodeo festival in the city. However, he missed the grounds, landing in a nearby industrial field and merely spraining his ankle.
Guy doesn't know about error and the chaotic nature of wind.
arrested for being awesome more like
It's a cool idea but if stuff were to to go wrong and the chair fell into a populated area someone could have gotten seriously hurt.
It's a cool idea but if stuff were to to go wrong and the chair fell into a populated area someone could have gotten seriously hurt.
Yeah; he would've been seriously hurt
Yeah; he would've been seriously hurt

While police confiscated Boria's parachute, the chair and the balloons were left floating somewere in the air.

It's a cool idea but if stuff were to to go wrong and the chair fell into a populated area someone could have gotten seriously hurt.
yeah but he'd be landing on people who never flew over the city on a balloon chair so who cares
Imagine actually doing what he did, that's kickin' fucking rad!
Didn't know that is against the law
Didn't know that is against the law
Airspace is heavily regulated because nobody likes plane crashes.
Reminds me of the time someone used those enormous weather probe balloons, hoping to just float gently above his lawn while drinking beer. He went about a mile up and froze to death.
Man, server admins in GMod have gotten really restrictive over the years.
Up: chair edition
Daniel Boria was charged with mischief
What a hilariously tame charge

Ive always wanted just enough balloons to be able to keep me on the ground, but when I jumped I could jump really high and slowly lower back down.
I mean, if he looked down to see a 747 taking off, it kinda implies that he was over an airport. I'm surprised he wasn't charged with something worse.
Reminds me of the time someone used those enormous weather probe balloons, hoping to just float gently above his lawn while drinking beer. He went about a mile up and froze to death.
Source?
Source?
I wanted to post the exact same anecdote. It was from Stephen Fry off QI, at least that's where I first heard it.
It's a cool stunt, and I'm all for people being able to take risks as long as nobody else is in harm's way -- but in all fairness, he shouldn't have done it so near to an airport. And if a plane flew underneath him, that probably was the case. Balloon chairs are cool. Balloon chairs colliding with high-speed hunks of metal hurtling through the air are not cool, and never end well.
Just a couple of days ago near Estonian city a couple of kids fell to their deaths, another pair seriously injured. The reason? They were jumping inside a balloon castle, which, after intense windblow, threw the castle on 10-13 meters. Guess this guy didnt think about that.
Reminds me of the time someone used those enormous weather probe balloons, hoping to just float gently above his lawn while drinking beer. He went about a mile up and froze to death.
This is actually a myth based on the flight of Larry Walters, who had intended to float above his frontyard using 45 weather balloons, a parachute (as a precaution, since he wanted to float about 30 feet above his house) and a lawnchair, but the force of the helium balloons shot him up nearly 3 miles into the air. The kicker? He survived being in the air for nearly an hour by shooting the balloons carefully with the pellet gun that he originally intended to use to get back down before accidentally spilling the gun over the side of the chair, crashing into some powerlines, causing a city blackout and then surviving that as well to jump down.
Didn't Bill try and do this in an episode of King of the Hill?
It's a cool idea but if stuff were to to go wrong and the chair fell into a populated area someone could have gotten seriously hurt.
Lol, you'd seriously worry about that? Chew him out for violating airplane airspace, and having done so get the fuck over everything else.
Imagine if ISIS/DAESH got their hands on a fleet of these...
That'd be hilarious to see in a news article. "ISIS members arrested floating in balloon chair, charged with mischief" Oh, ISIS!
Wasn't there a movie where some kid did this to win a kite flying contest, by holding the kite in his hands as he floated above the field?
Imagine if ISIS/DAESH got their hands on a fleet of these...
I don't think ISIS has invented Helium yet.
