A now former Kansas State University student was expelled from her college after posting an image to Snapchat that featured dark facial masks and a caption that read: “finally feels good to be a n***a.”
dumb she got kicked out and dumb she posted it
good, deserved
While still having her freedom of speech, a quick look in the Student Code of Conduct or whatever Honor Code the university has should determine whether she is justifiably expelled. If the code does not state that the university does not allow any form of discrimination (including racism, or if it does not explicitly state harsh punishments in response of such acts, then she legally had no right to be expelled.
Stupid that she posted it, but you pay to go there, how can they ban you for something like that, it's your own personal life?
You shouldn't get expelled for something as harmless as this.
Is that blackface or some facial mask that she decided to make a stupid comment for as a joke?
The real fucked up part is that she had a friend who spread this and ratted her out.
I say instead make her take a race relations class or something and only expels her if she refuses. Outright expelling her will only increase her stupidity.
A bit of an overreaction, I'd say. Sure, it was stupid, but it wasn't intended to be spread around for everybody to see. It was between her and her friends. We all make jokes that are a little over the line every now and again to our friends, don't we?
Colleges going around checking out their students' social media is creepy as fuck
kicking people out for making "Racist" jokes isn't going to make racism go away

just saying, not all race related jokes are 100% always because the person is racist.
Snip, wrong school
So I'm currently looking at the Student Handbook of the Kentucky State University and noticed this excerpt here:
"Speech and Criticism
The Board of Regents recognizes the right of freedom of speech, including criticism,
expression of grievances or petitions for redress of wrongs, so long as freedom of speech and
assembly are exercised in a responsible, lawful and peaceful manner and do not interfere
with the protected rights and freedoms of other citizens.
The Board supports and protects the rights of members of the University community
to express fully and in responsible ways their views for or against actions and opinions with
which they agree or disagree. " (pg 10)
So I'm assuming that the university did not considered this freedom of speech responsible, lawful, nor peaceful, but I'm not sure if they even considered the protected rights part.
But I think this excerpt also reinforces their reason of expulsion
"Section 3. Offenses Against Persons
A. Physical abuse, verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, sexual contact
without permission, stalking, coercion and other conduct which threatens or
endangers the health or safety of any person. This section is intended to include any
contact or communication that threatens, harasses, or injures a person." (pg 16)
I'm thinking that the act falls under "verbal abuse" and "harassment" that supposedly "endangers the health or safety of any person" (including emotionally). I guess if it offends any person, which mind you, can mean only one person, it's a violation of Section 3A.
But here, if you want a look at the handbook to show something wrong with my argument, here's the link: http://kysu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/StudentHandbookUpdated.pdf
Wrong school. But theirs probably isn't very different.
Woman makes harmless joke - expelled. Some frat boy actually rapes someone - "wouldnt want to ruin his college experience with jailtime".
Wrong school. But theirs probably isn't very different.
Well, I made a fool of myself, gonna check the right school this time
Here we go, it really isn't much different like lurker said, but wanted to present the right code anyway:
"Section. 3. Conduct Code-Rules and Regulations.
A. The following described behaviors constitute misconduct in which disciplinary sanctions will be imposed."
...
"3. Conduct that threatens or endangers the mental or physical health or safety of any person, including, but not limited to, physical abuse, verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, and coercion."
I suppose that it was taken as endangerment to the "mental" health of, again, any person (which can even be one person), so it is considered a violation of Section 3A
They even enforced it online to reinforce the conduct:
"6. Telephone or Internet harassment, which shall include:"
...
"e. Sending text, picture or video messages with intent to harass or harm.
f. Sending text, picture, video, or audio messages over electronic forums, including, but not limited to, social media websites, instant messenger or chat services, message boards or any other electronic format with intent to harass or harm"

I don't know why it's only showing Section 3 and not other sections, and I don't know if they just re-edited that page to show ONLY Section 3 after the incident. I would press F12 and maybe see if the coding could provide the most recent publishment date on it to see if it's been recently edited, but I'm not able to get on PC at the moment, so I guess that's out for now.
It was really dumb to do, but it's her social life. And it being on snapchat, it's sent to her friends, people have different senses of humor sometimes. Dumb, but it had no malicious intent, just a joke. I do think many colleges see their students as a representative of the college's reputation. So if KSU is known as the college where they allow such things to happen, people may start looking for other options. (If they are offended by one person's behavior who in no way actually represents the college).
Though I still think it was dumb on both sides to do what they did.
Even better if she paid large amounts of money to get in and is now in large amounts of debt because one of her "friends" spread it maliciously.
This is disgusting. Its obvious she was just being playful. Its not racist in any way, hell, she even says she sent it specifically to friends she knew wouldn't be offended.

I got extremely confused by azn888's shitpost and your reasonable post because of your avatars.
Colleges going around checking out their students' social media is creepy as fuck
I had a college professor who wanted to warn us about what we post on the internet, so he went through all the social media he could find for each student and wrote down some things and put it in a powerpoint to show the class.
That was the creepiest thing ever

I'd instantly drop out of that class. Someone going through everyones information and revealing it like that? Excuse me?

That is actually the entire point? ASSUMING he only found stuff that was publicly available, the point is that absolutely everyone has access to that information. If you find that creepy, you should probably not put all that information up.
Heck if you have ever added a bot on any social media, by accident or curiosity, chances are your private data is now public data (potentially, the bot could be programmed to do anything). Basically, you should be careful about uploading private data as well.

See this is what makes me panic about making racier jokes around my friends, is this idea that one of them could rat you out and ruin your life.
If it's in their policy to expel for racism, maybe she should've read their rules before posting this? I'm pretty sure most colleges still give out a student handbook with those guidelines, and they've been involved with student's "social lives" since long before the internet. There's never been a separation of your private life and how schools respond - getting arrested, harassing people, cyberbullying, or racism like this can happen off-campus but still get them involved, because you agreed to that already. I'd still say it's overkill compared to a race relations/social media class or something, but this was handled according to their rules.
When you go to college, even when you're self-paying, they reserve the right to kick you out. Tuition isn't an excuse to do whatever you want without consequences.

You act like she posted it for everyone to see. I don't need a college to dictate what I do in my private life.

Comparing an occasional person looking up your info to a teacher doing that for all his students and showing to them all the stuff found is stupid.

She did actually. Social media is never private, and obviously one of her friends was hurt enough by this to report it. I also edited my post to say colleges get involved with your private life all the time, even off-campus.
As dumb as she was for posting it, I don't think it warrants immediately excluding her.
Did she do it on university property? If not I don't think it's acceptable for them to expel her for what she does in her private life off campus.
Oh look another persons life fucked up because MUH FEELINGS!!! this chick is out 10k+ because somebody got their panties in a twist :speechless:
It's a tasteless joke but it's not grounds for expulsion. Jesus Christ. Literally fucking up someone's future over a joke that didn't hurt anybody and was a dumb mistake that should have been punished in another way.
