The Hollywood Reporter reports that Furious 7 director James Wan has just inked a deal with Warner Bros. to helm the Aquaman film starring Jason Momoa. Wan is also set to direct Sony's upcoming Robotech adaptation, which the company hopes will be the start of a whole new franchise. Aquaman, which has Momoa playing what might be a more brutal take on DC comic's ruler of Atlantis, is currently slated to hit theaters in 2018, along with The Flash. Warner Bros. is moving at a swift clip with its comic book adaptation to keep up with Marvel's own schedule, with Suicide Squad already filming for release next year. Aquaman will make his film debut next year in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. As for Robotech, Sony bought the rights for the classic anime series earlier this spring, and it plans on launching an "impressive universe" of wide storytelling possibilities the likes of which can compete with Transformers.
yeah
This is the third time I've heard about a Robotech movie being made. I wonder if it's still going to star Toby Maguire?
I have no clue what Robotech is, but with a name like Robotech I think January Jones would be a perfect fit
Wonder if they'll try to semi-accurately adapt Macross or just throw it out the window and be in name only. Hopefully they'll at least still have transforming jets. Robotech is this weird dub of three completely unrelated anime strung together into a "connected" story because SDF Macross wasn't long enough for syndication.
Hopefully the Robotech movie dies again. Live action anime rarely works and an American production of it won't work.
It'll be just Robotech most likely. Down to protoculture and all that fun stuff. Just with less singing most likely. I willing to bet that adapting actual Macross would be a no-no in whatever contract they signed with Harmony Gold.
I honestly can't imagine a Robotech movie working out too well today, but at least it's more likely of causing a revival of the franchise than that failed movie several years back.
james wan-na make a movie huh well i hope it turns out better than the conjuring
Woah woah woah what the fuck, theres a robotech movies in production?
I'll always see Jason momoa as ronin on Stargate, but really they went for a unique approach to aquaman to maybe finally save his reputation, but I doubt it'll be a hit because its aquaman

Mention Robotech to a Macross fan and they'll probably be displeased to say the least.
James Wan also created the Saw films. Not saying much tho
Him and Leigh Whannell made the first saw, that's all Wan did for the most part. He was just the executive producer for the others.

wan is actually a pretty cracking director. manages to put his own creative spin from his history in horror on bigger productions.
I would enjoy James Wan as a director, he really did put a spin on his horror films, which i enjoy. Though, how about we get a BattleTech film instead?
Furious 7 was awful. You only go see FnF movies for the cars and dumb action scenes, but 7 really went over the line with its awful writing. Despite that it got a decent rating because of Paul Walker. This is really terrible to say as I feel for Paul Walker but them turning it into a tribute for him just made it worse. It was trying to be too serious which does not fit the franchise. That being said, you never know he could direct these movies really well.

I have no problems with Robotech or its fans. It's Harmony Gold's legal bullying that I take issue with. I have very mixed feelings about a Robotech movie. If it were done, it would more than likely just be the Macross saga. In itself, that's not a terrible thing because the Macross saga follows SDF Macross pretty closely. There's a few details that are different, but the overall story and characters are still there. A Robotech movie made by somebody who understood Macross and genuinely wanted to do it could be great. There's a lot of ways to subtly twist the Robotech canon into making it more Macross-like, and at the same time address faults of the original SDF Macross. You could create a standalone "Robotech Cinematic Universe" if you wanted to. To say nothing of how much I would love to see a VF-1 and the Macross itself done with today's special effects. Coincidentally I actually just rewatched SDF Macross to see if it held up, and it really does. Despite being over 30 years old, Macross' themes and story have aged very, very well. In fact, with current events and social stances its arguably even more relevant today than it was back then. On the surface, the possibility of that happening and being good sounds great, but it creates a whole new world of headaches. If a Robotech movie were good, then that now means Harmony Gold has an incredible amount of leverage that it didn't have. For now, Harmony Gold just sits of Macross and prevents anything Macross from being imported into the country on an official level. It's why none of the Macross games have ever been released states-side, and why none of the new Macross series like Zero or Frontier ever saw an official translation/localization. If a Robotech movie was a hit, then Harmony Gold would have a much stronger incentive to continue to be such arrogant assholes about the Macross license. I honestly don't know how Harmony Gold is still in business or even how they make any money. I guess it's because they don't spend money on anything except for filing lawsuits whenever anybody tries to do anything with the Unseen Mechs from Battletech/Mechwarrior (that's a story for another day) or preventing somebody from doing anything with Macross. By the way if you haven't seen SDF Macross, I still highly recommend it despite its age. After a recent rewatch because I was curious if my love for it was only nostalgia, it turned out that it not only deserves its status as a classic of the genre, but was also far better than I remember it being when I watched it as a kid.
