• "I am over 18" buttons not acceptable, Playboy fined £100,000

Playboy has been fined £100,000 after it failed to protect children from potentially harmful pornographic material. Ofcom said Playboy TV and Demand Adult, both owned by Playboy, allowed access to 'hardcore videos and images' and did not have acceptable controls in place to check users were aged 18 or over. The regulator concluded that Playboy’s failure to protect children from potentially accessing the sites was 'serious, repeated and reckless'. It said the homepage of Demand Adult displayed hardcore pornographic material that could be viewed by clicking on a button labelled 'Enter I am over 18'. Users could also access more paid-for content with a debit card. Neither of the controls constituted an effective age verification system, Ofcom said. Playboy TV also asked users to self-certify their age before entering the main site but, unlike Demand Adult, the material on the home page showed sexual activity without explicit detail. Users could also access this website’s hardcore pornographic material by registering using a debit card. Again, neither system was effective at verifying age, the regulator concluded. The websites are regulated by Ofcom and the Authority for Video on Demand (ATVOD) - unlike other pornographic websites - because they provide access to videos in a similar way to adult services broadcast on television and fall within UK jurisdiction. Due to the 'serious nature of these breaches', Playboy was fined £65,000 in relation to Demand Adult and £35,000 for Playboy TV. Ofcom said effective age controls included asking for the details of a credit card, which are not available to under-18s. Oh come on I watched porn as a child and I turned out fine.
Is this because there are tits on the enter button or because everybody clicks through the enter button?
what exactly is an effective method of verifying age?

well, obviously that's not the case as you can get gift cards that operate as credit cards at literally any age
well, obviously that's not the case as you can get gift cards that operate as credit cards at literally any age
Aren't they debit cards? which are considered not acceptable.
They are well within legal grounds for this.. But, it's a bit vexatious.
Or maybe the most effective age controls are the parents monitoring what fucking sites they let their kids go on, if they're good enough parents they could just tell their kids "don't go on porn" and if the kids disobey and the parents see via the search history (and this would only happen if the parents were actually that fucking strict to check) that they did it then it's up to them don't take it out on the fucking sites
most sites dont even have these buttons
Why is playboy being fined when it's the parent's not doing their job? Should they fine Google as well since their only precaution to hardcore pornographic material is a button?

But I'm 18 and don't have a credit card... And to be honest I don't want to be throwing my details at every site that needs me to be over 18. Better not start doing this for trailers on game sites
The 'I am over 18' date of birth thing is the most useless waste of fucking time ever made Jan 1 1901 GOOD2GO
well, obviously that's not the case as you can get gift cards that operate as credit cards at literally any age
Those are debt cards - i.e. the money comes straight out, or is debited, from your bank balance or the card's balance as soon as you make a purchase or withdrawal. You have to be 11 to own one in the UK Credit cards basically borrow money up to a limit (if you have one), which you are then billed for at the end of the month. Because it counts as a loan, you have to be 18 to own one.
Who in their right mind would enter credit card info into a porn site even if they're over 18
Ofcom said effective age controls included asking for the details of a credit card, which are not available to under-18s.
What bollocks. I don't have or want a credit card, and my visa debit is for some reason recognised everywhere as a visa credit card. So yeah, that wouldn't work. The only thing that would work is sending in a copy of your passport or something - but who the fuck is gonna do that to watch porn?
I remember once when I was 10 I saw a boob and it gave me nightmares for years.
UK stop being a weenie
Who in the right mind would give their credit card details to a porn website as "age verification" you'd think the people making these laws had never watched porn or its some vast femenist conspiracy. How is playboy harmful porn anyway?
I'll be so happy to turn 18 later this year. I won't be causing anyone any trouble by going on some of my favorite sites.
The whole age verification thing is stupid, but they agreed to be regulated like this. The only way to protect your children is to browse the internet with them and take an active interest in what they get up to. And then they're still gonna look at porn whatever you do, so educate them about it.
you guys heard it from garry, show your kids the best porn sites to avoid mishaps quality control is best control
i used to think that if i clicked on this before being 18 the police would find out and hunt me down
Oh the humanity. Good thing the law will now shield our children from those evil mammaries.
you guys heard it from garry, show your kids the best porn sites to avoid mishaps quality control is best control
Set them loose one deviantart, job done.
Aren't they debit cards? which are considered not acceptable.
Most major debit cards such as Visa or Master Card cards have credit function which allow them to work in place of an actual credit card.
Nothing bonds father and son like sharing a Brazzers account
you guys are forgetting this tedtalk... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wSF82AwSDiU do you really want your kid watching porn :|
what exactly is an effective method of verifying age?
Having a second button beside the first that says "I am NOT 18" that redirects to Google, of course
Lol there's no such thing as an effective age verification system that isn't sketchy as hell. there's no way I'm putting in credit card details to ANY porn site, that's just stupid. Not saying Playboy isn't trustworthy, but that shit can be traced, and can ruin reputations.
