Half a century later, the simple wooden structure can still carry up to 1,500 pounds of weight. The pallet's look and function has never changed.

Among the world's most ubiquitous but unsung standards, the Euro-Pallet is now celebrating its 50th anniversary -- and nobody knows who thought up the specs. From Die Zeit, lightly edited from Google Translate (rough but serviceable, like the pallets themselves):
Martin Leibrandt is the managing director of the Quality Association [for] pallets in Germany.... When he took office a year ago, he was still skeptical about the object of his daily work. How exciting can such a pile of boards be? Since then, he he has become one of the convinced fans of the simple wooden structure [carrying] up to 1,500 pounds. "Think about it: how many things you are breaking, which were invented 50 years ago and still look and function just as before," says Leibrandt. "That's awesome."
Wikipedia has a great survey of palletology. See especially the section on phytosanitary compliance!

I see this everywhere in IKEA. Really great design and innovation, for a wooden board.
Many a one I used to construct crude forts as a kid, and later used as a makeshift seat for outdoor drinking.
These things are the epitome of usefulness, use it to move heavy shit, then when you're done you can use the wood for something else.
There are a bunch in my basement right now, used to elevate cardboard boxes from the floor as water always comes in during the spring.
You seriously can't go a day without seeing these things, they're great
You should be careful reusing these, the fumigation stuff they use can be highly toxic sometimes.
I'll go spawn lots of these in GMod and break them to celebrate

Save the pallets, kill Laserbeams! :black101:
I didn't know they were called that.
I used to transport lots of them with a fork lifter at work.
They are so awesome for transporting stuff like barrels and big bags.
And they are definitely indestructible.
I love these things, had a role in my apprenticeship where I had to stack unused ones 20 high by hand.
Was hench as fuck at the end of the 6 months, as were all of the other guys there.
A brilliant example of simple yet highly functional and cheap design that's easy to replicate.
Lots of designers can learn something from it.
my washing machine sits in my basement, and it's a really old house so the basement gets flooded alot when it rains. the problem is, the washer gets into the rainwater and it all gets wet and stuff, so I put the washer on one of those pallets.
it kept wiggling off, so i put another pallet ontop of the first one, and duct taped the washing-machine onto both of them.
INNOVATION
Happy Birthday to you,
You're made out of wood,
You lift heavy stuff and...
Are com-bustable too!
Huh. Never heard of such things. We just use regular pallets where I work.
Seen loads IRL but smashed more in HL2
