Georgia's lieutenant governor says he will 'kill' Delta tax break unless airline reinstates relation
Republican politicians in Delta Air Lines' home state of Georgia are striking back at the airline after it decided to scrap discounted airfare for participants in an upcoming National Rifle Association meeting.
"I will kill any tax legislation that benefits Delta unless the company changes its position and fully reinstates its relationship with the NRA," tweeted Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, referring to a bill that could save Delta taxes on jet fuel. "Corporations cannot attack conservatives and expect us not to fight back."
Atlanta-based Delta and its competitor United Airlines over the weekend said they would no longer offer discounts for travel to the meeting in May. The airlines joined a list of other companies, including Avis Budget Group, Hertz Global Holdings and Metlife, that announced they would end their relationship with the gun rights group after 17 people were killed in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14.
Candidate for lieutenant governor and former state senator Rick Jeffares tweeted that he is "leading the charge to let Delta know their attack on the NRA and our 2nd Amendment is unacceptable."
After its tweet announcing the end of the NRA discounts, Delta said in a statement that the "decision reflects the airline's neutral status in the current national debate over gun control amid recent school shootings" and that it was taken "out of respect for our customers and employees on both sides."
The airline added that "it continues to support the Second Amendment."
On social media, some customers thanked the airlines for taking a stance against the NRA while others said they would take their business to other airlines. Delta is the second-largest airline behind American Airlines, which does not have such a discount agreement with the NRA, a spokesman said. Southwest also said it does not have an agreement with the NRA.
The NRA called the decision of the companies to cut perks to the NRA "a shameful display of political and civic cowardice.
In time, these brands will be replaced by others who recognize that patriotism and determined commitment to Constitutional freedoms are characteristics of a marketplace they very much want to serve," the NRA added.
United and Delta had offered airfare discounts of between 2 percent and 10 percent, according to the NRA's website.
The decision by the two airlines is more "symbolic" and doesn't cut any meaningful discount, said Henry Harteveldt, a travel-industry expert and founder of the consulting group Atmosphere Research Group.

That is certainly in the running for the most petty partisanship I have heard of today.
"I oppose any and all government meddling in the free market, except when I do it, in which case it's patriotism."

Republicans; the party of private businesses and limited government until its inconvenient for them.
damn, ninja'd
so much for that big government retoric, eh
you're barely even able to transport guns on commercial airlines anyways.
but go ahead, prove futurama wrong, show the world Georga is more than a delta hub
"I don't get discounts for having a gun anymore? I'm being attacked!"
Christ, what babies.
What even is the reasoning behind getting discounts for being an NRA member anyway? Especially for stuff like flying, which has nothing to do with guns?
Am I being oppressed because Delta won't give me a discount flight to an anime convention?
Oh, wait, no, there is no reasoning besides faux-patriotic ferver.
So, uhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Whatever happened to small government and the free market?

You have to be incredibly stupid or purposefully disingenious to say these companies are attacking the second amendment by dropping business with the NRA

In this case it's very possible that both of these are true.

It's bad for business.

I'm not even sure what the arithmetic here is. Delta is a huge jobs provider for Georgia and brings in more money to the state in a day than the NRA does in a year. Is this just unconstitutional virtue signaling?
Is this just unconstitutional virtue signaling?
Yes.
In this case it's very possible that both of these are true.
It's Georgia, it's more than just possible.
Here is Delta's full statement
Delta informed the National Rifle Association Saturday that the airline will end its contract for discounted fares for travel to the association's 2018 annual meeting. The company requested that the NRA remove Delta's information from its meeting website.
Delta’s decision reflects the airline’s neutral status in the current national debate over gun control amid recent school shootings. Out of respect for our customers and employees on both sides, Delta has taken this action to refrain from entering this debate and focus on its business. Delta continues to support the 2nd Amendment.
This is not the first time Delta has withdrawn support over a politically and emotionally charged issue. Last year, Delta withdrew its sponsorship of a theater that staged a graphic interpretation of “Julius Caesar” depicting the assassination of President Trump. Delta supports all of its customers but will not support organizations on any side of any highly charged political issue that divides our nation.
Conservatives are fighting to be spoiled brats.
From what I've seen in the responses to this, it is illegal for him to do that

"libtards do it too so who cares?"
/argument
This is rather concerning to due to the fact that the LT.Gov shouldn't be threatening a private entity for what's clearly personal gains.

It's so fucking dumb that he's threatening to kill legislation over special discounts for NRA members
It's so fucking dumb that he's threatening to kill legislation over special discounts for NRA members
Yeah, but if he didn't stand up for those poor oppressed gun owners in the NRA, who have an entire amendment in the constitution protecting them, who would? The founding fathers? The Constitution? Don't make me laugh.

Kinda unrelated but I walked by a TV in public that was playing Tucker Carlson today and overheard him saying "the states don't have the right to defy the federal government. If the federal government says it, they must obey.." or something along those lines and I just started laughing at how blatant the two-facedness of the party is. It's all gung-ho free market and states' rights until it's not in their interests.

That definitely sounds like something Tucker Carlson, or anyone on Fox News, would have said under Obama.
This is petty and stupid, which won't do the state any good; other than a quick NRA rimjob for brownie points, for what purpose is beyond me.

Yeah lol. I honestly miss O'Reilly at this point. I mean, he was fucking terrible, but he also would get so unhinged that he would clearly embarrass himself on air pretty frequently. Tucker Carlson is so smug and pretentious, especially when he furrows his eyebrows down and leaves his mouth hanging open like some kind of learning disabled monkey while his guests talk. He exclusively has on really ditsy stupid liberal college activists 90% of the time and usually has a pretty easy time making them look stupid, whereas O'Reilly would have the same guests on and somehow still manage to look like an ass. Just for fun, I'm gonna guess that Carlson was talking about sanctuary cities defying ICE or something, then look it up after this post for a goof.

tucker carlson constantly looks like he's trying to utilize psychic powers that he doesn't have

Putting aside for a moment that not supporting the NRA has about as much to do with the second amendment as belching with fine art: isn't what they're proposing kind of really illegal? As in, first amendment illegal?

You don't know that. Maybe he's actively fighting off the invasive, mind reading gamma rays beamed directly at him by the deep state and Michelle Obama? :downs:
Delta CEO says, 'Our values are not for sale,' after Georgia lawmakers drop tax break
"While Delta's intent was to remain neutral, some elected officials in Georgia tied our decision to a pending jet fuel tax exemption, threatening to eliminate it unless we reversed course," Bastian said. "Our decision was not made for economic gain and our values are not for sale."
Delta now wants to review what perks it offers to other politically involved groups.
"We are in the process of a review to end group discounts for any group of a politically divisive nature," Bastian said.
