Politicians in Germany have asked the Constitutional Court to outlaw the far-right National Democratic Party, often accused of promoting neo-Nazi ideology.
The upper house of parliament voted to file the request, though Chancellor Angela Merkel has not yet given her support to the application.
She said a similar attempt had collapsed in 2003 and a new setback might only strengthen the party.
The NPD wants to restore borders to what they were before World War II.
Germany's domestic intelligence agency says the party takes a favourable view of historical Nazism.
It obtained 1.5% of the vote in the 2009 general election and is not represented in the federal parliament.
Under German law either the government or any of the two houses of parliament can apply to the Constitutional Court to get a political party banned.
Kinda ironic, but not really
Merkel, you are just making it worse by bringing attention to their party. Just leave it be.
Hardly the right way to go on about doing this, regardless if it is a extreme right or left wing party.
"Germany's domnestic intelligence agency says the party takes a favourable view of historical Nazism"
Uhh.....

They should ban "Die Linke" as well
Fucking hypocrites

Ever since the Weimar-Republic got soft on Hitler and co, Germany has been extremely active in protecting its democracy, even if that means taking away the right to be against it.
Yeah how about we leave the foundations of democracy intact please Germany.

I never knew that was a feature in any country. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.
No love for any Nazis but just going to say you can't change the way someone thinks by telling them they can't think like that.
Those idiots will never get the majority of voters anyways...
No love for any Nazis but just going to say you can't change the way someone thinks by telling them they can't think like that.
That's not what this is about. Even if they succeed in banning their party, they can still think about anything however they want to. But can you understand how important it is to avoid that things go wrong just like they did 80 years ago?
No love for any Nazis but just going to say you can't change the way someone thinks by telling them they can't think like that.
But you can change whether they can put the way they think into action.
They should ban "Die Linke" as well
Fucking hypocrites
Hey "Die Linke" is exactly like the "SPD" was 2 decades ago. They are impoertant :v:
I'm sure the ability to ban a party is not something the German parliament uses very often. Seems more like they're doing this on the grounds of Germany's colorful history. Having another Nazi party rise up in Germany is just bad for everyone on a huge level, regardless if they actually get any power or not.
I'm curious if it actually is gaining any kind of momentum or if they're just doing it for because.
banning the party seems like it might be harmful.
you can't just ban an ideology, and by getting rid of a political party you often further entrench supporters of the ideology.

A declawed cat can't scratch you no matter how angry it gets.
I think the real question here is Germany should be pragmatic or if they want to stay true to the values of democracy.
My concern is that removing legitimate means for them to express their bullshit beliefs might create another Breivik. That would certainly make a scratch

As long as the old guard remains in government, stuff like this won't end. Too much fear mongering left over from WWII and the Cold War.

Declawing cats is wrong.

My concern is that its plain hypocritical, you can't have a democracy if you can outright ban parties for any reason.
My concern is that its plain hypocritical, you can't have a democracy if you can outright ban parties for any reason.
I think removing threats to democracy through democracy is alright if the reasons are plainly beneficial, as in this case.
Though I hope it's a lot more complex to ban a party just by having a vote in their parliament.

The ability that allows our government to do this is most definitely based around the idea of banning any current and future Nazi parties before they make any significant hold in the government. Yes, it is extreme.
Countries do extreme things to safeguard their values.
I am surprised this isn't banned already. Germany is really touchy about its past.

I don't think that's gonna happen. I'm sure the members of the party are aware of that they can't afford any more bad views on them. Nazis aren't thaaaat stupid actually...
Though I hope it's a lot more complex to ban a party just by having a vote in their parliament.
Look at how long it took our politicians to finally decide that banning a right-winged party might be a good idea. The German Basic Law doesn't actually allow the banning of any party...political freedom and stuff. So yeah, it actually IS a lot more complex to ban a party...if it's really necessairy of course.

The party as a whole may not, but Breivik was one man acting alone. Someone may, for lack of a better phrase, "go rogue" and pull a stunt that'll damage their image even if the man was acting independently.

That's good to hear. I take it you're German?

Yeah, that of course is a possibilty...

I am.
Freedom of speech and thought being Freedom of speech and thought, But I don't see anything wrong with this.
