Should the government be spending millions of taxpayer dollars on Super Bowl ads for the census in these times of daunting deficits and busted budgets? Some in Congress say no. But the Census Bureau nonetheless plans to spend an estimated $2.5 million for a Super Bowl package that includes three pre-game spots, a 30-second third-quarter commercial and on-air mentions by sportscaster James Brown.
http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/sen-isakson-others-want-291600.html?cxtype=rss_news_128746
Taxpayers might want to pay close attention to this Sunday's Super Bowl broadcast or they'll miss Uncle Sam's 30-second, $2.5-million reminder to stand up and be counted. That's what the Census Bureau paid CBS to get their message notched somewhere between a National Lampoon reprisal, a weird dude with big glasses, a beer-can house and men without pants.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/02/03/taxpayers-fork-million-single-census-ad-super-bowl/
How does the U.S. Census Bureau convince Americans to respond to their decennial surveys? Try tens of millions of dollars in paid advertising, including an ad in this Sunday's Super Bowl. The bureau first turned to advertising for the 2000 Census. Ten years before, their response rate had been only 65 percent and the projection was: Do nothing and the response in 2000 might drop to about 60 percent. So they spent $106.4 million and achieved a response rate of 64 percent.
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/census-advertise-super-bowl-tax-dollars-work/story?id=9745751 Poster's Comments: Ah-ja-guh, who-za-wha? People need to stop worrying about every single dime of "Taxpayer money". Edit: Myself included. I lose a solid portion of every paycheck to taxes as well as union dues.
It's not like the government is spending our tax money on training monkeys to dance, at least they are doing something useful.
People need to stop worrying about every single dime of "Taxpayer money".
You'll worry about it when you start paying taxes.
People need to stop worrying about every single dime of "Taxpayer money".
While it's true that there is a lot of incessant whining, people who give up their money to taxes, deserve to know where it goes and to be sure it's not wasted. Maybe when you grow up and experience what it's like to lose hard earned money on some bullshit waste, then you will know how people feel.
What if I don't want to be counted? :colbert: Huge waste of money. [editline]11:44PM[/editline] Screw it, I'm done paying taxes. Lock me up.
People need to stop worrying about every single dime of "Taxpayer money".
It's my fucking money, and I will worry about not only every single dime, but nickel and penny as well.
This really sucks

Your Union could be supporting something politically you don't support.
It's my fucking money, and I will worry about not only every single dime, but nickel and penny as well.
I don't see your name on it. :smugdog:
Dear god, it costs you a fraction of a cent. Fucking get over it. The census is pretty damn important.
Assuming this IRS is correct, in 2004 around 131,000,000 filed returns, that means that I have paid $0.01 towards this commercial. Holy shit awesome.
That's an average of about 1.8 cents per taxpayer if my calculations are correct. WHO THE FUCK CARES
Maybe when you grow up and experience what it's like to lose hard earned money on some bullshit waste, then you will know how people feel.
I'm european i'm used to it
That's an average of about 1.8 cents per taxpayer if my calculations are correct. WHO THE FUCK CARES
It adds up. If they buy this commercial, what's stopping them from buying another? If we looked at every expenditure as "well it only cost me 2 cents :downs:", it could really add up. For instance, if I buy a meal at Burger King every day of the week, that's about $6 a day. Thats cheap! So by your logic "WHO THE FUCK CARES IT'S $6 FOR A MEAL." But then when you realize that it's $42 week, it's not so cheap anymore

Did you also really compare a fucking $1.8 cents to 6 dollars?

And 20 years later they're still smoking. Lame example, but it's usually best not to start. Yes I did compare 1.8 cents to 6 dollars, it's called an example. Small numbers can be become very large if summed over a long period of time.

Not to mention if it's from census bureau, they would have something to say. If they spent even a dollar on stupid shit other than this, we'd go apeshit. Taxes benefit the fucking government, they wouldn't spend it on any other stupid shit. Oh, what you did is not an example, it's called being hyperbolic.

So what if they spend 3 million on a ad on one of the most watched television shows of the year. They need to point it out. Plus it all boils down on how the government is going to spend their money in the next 10 years anyways.
This is the fucking US CENSUS. It's once every ten years, and is extremely important. Seriously, stop complaining over shit like this.

I mean, really who gives a shit, it's only like 1 freaking cent for you right? Maybe it's the principal of what they are doing that makes people upset. They can see how the government wastes their money while many of the rest of us struggle to make ends meet, struggle to pay our taxes...
This is the fucking US CENSUS. It's once every ten years, and is extremely important. To everyone saying the government is wasting money: this is the United States Census. This shit is pretty fucking important. If they use the commercial to educate and enlighten people on what the Census is for, then it is money well spent. This determines hundreds of thousands of factors that will play out over the next ten years in the United States, from Congressional Representation to Taxation. Also, 2.5 million dollars is not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. For example, a single M2 Bradley costs 3 million a pop, and there's been over 6,500 produced and in service.
[del]Taxpayer[/del] money wasted on Super Bowl [del]ad[/del].
What's funny is people are complain that the government is wasting money on a census commercial that airs during a sports event where the players are payed millions a year.
What's funny is that the money being used on the Super Bowl could be used to save lives in third world countries. Wait, that's not funny.
I still don't understand people watching sport events. Sports are boring to play, and even more boring to watch.
The government could be spending that money in more influential ways
This is what the census bureau is doing with their allotted funds. What would you prefer they do with it, because they're going to spend it on something. Collecting accurate census data is incredibly important because of its effect on legislative districts, so I'm glad they're using it to get more people to participate, rather than squandering it on unimportant crap so their budget isn't cut.
