[quote]HOUSTON (AP) - Texas voters have rejected a plan to convert the shuttered Houston Astrodome into a convention center and have likely doomed the iconic stadium to demolition.
Tuesday's referendum would have authorized Harris County to issue up to $217 million in bonds to turn the world's first multipurpose domed stadium into a giant convention and exhibition space.
The so-called "Eighth Wonder of the World" opened in 1965 and was once home to the Houston Astros and Houston Oilers. But the Astrodome hasn't been home to a professional team since 1999, and it was closed to all events in 2009.

What a disappointing end to a magnificent building. Dying alone and forgotten, literally falling apart as time goes by. There were plans to turn it into a giant convention center and STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) center.
That's cool as hell, it's stupid that they let it rot in the first place.
I thought there were 7 wonders of the world?!
this would've been rad for a convention

When it was built in the 60's it was considered one of the most impressive engineering feats. It was given that self proclaimed title and it's stuck ever since.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaan, I used to live in Houston(Live just outside it now) and went to the Astrodome all the time with my Uncle to see the Astros play. Sucks seeing shit go away when you used to go there all the time, like Six Flags Astroworld that was right across the highway from the Astrodome... :(

There are plenty of places that have similar if not better architectural feats. Considering Texas is home to "America's Team", it comes to no surprise that they own a "wonder" of the world.

The Natural Bridge is pretty badass:

Always sad to see one of the old dome-type arenas go. I still miss the shitty ass RCA Dome.

Dallas =/= Houston
Mixing them up is mighty dangerous
Holy shit! Reading this article made me remember parts of my childhood! I remember going to the astrodome for a baseball game one year. Looking back on it it's kinda hard to wrap your mind around how much manpower it took to construct such a building.

Astroworld was great.

That would make a dope convention center.
I remember going to see monster trucks and a bunch of other shit at the Astrodome as a kid, cool as hell.

Parents tell me I've been down on the field level for a pit-pass kind of thing for Monster trucks but I was too young to remember.
Considering it's very hard to make a giant stadium profitable for an extended period of time it's pretty unsurprising.

somebody needs to go in there and urban explore it now and take somepictures before it's completely gone

Its owned by Reliant and is literally falling apart so its a huge hazard. Combine that with it's busy location, its probably under heavy security/surveillance to keep out lookyloos. You might as well urban explore Fort Knox. But if someone could get in, more power to them.
