• The 2nd amendment as the founding fathers imagined it: Florida rednecks to compete at hunting Python
The US state of Florida is set to begin a competitive Burmese python hunt, in an attempt to rid the Everglades wetlands of the invasive species. The month-long contest, called the Python Challenge, begins on Saturday. About 550 people have signed up to compete for two prizes: $1,000 (£620) for the longest python killed and $1,500 for the most pythons taken. First imported as pets, the feral snakes vie with native animals for food and have devastated mammal populations. The US banned the import of the carnivorous snakes last year. But some wildlife officials said the ban came too late - after the southern Asia natives had begun breeding in the Everglades. Burmese pythons, which can grow up to 23ft (7m) long, eat small mammals, birds and alligators. Hunters from more than 25 states have signed up for the event. Among them will be US Senator Bill Nelson, a 70-year-old Democrat. The state will train hunters to avoid mistaking the python for native snakes, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) spokeswoman Carli Segelson said. The FWC recommends shooting the snakes in the head or using a device that drives a bolt into the brain. Hunters will be able to keep the pelts. Decapitation is not recommended unless the brain is immediately destroyed, as snakes can remain conscious for a time after the head is separated from the body. Pythons are a serious problem.

Good. This is one of the times where rampant hunting of a given species is beneficial. Let's just hope they don't start intentionally 'mistaking' local snakes for the invasive ones.
My wildlife teacher said to us that people were throwing their pet pythons into the wild because either they couldn't afford it or they got too big. They're an invasive species, and basically he said to kill them on sight to help contain the problem.
This has nothing to do with the second amendment. Sensational to the billionth degree. Pythons are actually kind of a problem in Florida.
This really doesn't have anything to do with the 2nd amendment. Living in Florida I can tell you right now that Pythons are a huge threat to our ecosystem as of right now.
I don't quite understand how this has anything to do with rednecks, or the second amendment. Neither were mentioned in the article. And it's good Florida is finally doing something effective to get rid of pythons, they're a very nasty species.

I wish they'd do this with Coyotes here in Ontario, I know some municipalities take bounties on them, but not all of them, and the animals are a serious problem to deer and small game populations, as well as a threat to farmers.

Why am I imagining guys going around hunting Pythons with Python magnums?
Why am I imagining guys going around hunting Pythons with Python magnums?
Because it's Florida, and you can hunt with a handgun there IIRC. To be honest there's probably going to be people doing that, and taking photos of it, and people on Florida hunting forums will find it hilarious.
I'm not entirely sure why this article was rated dumb. It's completely and totally necessary to completely ELIMINATE these buggers from the Everglades and Florida in general. They're an invasive species that tends to prey on the eggs of bird species that are now slowly disappearing because the offspring and eggs are all being eaten.
Pythons are a problem. They have no predators here, they even EAT THE ALLIGATORS.
My grandparents told me about this. The hunters like to wait until a cold spell, because the pythons literally rain from the trees and can't move very fast. Easy pickings. Also to the guy above me, HOLY FUCK. I did not know anything could or would eat a FUCKING ALLIGATOR.
It may be a small one but these fuckers can still eat them. Look at how that snake can extend it's god damn mouth!
I wonder if anyone in Florida's ever been eaten by one
i was
Good. Those damn pythons are taking jobs away from honest, hardworking American snakes.
I went to the glades today and seen a few gators, and just to put it in perspective That's a python that ate a gator. Yes, they get that big.
the second amendment has absolutely nothing to do with hunting.
This has nothing to do with the second amendment. Sensational to the billionth degree. Pythons are actually kind of a problem in Florida.
Sensational? In MY Sensational Headlines?? Why I never!
Sensational? In MY Sensational Headlines?? Why I never!
Sensationalist headlines got it's name from Garry being spiteful, not because you're supposed to only post sensationalism.
why don't they just shoot them in the leg
If only they were delicious, this hunting might've started earlier.
If only they were delicious, this hunting might've started earlier.
Snake is pretty good when you cook it right. Then again in my book, any meat is good if cooked right.
HUMAN?!
From what I've heard, tastes like pork.
