Basically I've had a few run-ins with a controlling and manipulative asshole and I'm trying to figure out exactly what the hell is wrong with him, or more specifically: 1. What tactic he's using to manipulate people and how to defend against it 2. What logical fallacy he's using in said tactic 3. What the fuck is wrong with him The manipulation tactic is this: For the sake of controlling a certain person or group of people, subject A proposes a false dilemma and uses circular logic to defend said false dilemma. If this strategy begins to fail, subject A will find a way to silence any opposition in any way possible, whether it be by spreading gossip or by using violence. An example of the logical fallacy (one I've made up, not applying to this particular situation) is that people who oppose Idea B, invented by subject A, are working for the government. Idea B is infallible. Idea B will be reconsidered when sufficient evidence to the contrary is provided, but said evidence will be overlooked because Idea B is infallible and people who oppose Idea B are working for the government. This may seem a bit incoherent and vague as I really have no clue what the hell I'm talking about, so if you need clarification, say so.
Look into gaslighting, egocentricity, and psychopathy. Covers a lot of bases related to manipulative people.
Change the conversation topic to trains, that would knock him off balance. Then argue how nobody can oppose trains.
Look into gaslighting
Thanks a ton, this is great insight! It's not exactly what I'm talking about but it plays a big role in it!
use the chewbacca defense
Thanks a ton, this is great insight! It's not exactly what I'm talking about but it plays a big role in it!
You can deviate to similar topics from there to try and gain a foothold in the situation you're in.
You may have to cast a counter-curse to free your friends from his control.
stop talking to him?
He sounds like he runs a conspiracy or religious cult of some sort.
Some context might be needed, OP your description is really vague.
Sounds like a stereotypical high school jerk, why are you so concerned?
Stop giving him/her your time/money/attention. Don't get involved. Forget about whatever involvement you may or may not have.
fart in his face
im a qualified armchair psychologist
Shoot him in the kneecap.
Get him high and give him some paradoxes or ego death stuff.
Reminds me of this for some reason.
Why don't you check your own thoughts, feelings, and reactions to this individual and start working on that before you try to work on him. I'm making guesses here but from the OP it sounds like you might need to work on yourself.
take an intro to logic class if you need help debating. you'll learn everything about logical fallacies in sentence structuring.
by using violence.
That's one efficient manipulative tactic. Break his jaw in, problem solved.
Play that mana leak
