According to the district attorney's office, the driver picked up the girl but did not take her home. A concerned family member used an Uber tracking feature to find the car, which was parked near the girl's home, authorities said. When the family member looked inside the vehicle, he found the girl, who was unconscious due to intoxication, and Mahran in the back seat, according to the district attorney's office. The family member helped her out of the car and called police while Mahran drove away, authorities said. Police used the family member's description of Mahran, the license plate number of the car and Mahran's Uber profile to find him, authorities said. He was arrested at his Huntington Beach apartment. Terrifying
Absolutely disgusting. I suppose it was bound to happen eventually although it would be nice if this weren't an inevitability.
What a cunt.
This is why uber needs to start background checks.
This is why uber needs to start background checks.
why would they do that if not legally mandated to? It just cuts into profit margins and they're planning to switch over to driverless cars so they won't be using human drivers for much longer
This is why uber needs to start background checks.
They do though?
This is why uber needs to start background checks.
Background checks don't predict the future
This is why uber needs to start background checks.
Similar crimes have been committed by taxi drivers who do have background checks afaik. My mum never let me ride a taxi on my own out of paranoia when I was younger.
They do though?
Not to a sufficient degree. This year Austin, Texas ruled that ridesharing companies needed to do fingerprint checks on their drivers to operate within city limits, and immediately after that proposition passed Uber and Lyft abandoned the city.
What a fucked up individual. Good job ruining someone's life.

They're pushing for more and more and more and more restrictions against ridesharing as a result of taxi lobbying.
Guy looks like a fucking weasel. And yeah, background checks don't necessarily predict the future so they aren't automatically a safety net.
This is pretty scary considering i take ubers like 4 times a week.
Austin Texas also replaced Uber with a cooperative service that's so much better I hear Good riddance
This is pretty scary considering i take ubers like 4 times a week.
The good news is that this sort of stranger rape is incredibly rare, so I wouldn't be terribly concerned
This is pretty scary considering i take ubers like 4 times a week.
How??? Are you planning on taking an Uber home when you're so intoxicated you're barely even conscious? That being said, what the fuck were her friends thinking, shoving her in a taxi when she's barely able to stay awake. If that was a friend of mine, I'd have taken the Uber with them and made sure they got home safe. [editline]13th November 2016[/editline] The guy is a stick thin little cunt, I'm sure if he tried that with someone actually awake and aware, he'd get batted aside and beat down with barely an effort. He only made his move because he saw she was completely defenseless. I wish he had been caught before he committed the crime though.
That is disgusting.

Shit like this makes me so mad, this guy's a fucking creep, but how could her friends have let this happen? and I use the words "let this happen" quite deliberately.
I know for a fact my mates wouldn't shove me in a taxi and send me home if I was barely keeping myself together. They'd either force me to crash at their place, or make the trip home with me and then take the cab back to theirs, and just tell me to reimburse them the following day. True mates don't leave friends who are completely fucked on booze on their own.
Believe it or not but you don't have to be unconscious to get raped, especially when you're 5'4 (162 cm). Taking Ubers has always been something I've been a little paranoid about, and my family isn't so happy about it either since Ubers are kind of unknown to them. I was told that Uber drivers have better background checks than Taxi drivers but according to this thread they don't. So yeah, it's kind of scary??

You might save yourself from some grey hairs.
Please consider that this is an individual, and him being a rapist has absolutely no influence on other Uber drivers being rapists. I don't think rapists choose targets who can easily put up a fight. Being a 5'4 dude doesn't make you an easy target. Taking Ubers on your morning or evening commute isn't really the time of day where something like this could happen. It'd be very very late night rides. I dunno why you waste energy even being paranoid about that. And like HybridTheroy said, this is one guy. The likelihood of more Uber drivers behaving this way is slim. Also, don't Uber drivers have reviews or something?
And again, that's not really how rape works. Your height and strength are pretty irrelevant I mean I get why the fear is there, it's only natural to react to news stories like this like that. But the chances of it happening to you are absolutely minuscule. It's far more likely to happen from a friend, someone you're dating, or a family member than an uber driver.
It's not like I'm never going to take Ubers again, guys. I just have the tendency to overthink these things. I appreciate the reassurance, though!
Disgusting and depressing. One of the few things that makes me glad I'm an ugly little troll :v: Seriously tho let this fucker rot in jail.

What a fucking disgusting excuse of a human being
