At least 22 people, including a prominent MP, have been killed in a suicide bombing at a funeral in north-eastern Afghanistan, officials say.
Fifty people were also hurt when a man detonated his explosive vest as prayers were about to be said at the funeral in Taloqan, a city in Takhar province.
Local MP Mutalib Beg, a former commander in the Western-backed Northern Alliance, died at the scene.
Takhar has seen a series of high-profile attacks over the last year.
In May, the police commander for northern Afghanistan was assassinated in a suicide bomb attack on the provincial governor's compound.
'Target'Intelligence and security officials told the BBC that Sunday's suicide attack took place at about 12:00 (07:30 GMT), as people gathered for the funeral of a government official in Taloqan.
The interior ministry said most of the casualties were civilians.

There are reports that other senior officials were also at the funeral.
The governor of Takhar, Abdul Jabar Taqwa, said that like Mutalib Beg he had been invited to the funeral, but decided not to attend.
"The target was either me or the MP," he told the AFP news agency.
An ethnic Uzbek, Mr Beg represented the province in the lower house of parliament, the House of the People.
He was a former commander of the Jamiat-e-Islami party, part of the Northern Alliance - the faction that fought against the Taliban.
He also once served as police chief in the neighbouring province of Kunduz.
No group has said it carried out the attack, but the BBC's Bilal Sarwary in Kabul says an al-Qaeda affiliated group called the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) operates in north-eastern Afghanistan.[/release]

This is funny?
So...
What the fuck is the purpose of suicide bombing a funeral?
If they're so fucking eager to kill themselves, why not just use a razor blade or something?
Or go blow up a cougar or bear or something, if you really think killing yourself without cause will make you go to hell, but killing yourself and a bunch of innocents gets you chicks.
I thought this was in a country like Canada, or USA, or some where in the UK.
You should've made that clear in the title where it was
22 funerals and a funeral. Jesus, the state that Afghanistan is in.
Oh my god what's with the

Same reason kamikaze attacks were used in WW2. You take down potentially dozens of others with you, they make it sound like it's the honorable thing to do, also apparently yes they are told they'll get "chicks" in the afterlife if they blow themselves up (memory serving a martyrdom includes I think it was 17 virgins). They're not eager to kill themselves, they're eager to become heroes to their cause by killing their opposition, and are willing to kill themselves if that's what it takes. Remember they think they're committing "an act of God" and will be eternally rewarded.

you kind of seem to imply that a suicide attack is dismissive based on the fact that it happened in afghanistan

"lol i was worried and all it was was a bunch of fuckin towelheads wtf"
So they had no respect for themselves, no respect for the living and now no respect for the dead either.
Seriously fuck these guys.
That's incredibly sad (and fuck the person who did it), but the irony is just amazing.
overkill

Why does it make a difference if it was the US or it was Afghanistan, it's the same shit.
I guess it became a huge funeral :v:
No but seriously, hearts for the victims and their families [img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/img]
Back to the drawing board...
The Afghani who aren't dicks should just fucking immigrate so they don't have to die for bullshit reasons the bomber claimed to be a good idea.

They had respect for the dead? They stuck explosives into dead children and when soldiers found the corpse, they blew it up.
The iraqis who aren't dicks should just fucking immigrate so they don't have to die for bullshit reasons the bomber claimed to be a good idea.
[editline]27th December 2011[/editline]
also leaving your homeland isn't an emotionally easy thing to do, and leaving Afghanistan isn't a politically or economically easy thing to do either
Seems like
Someone died at the funereal :smug:

The country will just fall back to shit when the U.S leaves.

Mixed them, my bad. Fixed.
[editline]26th December 2011[/editline]
For some it might not be emotionally easy to leave their homeland, but for me for instance, all I will leave behind is a huge ass fart to compensate the steaming pile of shit Germany is giving me.
And if I were the family of these people who this was done to, I'd be gone forever before anyone knows about it.

And people say religion isn't a problem...
Is this irony?
Still tragic.
And people say religion isn't a problem...
That's a very broad generalization. Although not religious myself, I find it irritating when people attack religion because of attacks like these that CLAIM to be faith based, when in fact they are clearly not, they are just the work of extremists. Extremists of all groups give the rest of said group a bad name, it's not fair to generalize. It's kind of like saying all blacks are criminals because you see a black criminal on the news. To demean a whole group full of generally sane people, just because of the extremists? Unfair.
"lol i was worried and all it was was a bunch of fuckin towelheads wtf"
Uh, no.
I think it's horrible anywhere, but location in the title should be pretty important.
Seems pretty stupid, because who would remember it if there was nowhere for his name to be engraved in plain sight.
I feel sorry for the suicide bomber the most because its in no way natural to want to blow yourself up. He was likely brainwashed and indoctrinated or just fed up with how life was treating him.
And people say religion isn't a problem...
Not religion, just extremism. Too much of anything is usually a bad thing and religion is no exception.
Is nothing fucking sacred with these crazy people? What makes them want to do a suicide bombing at a damn funeral?!
Only think that would make it worse if it was a funeral of a victim of a suicide victim
I thought they believed in some sick and twisted form of honor, guess I was wrong.

No, this is their sick and twisted form of honor (assuming you're talking about the bombers that is, most muslims are decent people).
