Harper Lee, whose 1961 novel To Kill a Mockingbird became a national institution and the defining text on the racial troubles of the American deep south, has died at the age of 89.
RIP
Twas a good book. One of the novels I actually enjoyed reading as a school assignment.
Loved the book and the film. Remember hating having to read it in school at first, but the topics, the ideas, and the characters that sprung up were so enticing and good that I refused to put it down.
I think I read To Kill a Mockingbird twice in school, still a good book. Saw a really fantastic stage performance of it at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival many years ago. At least she got to release one more book though. Haven't read Go Set a Watchman yet though.

It's not very good from what I read about it, and was moree a cashgrab, not from her but from her caretaker. It's bascially a first draft of what became To Kill a Mockingbird
I really liked the Hunger Game series, what a shame.
I'm not exactly surprised since she held off so long on publishing that other book I thought when she announced she would publish it that she must have known she didn't have much longer.
I really enjoyed reading the book and watching the film.
It's sad to see such people go.

The publishing of Go Set a Watchman is a joke. She was in fading health and was basically forced to put the book out by caretakers for money. It's literally a first draft of To Kill and isn't worth it at all.

She never wanted to actually publish another book, and it's not really another book it's kiterally the first draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, some sections are the same word for word between the both of them.
It was published by her new Caretaker, after Lee's sister passed away (her previous caretaker) and her new caretaker had known about the manuscript.

Read up on the controversy.

It's a good book to read but not to write about. I always felt it was shoehorned into the syllabus to try to teach children that racism is BAD instead of because of its merits, but maybe that's just me...
Also the section on reception, it recieved a lot of negative reviews a precisely becuase it is a first draft of Mockingbird.
The publishing was a shitshow, and her Lawyer+Caretaker only saw $$$$

It shows however, how strong of a novel that Mockingbird is. With the right guidance and editing Lee was able to craft a masterpiece of American Literature. And for that she should be remembered.
I just read the book this week for the first time. Easily one of the best I've ever read.
