Police in Brownsville, Texas, today shot and killed an 8th-grade student who was brandishing a gun at a middle school, theBrownsville Herald reports. Update at 12:45 p.m. ET: A seventh grade student who said he was two classrooms from where the shooting took place said the school was already on lockdown when he heard three shots, the Associated Press reports. Miguel Grimaldo, 12, said students later followed police out of the building and boarded buses that took them to a neighboring park, where his mother picked him up late this morning. Brownsville is 280 miles south of San Antonio on the southern tip of Texas. Update at 12:09 p.m. ET: A school administrator apparently noticed the student carrying the gun and called police, Brownsville police Detective J.J. Trevino said, according to the Associated Press. He said investigators hadn't determined whether the student fired any shots. He said he had no information on why the student had the gun on him. "It's still under investigation, as far as how he came about to bringing the weapon or if he encountered anybody or anything else," Trevino said. Update at 11:27 a.m. ET: Brownsville police Detective J.J. Trevino says officers found the student with a handgun in a hallway and shot him, the Associated Press reports. Update at 11:17 a.m. ET: The newspaper, quoting Justice of the Peace Kip V. Johnson Hodge, reports that the suspect was an eighth-grade student at the school. Original post: The newspaper says the suspect had "engaged police" around 8 a.m. today but it was not immediately clear if he had also opened fire. The Cummings Middle School was locked down during the ordeal. There were no other injuries, although a student was detained for questioning, the newspaper says.
What did he do that made them shoot him, I wonder. I can't imagine that blowing away a student is their first choice. They would (hopefully) tase him first... (User was banned for this post ("Didn't read the article." - Swebonny))

talk about sensationalist title
If only that kid had a gun to defend him self, maybe then he wouldn't be shot. (User was banned for this post ("Didn't read the article" - Swebonny))
What did he do that made them shoot him, I wonder. I can't imagine that blowing away a student is their first choice. They would (hopefully) tase him first...
i don't think sending a student in to spastic twitching while he's clutching a gun is the best choice? i mean maybe if you want to be REALLY cynical you could say they should have just shot him once to disable him, but he had a gun so i don't honestly blame them.
The article says that he was threatening them with a gun, is it really that hard to read?

The newspaper says the suspect had "engaged police" around 8 a.m. today but it was not immediately clear if he had also opened fire
HE THREATENED THEM!!!!
talk about sensationalist title
Hey, it's just what the article is named...
It's kind of disheartening to not read any anything about them trying to get the kid to give them the gun, did they see the gun and just immediately put him down?
The article says that he was threatening them with a gun, is it really that hard to read?
They say he "engaged police." Does that mean that he was pointing a gun at them and shouting, or was he just standing in the hall holding the gun in his hand ?
If only that kid had a gun to defend him self, maybe then he wouldn't be shot.
are you stupid
Sucks that the kid had to die, but bringing a gun/threatening to shoot up a school is serious business. I don't think the force used was necessarily uncalled for.
What did he do that made them shoot him, I wonder. I can't imagine that blowing away a student is their first choice. They would (hopefully) tase him first...
A kid with a gun shooting in a school maybe? The cops are allowed to take any action to protect the other students from the gunman and that involves shooting him before anyone gets injured or killed. Plus, a tazer has no where the range of a gun, so they cops couldn't just run up to him without a high risk of getting shot.
I expected a mistake or accident from the thread title, but if the kid brought a gun to school it's completely understandable. There have been too many school shootings to take these things lightly. Obviously we don't know the full story, but from the article, I don't know if the police did anything wrong. Better safe than sorry.

Cummings middle school...
Cummings middle school...
Never mind guys, the little guys's alive and recovering, he's making jokes already.
cumming bullets into lil kids brains
brandishing Verb: Wave or flourish (something, esp. a weapon) as a threat or in anger or excitement.
brandish is also an overused word in sensationalist newspapers to describe someone holding something
If only that kid had a gun to defend him self, maybe then he wouldn't be shot.
Ban all guns
brandishing Verb: Wave or flourish (something, esp. a weapon) as a threat or in anger or excitement.
Okay, I concede that the article used the word "brandished." What I am wondering is whether or not he actually did this.
brandish is also an overused word in sensationalist newspapers to describe someone holding something
There aren't many details yet, I'm just going to assume that the kid refused to put down his gun, hence why he was shot.
What I am wondering is whether or not he actually did this.
I don't think any of us are capable of knowing that at this time.
Title is misleading
Police in Brownsville, Texas, today shot and killed an 8th-grade student who was brandishing a gun at a middle school

It's kind of disheartening to not read any anything about them trying to get the kid to give them the gun, did they see the gun and just immediately put him down?
A gun is a gun, it does not matter how old a kid is. It does not make it any-less deadly. Pull a firearm on police and expect that threat to be met with deadly force. People in this thread are tripping out, they didn't read the article or just don't understand the timeline of it. This isn't some sad case of mistaken identity or police brutality. A kid brought a gun to school, who fuckings knows what he intended to do. The point is, he pulled it out on police and paid for it. The quick response of the head-teacher or whoever it was and police saved countless lives. Kids don't need guns, people don't need guns at schools. I highly doubt this kid was some banger just carrying to be carrying.
he didn't shoot the gun can we at least stick to the story if we're going to be arguing about it
It doesn't even matter, plus 3 gun shots were reported and that's when the students were evacuated. If you bring a gun to school, expect to get shot. If I had kids in that school, I don't care who it is, I wan't them shot if needed before my or anyone else kid gets shot.
Title is misleading
But a student was still shot and killed by police.
And that officer never slept again.
